Welcome to the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium tonight for the game againstour old friends from west Yorkshire.Ossett Town are having a fine season, lying just below the play-off places, so

it was something of a surprise when their manager Shaun Elliott decided to movefrom Ingfield to Northern Counties East side Shaw Lane Aquaforce. The club moved quickly to appoint a successor on Friday by bringing in expe-

rienced manager JohnReed. John has enjoyed great success at the likes of Har-rogate Town, Stalybridge Celtic and Buxton, whilst also spending a short time inthe hot-seat at Goole, and more recently as assistant manager of Scarborough. He brings with him his trusty side-kick Clive Freeman as assistant manager, andthe appointment could prove to be an inspired one for our visitors.John and Clive begin their tenure here at the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium,

and whilst wishing them both well in their new positions, I must insist that thegoodwill begins after tonight! We, of course, continue to enjoy a rich vein of form, and the victory at Padiham

was very comfortable. We need to continue this run, as the play-off places, onceagain, look like going down to the last game of the season. We don’t want tosuffer the heartache of last April again!ANOTHER ONE GONE

I find it so frustrating that the non-league game does not attract the kind ofpublicity it deserves. The wonderful “Non-League Hour” vanished off the RadioLancashire airwaves last year after 19 years, and Radio Manchester’s non-leaguesegment of around half-an-hour depends upon there being a rugby game beingplayed on a Friday night, otherwise it’s cancelled. I’ve been enjoying, for the last couple of years or so, “Pav’s Patch” on Tameside

Radio, every Friday night at 6pm. “Pav” or Mike Pavasovic, is a well-respectedjournalist who’s hour-long show featured all the Tameside non-league clubsalong with Glossop North End.Alas, when I tuned in last Friday, he had been replaced by someone else, who

decided to spend half the hour playing music, and then informing us that futureprogrammes would feature various other sports and not just non-league. Myreading of that is that the non-league coverage will be reduced from 55 minutesto around 10!Five Live’s Non-League show continues to be broadcast at the ludicrous time

of 5.30am on a Sunday morning (shunted into the buffers by Sports editors whohave a total disregard for the wonderful world of non-league football), althoughthe podcast can always be found on the internet.I just find it so frustrating that our level of the game is ignored so much, but

let an obscene new contract be signed by one certain individualof shall we say, somewhat limited intelligence, and the wholemedia clubs together to ensure mega-coverage in all the pa-

pers and on all radio and television stations. Some fans, incred-ibly, are proud of the signing!Sorry, obscene is not the word to describe the offer of £300,000

a week. I don’t actually think there is a word that describes it accu-

rately. For those ignorant souls who continue to cough up their hard

earned money to contribute to the vast wealth of such individu-als, all I can say is you must be out of your minds. Each and every one of them is being taken for a ride by clubs,

agents and players, who rely upon their blinkered obsession to blankout all thoughts of reality.

This is a classic example of why I never watchtop level football.Thank goodness for the reassuring presence of

non-league football….real football for those ofsound mind!

Firstly I’d like to welcome the players, man-agement, staff and supporters of OssettTown - hopefully you will enjoy your visit, re-sult apart of course.Saturday saw us make the short journey upto Padiham for our East Lancashire Derby, and it turned out to be a enjoyable after-noon for all concerned with Rammy. It wasa very pleasing display with some fine indi-vidual performances, but more importantlya great team effort. A couple of great goalssaw us return with a well-earned threepoints and send the massive 'Rammy Firm'home happy. A big thank you has to go outto everyone who made the effort to travel, but I’m sure you all had an enjoyable after-noon. The support we take on away days isfantastic and very vocal, with some erm in-teresting songs developing. As a group welove the away days, so thanks to you all.Tonight sees a new management team in

place for Ossett in the shape of the vastlyexperienced John Reed and his staff, andthis season sees them pushing for a playoffspot, so we expect a very tough fixture. Aswith saturday up at padiham, we will belooking for revenge for the loss we sufferedat Ossett earlier on in the season and will tryto keep this impressive run of results going.A couple of updates squad-wise; firstly its

