American Thoracic Society defines dyspnea

as an individual’s sensation of breathing

discomfort arising from various physiological,

psychological, social, and environmental

circumstances

Physiology of breathing

• Defined as the movement of oxygen from the outside

environment to the cells within tissues, and the transport of

carbon dioxide in the opposite direction

• Most important internal impulse : pCO², pH - blood

• Less important: pO² in arterial blood
