Welcome to the September issue of the Ossett Review. A hugely

busy month for us as we prepare our the titles to our group of

local magazines. The team here would like to thank all the

advertisers who have supported us over the last three and a half

years, making the Ossett Review the success it is.

A big thanks also to our contributors who help to make the Ossett

Review a useful and interesting local magazine - particularly to

Lesley who always writes the ever popular ‘Life with Lottie’ page.

This month we’ve included an article from a young lady, Taylor

Kent, who spend some time with us in the summer - she had very

strong views on the lack of youth facilities in Ossett.

There’s lots going on in the area this month - Trinity Church are

busy with their Open Day on the 13th (the views from the top of

the tower are amazing!) and a really fun Duck Race on the Calder

on the 20th. Proceeds from these events are going towards their

Make It Hot fundraising. Ossett Town Hall is open for the Heritage

Open Days on the 13th, so if you’ve ever wanted to see the

Mayors Parlour or council chamber, go along for a guided tour. In

fact our Diary page is full this month - take a look on page 26.

And for those of you who have been wondering where

Sitlington is, we’ve included a quick explanation on page8.

In December 2007,J.K. Rowling unveiledThe Tales of Beedlethe Bard, a very

special book of five wizarding fairy tales. Sevenindividual copies were produced, eachhandwritten and illustrated on vellum, bound inbrown morocco leather and mounted withdifferent semi-precious stones. Six of the bookswere given by the author to those most closelyconnected to the Harry Potter books over thelast 17 years; the seventh was given to TheChildren’s High Level Group charity andauctioned by the charity at Sotheby’s in London.

J K Rowling says: “There was understandabledisappointment among Harry Potter fans whenonly one copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bardwas offered to the public last December. I amtherefore delighted to announce that, thanks tothe generous support of Bloomsbury, Scholasticand Amazon (who bought the handwritten copyat auction) – and with the blessing of thewonderful people who own the other six originalbooks - The Tales of Beedle the Bard will nowbe widely available to all Harry Potter fans.Royalties will be donated to the Children’s HighLevel Group, to benefit institutionalised childrenin desperate need of a voice. left to Hermione Granger by Albus Dumbledorein the seventh and final book, Harry Potter andthe Deathly Hallows. Only one – The Tale of theThree Brothers – is recounted in the book. InThe Tales of Beedle the Bard, the fourremaining stories are revealed for the very firsttime.

The Tales ofBeedle the Bard ispublished by TheChildren’s High

Level Group (CHLG), a registered charity co-founded in 2005 by J.K. Rowling and EmmaNicholson MEP to make life better forvulnerable children. JK Rowling has waived allroyalties and all net proceeds from the sale ofthe books – expected to be in the region of £4million / $8 million – will be donated to CHLG.

Where’sSitlington?

We recently received a call from a gentleman

in Wales saying that after reading the Ossett

Review during a visit to Ossett, he had

looked for Sitlington on his road atlas but

couldn’t find it - even his Tom Tom didn’t

know where it was! Could we explain?

Since advertising that the Ossett Review isdistributed in Sitlington, we have beeninundated with calls and emails asking whereSitlington is, including calls from people livingthere! So here’s a quick background to clearup any confusion.

Sitlington is the name of the parish councilcovering Netherton, Middlestown, Overton &Midgley and going up to the boundary ofKirklees in the West and down to the RiverCalder in the East. The parish council hasnothing to do with the church, it is purelyanother tier of local government and is able tolevy a local charge which is collected with theCommunity Charge and used specifically forlocal facilities and projects.

Until about the 19th century, Sitlington wascalled Shitlington and according to A.H.Smith’s The Place-Names of the West Ridingof Yorkshire, part II, meant ‘Scyt(t)elsfarmstead’.

It included Over Shitlington (now Overton),Middle Shitlington (now Middlestown) andNether Shitlington (now Netherton) - eachname gradually changing and the ‘h’disappearing altogether from Shitlingtonpresumably for reasons of delicacy!

On a similar note, fed up with constant jeersand jokes, the Ugley Women’s Institute inEssex changed itself to the Women’s Instituteof Ugley!