bad news with Chris Denham as he’s had areoccurence of the groin injury which re-quired surgery in his Chorley days and lookslikely to keep him out for the remainder ofthe campain. As for Cedric, we’re just waiting on confir-

mation if his international clearence beforewe see him in a rammy shirt..Hope you enjoy the game tonight and let’s

hear some of the away day noise here at theHarry Williams Riverside.- Glenn

Ramsbottom United maintained their push for a play-offplace with an emphatic victory in the east Lancashire derby.Having succumbed early in the season at home to Padiham, they gained their revenge on an afternoon when the threepoints rarely looked in doubt thanks to two early goals whichset the tone for the match.Despite losing influential midfielder Gary Stopforth due to

a suspension, the Rams were able to welcome back DominicSmalley after a lengthy lay-off, and he looked back to his bestas he lasted over an hour.

Playing downhill, Danny Warrender was inches away fromconnecting with a Grant Spencer cross, before two goals inquick succession put the visitors in the driving seat.

On 13 minutes, a left-wing Spencer corner found JordanHulme almost on his knees at the far post as he managed toget his head to the ball and direct it into the roof of the netfrom close range.Within two minutes, the same combination doubled the ad-

vantage. This time, the corner was swung in from the right, and

Hulme again found space by the far post to flick the ball infrom five yards out.

Spencer had a shout for a penalty turned down when hisshot appeared to strike a defender’s arm, before the sameplayer sent in a rasping free-kick which Sean Davis in thehome goal was relieved to gather.Another corner caused problems for the home defence, and

Lee Gaskell applied the final touch which saw his header clipthe bar and sail over.As the half progressed, Padiham finally made inroads into

the Rams defence, with both Chris Turner and former Ram Ke-iron Pickup going close from free-kicks.For the most part, the Rams were in control, and further ef-

forts from Spencer and Hulme could have extended the leadas the half-time whistle sounded.Full-back Owen Roberts almost added to the score early in

the second half. Firstly, he drove inches over the bar from justoutside the area, before watching his free-kick sail inches overthe top.

Page 18: 25 Ramsbottom United v Ossett Town

Fine work on the left wing from Phil Dean saw Gaskell goagonizingly close to nodding in a third, but he was not to bedenied on the hour mark as he shrugged off a defender tolatch onto a neat through ball from Spencer, and drive it homefrom 15 yards past an exposed Davis in goal. The Storks substitute Louis Mayers tested Grant Shenton in

the Rams goal with a fierce 25-yarder, moments before thehome side found a consolation. On 71 minutes, Danny Boyle found space to fire home from

close range as the ball fell kindly for him in the area to makethe score 3-1.

Just four minutes later, any hopes the home side had ofstaging a comeback were soon extinguished by a contenderfor goal-of-the-season.Dean gathered the ball in his own half before setting off on

a mazy run up-field. He skipped past three challenges as hebroke into the area and confidently fired past Davis to restorethe three goal advantage. A quite superb solo effort. The visitors continued to attack, and with the minutes tick-

ing down, substitute Darren Green saw his goal-bound effortflicked round by Davis for a corner, from which Gaskell lookedon in frustration as his header clipped the outside of the post.

Green still had time to fire in a free-kick that cleared thebar by inches as the Rams completed a comfortable win toconfirm their challenge for the end-of-season lottery and aplace in Evo-Stik Premier.

On this showing, the odds must be very much in theirfavour.

