After violent storms battered parts of the area during thepast few weeks, causing much damage, softer rain started tofall on Wednesday morning, continuing through the day,giving much needed nourishment to plants and animals.Traffic wise, the chaotic free-for-all in Burgersfort andSteelpoort prevailed, but only much worse because of thewet conditions. Remarkably, all motorists are so used to thischaos, that the rain did not cause serious accidents tohappen. Even more remarkable, the electricity and watersupply held. Cellphone signals went bust late in theafternoon, although it is not sure whether the rain causedit.

Welcome relief...

Production is back on track at PlatinumAustralia’s Smokey Hills Platinum Minenear Burgersfort since the beginning ofthe month.

Production had been temporarilyhalted because Platinum Australia’ssubsidiary, Phoka Thaba Platinum hasterminated the contract on 11 Octoberwith underground mining contractorRedpath Mining, who needed time tovacate the mine.

The relationship between Redpath andPlatinum Australia deteriorated after thecompanies could not agree on paymentsand production schedules at Smokey Hills.

Platinum Australia recently statedthat Phoka Thaba disputed a number ofinvoices which Redpath had submitted,totalling R50-million, and that it hadwithheld a further R50-million claimed byRedpath following the termination tocover the costs it had claimed.PhokaThaba said Redpath’s performanceover the last 12 months was consistentlybelow expectations. The company alsonoted it had become increasinglyconcerned with the safety performance ofRedpath over the last year, includingseven safety breach notices from theDepartment of Minerals and Resources.

A new contract has been entered into,according to an announcement byPlatinum Australia, with JIC Mining

Services. As far as could be determinedproduction was resumed after the majorityof the Redpath workforce was transferredto JIC.

JIC currently has underground miningcontracts with Impala Platinum, EasternPlatinum (Crocodile River), Mototolo(Xstrata/Anglo Platinum Joint Venture),BRPM (Royal Bafokeng PlatinumHoldings), Hernic Ferrochrome,International Ferro Metals and ShivaUranium.

The company employs over 7,500people in these various operations

Meanwhile Mining Weekly hasreported that Redpath Mining andPlatinum Australia have entered into anarbitration process in a bid to resolve thedispute. The process is reportedly underway with a resolution expected by July2011.

Redpath’s view is that there was nocredible basis to terminate the contract,other than finding ways to delay thepayment of the financial obligation, inexcess of R100-million, to Redpath.

Platinum Australia managing director,John Lewins confirmed that thecompanies would go the arbitration route.“Yes, there is an agreement to go to anarbitration process, which is what wewanted to do for some time. We are happyto go through that process,” he said.

Platinum company Anooraq Resourceswants to double production at its Bokonimine between Burgersfort and Polokwaneover the next two years.

CEO, Philip Kotze told journalistsrecently during a media visit to the minethat Anooraq was planning to increaseproduction to 160 000 t/m by 2013, whichwould translate into 240 000 oz/y.

This first phase of planned productionincreases comes with a price tag of aroundR600-million, of which Anooraq would beresponsible for 51%, while Anglo Platinumwill pay the rest.

Kotze said that the company would aimto fund its portion with profits generatedfrom its current operations. Alternatively,Anooraq also has a R750-million facilitythat it could draw funds from.

Over the past year the company hasimplemented a turnaround at Bokoni,previously known as Lebowa, when it wasowned by Anglo Platinum.

Kotze reported that Anooraq has gonefrom recording an R80-million loss a yearago, to showing a R20-million profit.

It also boasted record productionfigures in September.

The labour restructuring, whichaffected more than 800 people, sawproductivity and efficiency improve by32%.The tons milled on the mineincreased by 29%, while operating costswere reduced by 19%.

Anooraq had already reduced costs atthe mine - which has historically beenknown as the eastern limb’s highest-costproducer - from R1 115/t to about R900/t.

Kotze said that the company would aimto further reduce costs to R800/t.

The platinum orebody that Anooraqwas sitting on, is the third biggest in theworld with a 26-km strike length andabove industry average grades of around4,2 g/t.

Anooraq is positioning this $1,5-billionasset for future growth. From 2016onwards, it planned to increase productionto about 400 000 t/m at the expectedgrades of 4,4 g/t, this would deliver 570000 oz/y, which would push Anooraq in theleague of major platinum miners.