Food & DrinkThe recipes below are favourites with my daughter and have stood the test of time. The Creamy

Salmon Pasta is great for anyone following the Weight Watchers or Slimming World diets as the

sauce is made with low fat Phili - the Cookies however are a whole different ball game and

definitely not recommended if you are counting the calories!

Chocolate Fleck CookiesSo easy, so moreish and so very naughtyINGREDIENTS125g butter2 tblsp castor sugar½ cup sweetened condensed milk1½ cups self-raising flour75g dark chocolate, gratedMETHODCream the butter and sugar in a bowl with an electric mixer untillight and fluffy and then beat in the condensed milk. Fold in thesifted flour in 2 lots and stir in the chocolate.Take about a teaspoonful of the mixture and roll into a ball,place on a lightly greased baking tray and press down lightlywith a fork to flatten . Repeat with remaining mixture,Bake in a moderate oven (180C / 350F / Gas Mark 4) for about10 minutes. Leave on the tray for a couple of minutes toharden and cool on a cooling rack.The biscuits will keep for up to 2 weeks in an airtight containerand can be frozen for up to 2 months.

Creamy Salmon PastaA delicious quick, low fat & healthy mealINGREDIENTSSpaghetti or your preferred pasta shapesSalmon fillets - 1 fillet per personFrozen peasLow fat Philidelphia cheese (or any low fat cream cheese)Skimmed or semi-skimmed milkOregano

METHODStart the pasta cooking in plenty of salted boiling water. Boilaccording to packet instructions - usually about 15 mins. Ifcooked before the salmon sauce, leave in the water to keepwarm. Don’t drain until you are ready to serve or the pasta willclog together.Poach the salmon fillets in a little water, milk or diet lemonadeuntil cooked through, usually about 10-15mins. Keep warm.Meanwhile make the sauce by mixing the cream cheese with alittle milk in a small saucepan and add the frozen peas. Half astandard tub of cream cheese serves two, a full tub for four.Use just enough milk to give the consistency of pouring creamand adjust after adding the peas as this can water down thesauce a little. Flavour with dried oregano.Drain the pasta and put onto serving plates. Place a salmonfillet on top of the pasta and pour over the sauce. Alternatively, flake the salmon fillets and mix in with the sauce before serving- this is good if you want the salmon to go further and want toadd more vegetables.

“How on earth do you make the ducksrace, poor things?”, was just onecomment I heard about the TrinityChurch Duck Race. But I’ve beenassured by Julie at Trinity Church thatnone of the plastic ducks used for therace will be harmed or distressed! Andthe race will raise much needed fundsfor the Church’s Make It Hot campaign,so buy a duck to enter the race andmake a date in your diary to go along - itpromises to be a great day out.

The Ducks ‘Swim’ at 2pm on a shortstretch of the Calder and HebbleNavigation at Horbury Bridge, starting atthe bridge by the Bingley Arms. Stallsand fun will be in the pub beer gardenfrom 1pm.

Ossett has many good leisure resources; GreenPark, Cricket Club, Manor Park, Skate Park.However, some of these Parks are ruined with“Graffiti” and “Vandalism”.

Ossett needs a Youth club! It could have funnights, fun activities and fun days out that wouldappeal to each personality. There could be specificnights which catered for specific ages: for example7-10. My vision is that it would be supervised with aGroup leader who would arrange all the activities,trips and outings. It would be a great opportunity tomeet new people and see new sights.

The trips could include; the seaside, themeparks, playing games, trips to the zoo, campingetc... Whatever the trip involved, it would givechildren and teenagers a chance to have an outingand meet and make new friends. All that would berequired would be a small fee that would pay forthe Outing and transportation.

On the nights that you go to the Youth Club youcould: play pool, watch TV, have organizedactivities and even just hang around with yourfriends. Alternatively, the younger children could bedoing activities such as: painting, baking, playingwith toys, paper mashie and making things etc…

The idea is that there is somewhere you can goto play or hang. Also, there could be a homeworkclub; an area which children can form a studygroup. If they can’t concentrate or need help withthe homework, then they can work as a team anddo it together.

