The minister was accompanied by the MEC for Education in the province, Dickson Masemola. MEC Masemola informed the minister about the steps taken to prevent a repeat of the 2012 textbook distribution fiasco in the province. The warehouse the minister inspected was a beehive of activity according to reports in the national news and some of the books was in the process of leaving the warehouse on loaded trucks en route to schools in the province. In the Burgersfort, Steelpoort and Ohrigstad areas the fiasco with textbooks cut deeply with one school openly declaring this week that they still have not received the 2012 books and had to make a plan for 2013 by maybe “buy the books ourselves, otherwise the children will suffer”. The thievesamongst us

A number of attendees at Thorburn Security’s fraud seminar, whichwas held yesterday at the Tubatse Chrome Club, realised they werepossibly going about their business with eyes wide shut as whitecollar thieves can milk them dry if they do not know what to look for.

This information was given by an advocate, white collar crimeprosecutor and forensic specialist, Mr Steven Powell (photograph, top).

Mr Powell kept his audience spellbound with his information aboutreal white collar criminals, what to look for when you do not evensuspect someone is ripping you off and how to catch them. Theextent of white collar crime as related by the speaker certainlyopened a few eyes, as well as the way they are always caught andthe prison terms they serve, even if they manage to give back whatthey had stolen.

The Thorburn seminar was specifically tailored for the miningindustry and also included topics such as scams, tenderpreneurs, bribery, nepotism and corruption.

TRP regards safety seriously. It is alsopassionate about the wellbeing of itshuman capital. It is one of the critical pil-lars behind its success. They have dedi-cated wellness programmes coordinatedby a passionate team of professionals. This programme permeates through allits stakeholder groupings. In addition toits employee (internal programme) theyalso conduct monthly outreach

programmes focussing on its core commu-nities in partnership with various stakehold-ers. During its recent outreach programmein Kalkfontein, TRP was able to reach over320 people and conducted over 200 VCTtests as well as other diagnostics through itshealth partners, Platinum Heath and Discov-ery.”Kgoshi Lengwai Masha of Kalkfontein alsosupported the initiative.

TRP and bikers bringhope to Wenakker

Residents of Wenakker, a home for 250 men and womenwith special needs, situated north of Lydenburg, wererecently greeted by a convoy of bikers carrying special giftsworth over thousands of rand for them. As the bikesroared into the facility the place sprang to life. Theresidents woke up to roaring sounds of the HarleyDavidson bikes. With government support for suchfacilities dwindling year-on-year due to the increasingdemands for basic societal needs, Two Rivers PlatinumMine’s intervention was more than welcomed.Residents at the facility require 24 hour care. Althoughthey receive grants from the government the cost ofrunning such facilities as well as their individual needsmakes it difficult for the institution to provide certain basicneeds. Two Rivers Platinum and after receiving a writtenrequest for donation of toiletries for the institution fromsome of its employees, have decided to organize a tourof the facilities and to deliver some of the parcels to theresidents directly. They were recently joined by 87 bikers from aroundLydenburg on this charity drive. This was aimed at raisingadditional funds for the facility as well as spending qualitytime with the residents. The initiative is part of Two River’ssocial responsibility programme and it is driven by itsemployees. This will now become an annual event and itis hoped that through this initiative the facility willbecome part of the broader society as the residents getto meet and socialize with the community. The place havebecome the only home to most of the residents and sincethey came to the facility, the have never seen their familiesagain.

As we approach the Festive Season and the end of the year we also ought to look back and take stock. At TRP wecertainly had moments of sadness, but also moments of pride which gives us hope for the future. We sadly lostone of our employees at the beginning of the year through accidents. We regret this and our sincere condolencesto his family. However, we showed a year on year improvement regarding injuries on the mine. This is what wewould like to take with into 2013.On the bright side we achieved 600 000 fatality free shifts and we would like to encourage all employees to keepup their safety vigilance. Safety is for everyone and going home safely at the end of the day should always be theaim. In another big event of the year, we took over GLTA very successfully through a Section 197 (LRA). Through this, wewere able to save hundreds of jobs occupied by people from the communities around the operation and therebyensuring a happier Christmas time for most of the households. To our matric learners who are about to sit for their final examinations in the various centres, TRP staff andmanagement would like to wish you the best of luck. We know you will make your parents proud.

With the Festive Season fast approaching, we also remember what this time

of the year is really about, the celebration of the birth of our Lord Saviour,

Jesus Christ. May you all experience His Love and have a SAFE and special

time with your families and loved ones. All the best for 2013.

Mr Sipho Aphane said: “If I can get involved Iwill. Many negative things in our area arerelated to the municipality. We need to getinvolved to get the municipality to fix things -the potholes, the eating saloons and thehawkers everywhere. It is unhygienic withthe hair blowing from the hawkers cuttinghair into the eating saloons just there on thestreet”.

Mr Aubrey Molatudi said: “I have a vegetablegarden at Ntabane Secondary School inRietfontein. I usually give the less privilagedat Ohrigstad some cabbages and spinach. There are four women from the communityhelping in the garden. This is how we make adifference”. He is from Rietfontein.

Mr Khoza Magile and Mr Joshua Mokgothu are from Penge. They said: “We want to help ourcommunity over the December holidays by collecting the children and taking them to thecommunity hall. There we will play games with them. We want to keep them busy, safe and offthe streets”.

One of the things people in general are verygood at is complaining. We tend to see thingsin our communities that are not right and wecomplain (although not always somewherewhere the complaint will be attended to).Residents from the Greater Tubatse Municipalarea are no different. We complain about thelack of service delivery, the condition of theroads, the lack of town planning and generallawlessness (of which many are guiltythemselves). We asked readers if they are involved in theircommunities to help make a difference andchange things for the better. With the festiveseason approaching everyone wantsbusinesses to give to good causes, but are weas individuals also prepared to give? How willwe give? There are many ways to make adifference - with money, time, skills or by beingcreative. Many of the more affluent people in our areadeclined to comment while one Zimbabweanman spoke to Platinum Gazette on conditionof anonimity. He said: “They will kill me if I givemy name and show my face, but here peoplejust want things. They demand to have things, but they are not prepared to give, work or putin effort. Look at that dustbin there. Peoplethrow the papers all around it. They won’t putit in the dustbin. That is the way they do it here.”