RAMMY IN EXILE - RICHARD ISAACSGood evening y'all!!! Hope all is well.I am sitting in the terminal of Washington Dulles Airport awaiting my

flight back home after a week of enjoyment in Washington DC and Bal-timore and sampling all that the USA has to offer ... mainly crap televi-sion and monsterous food portion sizes which has completely wreckedmy dieting efforts over the last 10 days!It has been quite an education over here on my first real visit across

the pond (I went to Florida but that doesn't really count). 'Soccer' is verymuch a minority sport over here and you only have to flick through theimmense amount of television channels to know which sports are kingaround here ... NFL, basketball, ice hockey, baseball.Oh, and if the USA aren't winning in the

Olympics in Sochi - then it basically doesn'tget mentioned. For example ... "x fromRussia won the gold, y from Sweden the sil-ver but our guy did us proud - oh yes - BillyBob Cheeseburger rode in with a fantasticbronze .... he's the man!!!". Major LeagueSoccer is small time and anyone thinking itis different is kidding themselves.Good luck to David Beckham on his effort

in creating a Miami United team for theMLS in the near future - sorry, but you areheading for failure. Soccer isn't big. Everything else is. But soccer isn't.It took us ages to find a television in a bar showing the ChampionsLeague games during midweek!

But, of course, at 10am on Saturday morning, I was plugged in onthe computer and watching all the activity from Padiham and was de-lighted to see us pick up another three points against the ex-RammyUnited XI (ok, that is an exaggeration!!). Can we be stopped? Anotherwin which keeps us in fifth place and in the play-off hunt and all in thegarden is rosy and hopes are high. Of course, tonights game againstOssett Town sees us play one of the team we have lost to this season, right at the start of the season. There is no such thing as revenge in sport - some say there is - but

we will be out to right that particular result as we did on Saturday afew miles north.Well it is time for the flight home. But I will finish off with

a little bit of 'home' football news and it is a huge congratu-lations to Gosport Borough F.C., who have reached the final of theFA Trophy at Wembley after beating local rivals Havant and Wa-terlooville in the semi-final on Saturday. They are rock bottom of the Skrill South and facing relegation

square in the face but they have a massive day out at Wembleyto look forward to against former Football League oppositionCambridge United in a few weeks time - what a fantasticachievement for them.Which leads me to think that one day, in the non-too-dis-

tant future, could that be Ramsbottom United?YIPPEE-KI-AY RAAAAAAAAAAMY !!!!!!

Ossett Town Football Club was formed in 1936 at apublic meeting chaired by the Mayor of the Borough ofOssett and a former Yorkshire League referee called JohnCarter was given the task of bringing to Ossett the high-est possible standard of football. The new club played inthe Leeds League (later renamed the West YorkshireLeague in 1939), played on a pitch behind the FernHouse Working Mens Club on Wakefield Road and usedvarious local pubs as headquarters.During World War II, the team switched to the Heavy

Woollen League and had to use a pitch on Back Lanewhen the army commandeered Fern House. After the warin 1945, Town joined the Yorkshire League. Town wonthe West Riding County Senior Cup in 1948, beating Salts4-2 at Bradford City’s Valley Parade. In 1950, Town fin-ished 3rd, our best position in the Yorkshire League, wealso scored a record 120 goals that season.Attendances at some games were well over 1,000, dur-

ing the 1940s and 1950s, the Yorkshire League containedthe 'A' teams of Leeds, Huddersfield, Sheffield United,Sheffield Wednesday, Barnsley, Doncaster and so on,many top players learned their trade in these teams, suchas John Charles, Denis Law, Ray Wilson, Peter Swan,Tommy Taylor, Jackie Charlton and many others. In 2003-04, Scott Cooper started the season as man-

ager, but by October Town were bottom of the leagueand Steve Richards took over as manager, Town finished14th, just missing out on promotion to the Premier Divi-sion, because the top 13 clubs were promoted to replacethose clubs who had joined the newly created Confer-ence North division; but the demise of Telford Unitedcreated an extra place in the Premier Division, whichwent to Ossett Town. In Town's first season in the Pre-mier Division, they finished 16th.Season 2012/13 saw the appointment of Craig Elliott

as first team manager. With a number of new playersbeing brought in, it took time to find a settled side andthe team finished a credible 12th in the league, endingup the highest placed West Yorkshire team. However, this season will go down as cup season with the team ar-guably playing in their biggest game of the club’s history, when we lost away to Stockport County in the FA Trophy.Town also reached the semi-final of the County Cup be-fore going out to FC Halifax Town. October 2013 could go down as a momentous month

as Graham Firth stood down as chairman after 28 years, the members voting to appoint James Rogers to takeover the position as well as a number of members joiningthe committee for the first time, 2013/2014 has startedwell, this could be a catalyst for the club to kick-on.

