GOOD NEWS REFLECTION: THE LAW OF LOVE

The Jewish religious authorities of Jesus' day were often literalists in their interpretation of the Law of God. Jesus, however, gave a deeper meaning to the Law. He placed his focus on the goal of the Law: Love. In this Sunday's Gospel reading, Jesus explains that we fail to fulfill the Law when our so-called obedience isn't motivated by love. Jesus completely fulfilled the true meaning of the Law. In doing so, he took upon himself our disobedience and died for us in the most generous gift of love. As his followers, we also are to be generous with love. Obeying all the commandments -- truly obeying them -- requires loving God with our whole heart, all the time, and loving others as ourselves. Jesus explains how to transform literal interpretations of God's laws into the Law of Love. In each example, he shows that we are to choose the most loving approach to every problem, no matter how difficult. His first topic is anger: Sinful anger is judgmental, and we are judged by this sin. Jesus provides the remedy: Go and do whatever is necessary to be reconciled. This, he points out, is even more important than worshiping God. How genuine can our worship be if anger has replaced love in our hearts, since God is love? Another example is lust, which is a counterfeit of love because it treats others as objects. And divorce from a valid marriage is a failure to love as Christ loves, who taught that love makes sacrifices and endures hardships. Remarriage, he says, furthers the sin because it's unloving to the spouse of the original union. Jesus extends this teaching to every area of life. Breaking an oath is unloving. Lying and never intending to keep the commitment is unloving. In fact, the entire Sermon on the Mount, of which this Gospel reading is a part, explains how to love. Were you ever treated unlovingly because of another person's legalism? How did that experience hide the true nature of Jesus? What habits or addictions do you have that are unloving toward yourself? How do they affect others? Recall a time when someone treated you unfairly, but you responded with an act of love. How difficult was it to give that love? What were the results? Name common ways that Christians fail to obey God. What did Jesus do to make up for those failures? For example, how do you suppose Jesus treats unborn babies who've been aborted or miscarried? © 2020 Terry Modica, Catholic Digital Resources, www.catholicdr.com. Printed by permission.

© 2019 Terry Modica, Catholic Digital Resources, www.catholicdr.com. This year Lent begins on February 26th, which is Ash Wednesday. From Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday we count 46 days, but since Sunday is our weekly renewal of Easter the Sundays of Lent are not counted as days of Lent. Leaving out the Sundays of Lent gives us the forty days we observe as special days of prayer, good works and self-denial. When we think of practices for Lent all of us think of Mass. Mass is our fullest expression of prayer as the Church. It is the source of life for our living the Gospel in our world. At St. Peter and St. Mary Church we celebrate six Sunday Masses and two Masses each weekday. A small change in one’s schedule or routine may make it possible to come to Mass sometime during the week. Every Tuesday from after the 9AM morning Mass until Night Prayer and Benediction at 7:45PM our Lord waits for us in our church in the weekly Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. It offers us a great opportunity to spend this special time with our Savior in a setting of peace and recollection. The Sacrament of Penance will be available for additional time on Saturdays during Lent, beginning at 3PM until 4:45PM; we plan to have the Sacrament of Penance between and during Masses on Sunday, March 27th; in Holy Week on Monday, April 6th and Wednesday April 8h there will be more opportunities for the celebration of this sacrament. Also, individual appointments for Penance may be made with Fr. Hernandez or Fr. Madden. In addition, during Lent we will have Stations of the Cross: in English on Friday’s at 7:00PM; in Spanish on Thursdays after the 7:30PM Mass.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

The Religious Education Program office is open from 10:00AM to 2:30PM Monday through Thursday and at night from 5:45PM to 8:30PM, Monday through Wednesday. Please call before you come to our office. All payments are made in the rectory office. Registration is closed for this year. Registration for 2020-2021 will open in March. There was a Confirmation meeting for parents in October and a First Communion meeting for parents in November. These were both important meetings. If you did not attend either one, you will need to call to make an appointment with Mrs. Cobb. There is an important packet that is dated and was handed out at both meetings. Packets will not be handed out to students. The next parent meeting will be in April for Confirmation, and for First Communion the meeting will be in March. All Confirmation students should have handed in the Saint reports that are now past due. Please continue praying for our students.