Speedsters to lose their licenceA new amendment to the National RoadTraffic Act could result in speeding motoristslosing their drivers licences.The Act kicks in on Saturday (tomorrow) andmotorists who are caught exceeding thespeed limit by 30km in an urban area andwith 40km on a highway (non urban area)may have their licences suspended.If a driverwas caught and the court finds him or herguilty, their licence will automatically besuspended. This will even apply to thosepaying an admission of guilt fine. The courtwill decided for how long the licence will besuspended and if it should be suspended.There are however fears that the newlegislation will encourage drivers to rathercontest the fines in court than paying theirfines in an attempt to avoid having theirlicences revoked. Another amendment is thatlicences will only be valid for the code it wasissued. If you pass a Code 10 licence thatallows for driving a truck or heavy vehicle,you will not be legally allowed to drive a car.This will be effected from 1 December 2010.We asked readers what they think about theamendment.

The grade 4 learners wereasked to do a show and tell presentationabout their culture. The response wasfabulous. Each learner prepared a speechand made a poster. Die graad 5 leerders het die kwartaal in groepe dieretuinegemaak. Daar was kreature van elke grote, vorm en spesiewat ‘n spesiale ‘huis’ voor gebou is. Dankie vir julentoesiasme en harde werk. Julle is tops!

This term the grade 5 learners worked in groups to makezoos. There were creatures of all shapes and sizes thateach was built a special “home”. Thanks for all yourenthusiasm and hard work. You guys are the best!

Graad 6Veldskool 2010

Wel…ons het baie goed gedoen en dit was ‘n belewenisen ‘n half. Ons het vroeg Maandag oggend van die skoolaf vertrek en Donderdag oggend terug gekeer. Dit was‘n baie groot geleentheid om nuwe maats te maak, teleer en meeste van als prêt te hê! Die lekkerste wasdie vlotbou en resies hou. Ons span was die “Rooi BlesJas Katte” en ja…ons het gewen. Daar was snaakse namebv. “Koedoe Spring Perde” en “ Oliekrokenosters”. Diename moes bestaan uit verskeie woorde en daar moes‘n vlag gemaak word wat ten alle tye saam met die groepmoes wees. By die boeresport het die meisies die seunsgewen met toutrek…julle moes die seuns se gesigte enverskonings gehoor het! Die leteria bane was lekkermaar tog so moeilik op party plekke. Ons het een aandkonsert gehou en onsself siek gelag. Op ‘n ander aandhet ons Lantern bekruip waar die seuns die meisiesbietjie moes beskerm weens vreemde vrese vir die dingein die nag. Ek dink dit was ‘n geval van “all in the mind”.Die veldskool was regtig vir my baie lekker. Ek wil netdankie sê aan Juffrou Sanet Oosthuizen vir die lekkerkos wat sy die hele kamp vir ons gemaak het en MeneerAnton Erasmus. Beide die onderwysers het dit moontlikgemaak vir ons om te gaan. En dan aan Meneer AntonAlberts vir sy bystand en die heerlike kos wat hygebring het. Dankie Meneer! Tigershoek is ‘n wonderlikeplek vol vriende en geluk!Deur Anzeri Ferreira


Vir baie van die leerders wat op diejaarlikse toer gaan is dit die eerste maalwat hul die groot blou see sien of deur‘n groot stad ry. Op 10 Oktober 2010is almal vroeg uit die vere om die padaan te pak. Tannie Mem was agter diestuur en het seker gemaak ons kom almalveilig daar aan. Na ‘n 12 ure rit was almalblitsvinnig in hul swemklere om opUmkomaas se strand in die see te gaanbaljaar. Die volgende dag is ons op ‘nbootrit in die hawe wat vir almal baieprêt was. Daarna is ons na die DurbanNatuurwetenskap museum waar onsmeer geleer het oor diere en hul habitat.Mnr. Louis en Juf. Bianca het ons toena Gateway Mall gevat vir ‘n 3-D fliek.Dinsdag is ons na die Natalse Haaieraadwaar hul ‘n haai vir ons oopgesny het.Crocodile Creek Krokedilplaas wasvolgende op die lys waar ons meer geleerhet oor die fassinerende diere en hulmaniere. Na ‘n vinnige potjie TenpinBowling was ons op pad na die Tegnologiesentrum. Om die dag af te sluit het onsdie fliek “Karate kid” gaan kyk.Woensdag is ons na Ushaka MarineWorld. Na die lesing het ons die dolfynvertoning gaan kyk en deur die aqarium