The youth club wouldn’t have to just cater for theyounger end of the community. It would be a greatidea for other ages to get involved. There could bea senior session with a mixed age where everyonecould meet each other. The outing for the senior

session could involve going to the seaside or havea gathering on Sunday for a meal (something thatwould get the community together).

This is only an idea but I think that it would begreat for Ossett to have a youth centre. It wouldgive people something new to experience; andhopefully give something new to Ossett.

It would be a fantastic opportunity for Ossett tohave a Youth Club, and a fantastic opportunity forour community.

However, the “Youth Club” wouldn’t have to becatered for the younger end of the community. Itwould be a great idea for the other side of thecommunity to take part. There could be an elderlyyouth club where they could go and meet newfriends. The Outing could involve trips to seasideresorts even just on a Sunday meeting and havinga meal with your community. This is only an idea,although I think that it would be great for Ossett tohave a “Youth Centre. It would give peoplesomething new to experience; and hopefully givesomething new to Ossett.

On the nights that you go you would probablyplay pool, board games activities then just hangaround in you own space with your friends. As a family-run business, Lucy Arthad decided upon the theme of‘family & friends’ and in theupcoming weeks found themselvesinundated with creative and excitingentries from local children of all ages.

It was a hard decision to make butthe Lucy Art team managed to decideon the worthy winners; all received afantastic selection of art supplies andthe lucky 1st prize winners had theirpaintings printed on to canvas to takepride of place in their home!

Do you rememberthose TV showsthat were all about

“instant gardening”? I always thought it tookthe pleasure out of the planning, watching,marvelling and evolving of a garden. Thatslow side of gardening is what is the mostexciting. I love to see the changes markingthe passing of time. I always remember MontyDon writing that in order to feel alive heneeded the soil on his hands and in his nailsand he had to dig daily. I know exactly whathe means. I read about sporting fanaticsneeding their “fix” of exercise, and I realisethat I’m like that with soil and gardening.There’s no excuse to stay away from theallotment (Lottie), even when the weather isnot on your side. I call it “The Lure of theLottie.” The allotment has a kind of hypnoticpull. It’s like a horticultural version of a siren;although only good can come from it. I’vealways been interested in horticulture as

therapy and blow me down with a feather, it’sa real therapy! Look it up on the web, thereare many great sites to inform you of thegoodness of gardening. Being down on theplot is a real antidote to modern living. Life isso busy, hectic, full on, but gardening issomething you can’t speed up. The slowmovement is gaining followers and a return tolife in the slow lane is making a come back.Horrah! As I write it’s actually NationalAllotment week (yes there is one!). This fillsme with great warmth. The importance of theland, taking life at a healthy pace, thegrowing of your own food and knowing thesource are now seen as part of the lifebalance. Pick up your spade and join in therevolution! (slowly).

• Start a new compost heap…go on..you know youwant to. There’re plenty of ingredients at yourfingertips on the plot.

• The digging time begins so that you can improveyour soil. Clay soil needs a good digging beforethe rains make it unworkable.

• Plant garlic. For it to grow well it needs the coldweather.

Perfectly Logical!A Spanish teacher was explaining to her class

that in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are

designated as either masculine or feminine.

'House' for instance, is feminine: 'la Casa.'

'Pencil,' however, is masculine: 'el lapiz.'

A student asked, 'What gender is 'computer'?'

Instead of giving the answer, the teacher

split the class into two groups, male and

female, and asked them to decide for

themselves whether 'computer' should be a

masculine or a feminine noun.

Each group was asked to give four reasons

for its recommendation.

The men's group decided that 'computer'

should definitely be of the feminine gender

('la computadora'), because:

1. No one but their creator understands their

internal logic;

2. The native language they use to

communicate with other computers is

incomprehensible to everyone else;

3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in

long term memory for possible later

retrieval; and

4. As soon as you make a commitment to

one, you find yourself spending half your

salary on accessories for it.

The women's group, however, concluded

that computers should be Masculine ('el

computador'), because:

1. In order to do anything with them, you

have to turn them on;

2. They have a lot of data, but still can't

think for themselves;

3. They are supposed to help you solve

problems, but half the time they ARE the

problem; and

4. As soon as you commit to one, you

realize that if you had waited a little

longer, you could have got a better model.