Graad 7 Seeskoolgestap. Die res van die dag was dit tydvir “Wet and Wild” waarna ons op diestoep gesokkie het tot slapenstyd. Onsplanne om te gaan swem by Scottburg’eis in die wiele gery met slegte weer sotoe gaan doen ons bietjie inkopies bydie Gateway Mall. Die seuns het toe dieaand gebraai terwyl ons begin pak het.Ons het vroeg die volgende dag vertrekna Shaka-zulu land. Op pad daarheen hetons die aerial broadwalk van 10 m bo diegrond gedoen en ‘n toring geklim van 20m bo die grond by Eshowe woud.Ons het by Shakaland ‘n oorsig oorShaka se lewe gekry en oorlogformasiesis aan ons verduidelik. Ons het diehoofman besoek en asemrowendekulturele danse beleef. Bier is ook virons aangebied om te proe.Op Saterdag 16 Oktober het ons dieeinde van die program voltooi metstokgevegte, vervaardiging van spiese,spiesgooi en ‘n besoek aan die sangoma(medisyneman). Ons durf toe die langpad huistoe aan.Baie dankie aan al die onderwysers, Mnr.Louis, Juf. Bianca en Juf. Christelle,asook Tannie Mem en Oom Wynand virdie onvergeetlike ervaring!

Boomplantdag Ons onnies in kleur geskets

Mnr. Wimpy Burtles het by Steelpoort Akademie die leerders ‘nbietjie meer wys kom maak oor slange. Hy het verskeie slangeaan die leerders kom wys en vertel van elk se unieke eienskappe.Die Luislang was natuurlik die mees indrukwekendste van diereptiele wat verkeie leerders (en onderwyseresse) se bene laatbewe het. Baie dankie aan Mnr. Burtles en die Graad 3onderwyseresse vir die reëlings rondom die praatjie. Dit waswerklik ‘n belewenis.

Wat ‘n feestelike jaar was dit nie vir SteelpoortAkademie nie. Ons was op die kruin van die fees.Altesaam 175 leerders het deelgeneem. Dit is ‘nrekordgetal. Ons is baie trots op elke kind watdeelgeneem het. Talente is afgestof en opgedollie en tentoon gestel. SAUK en die ander kanale kan gerus by ons‘n draai kom maak met hulle ‘scouts’.Die leerders het deelgeneem in Engels en Afrikaans.Gedramatiseerde enongedramatiseerde items is geleweren ons het selfs leerders vir monoloëen kuns ingeskryf.Daar was baie hoogtepunte gewees in2010. Ons het ‘n mooi getal leerdersgehad wat A simbole, A+ simbole enA++ simbole verwerf het. Op Ohrigstad verkoop die Op-en-Wakker Groep vir bejaardes hou elke laaste Vrydag van diemaand pannekoek- en vetkoekverkope by die Pure Plaas stalletjie. Al die geld wat hulle in dieeerste deel van die jaar ingesamel het, het gegaan vir liefdadigheid. Nou werk die bejaardesom geld in te samel vir hul toer na die Kaap.

Steelpoort Akademie masssasport

Op 18 November hou Steelpoort Akademie massasport. Gedurende die oggend is diekinders aan die beurt, maar in die middag sal die ouers en onderwysers deelneem terwyl diekinders as beamptes optree. Almal is genooi om te kom deel in die pret!

Tubatse Ferrochrome played inter-departmental games on Saturday 13November. The games was played at theWinterveld Sportsground.Both soccer and netball was played. Theplayers suffered in more than 38°Ctemperatures.The departments on the photographs areFurnaces and non-operational.Teams from Tubatse regularly participatein games, not only internally, but alsoagainst teams from other plants.

GSKA Karate Burgersfort het verlede week Vrydag en Saterdag in Standertonhul gradering gehad. Die A en die B liga het verlede week Saterdag opTubatse Chrome se gholfbaan liga wedstryde gespeel.Chroom A het teen Nelspruit gespeel en 6-2 gewen.Crhoom B het teen Lydenburg gespeel en ook 6-2gewen.Hierdie week word daar ‘n Nag gholf kompetisiegehou. Dit vind vanaand reeds plaas. 9 Putjies word indaglig gespeel en 9 in die aand. Die tweede rondteword daar met verligte helderkleurige balle gespeel.Volgende week Saterdag is dit die Kruppel Buffelsgholfdag.