Diabetes

There are nearly 4 million people with diabetes in the UK many of whom but don’t

know it. Type 2 diabetes accounts for around 90% of all people with diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is where the amount of glucose in your blood is too high because

the insulin that is produced by your body does not work properly. It usually appears

in people over the age of 40 but is becoming more common in children, adolescents

and young people.

People with type 2 diabetes experience certain symptoms including being very

thirsty, frequent urination, blurry vision, irritability, tingling or numbness in the

hands or feet or extreme unexplained fatigue.

Physical activity, combined with healthy eating is used to help manage diabetes and

prevent long-term diabetes complications. This includes eating more starchy carbo-

hydrate foods and cutting down on fat, particularly saturated fats. People with

diabetes should also stop smoking and reduce alcohol intake.

There are also herbs you can take to help lower or regulate your blood glucose, such

as cinnamon, ginger and goats rue. Vitality + can provide more advice on these as

Jordan Hulme joined Rammy just beforeChristmas 2011 and the 23- year-oldstriker has found himself playing bothup-front and at right-back. Recently hisconfidence is rocketing and he’s startedto really find his shooting boots. Wecaught up with him during the week. How did you get into playing football, and where did you play before coming toRammy?I’m Rammy born and bred, so unlike mostfootballers I’m actually playing for myhome team, though I started out beingpicked up by United when I was about six.Bolton took me on from age 8 until theylet me go at 16 because they decidedthat I wasn’t physically developedenough for the kind of direct footballthey were playing at the time. I had aspell at Walshaw and then at Padiham, where I scored nine goals in fifteenmatches, before Johnno’s recommenda-tion got me a move up to Clitheroe. KarlGardner, who was in charge at the time, asked Johnno if he knew any decentyoung strikers, as their main forward hadpicked up an injury, and Johnno put myname forward. I played well for them andscored a couple of goals, but the otherstriker came back and then a new man-ager arrived, bringing in his own striker. That’s when Johnno and Bernard sug-gested that I come and give it a go atRammy. So you’d played with Bernard and Johnnobefore?I played 5-a-side against Bernard when Iwas at Woodhey, and with Johnno for awhile at Walshaw. It was good of them togive me a chance at Rammy as my confi-dence was really low at the time. Even atRammy it took me a while to get my headtogether and I was in and out of the teamquite a bit. When your head’s down, yourperformances suffer, and then you hearone or two mutterings amongst the fans.In the end I wasn’t even on the pitch the

day we won the league, which was reallydisappointing; though I have to admit torubbing mud on my knees so that in thephotos it looked like I’d played! Back thenI was waiting, expecting something tohappen and my confidence magicallyreappear, but it doesn’t work like that. You have to make it happen, whether it’sjust yourself or the whole team. All I knowis that my confidence is back, and that’swhat I’m concentrating on.So you reckon thatthis team has whatit takes to get oneof those playoffspots?Absolutely! I think we can really do some-thing with this team. We’ve definitely gotit in us to get to the playoffs, and on ourday we can beat anyone. It’s all in ourown hands, no-one else’s, and providedwe turn up to the games, we can getthere. How did a striker like you end up pullingon the right-back shirt? We were really stuck for a number 2, andthe lads asked if anyone was willing togive it a go. I’m happy to play anywhereon the pitch, so I thought I’d give it a try. Those first couple of gamesI was alright coming forward, but I remember the defend-ing being a bit of trouble. Ireckon I’m starting to reallyget the hang of it now though.I think that attitude sums up somuch that’s right about Rammy- that anyone in the squad iswilling to do anything to getRammy ahead. Would you saythat’s right?I’m really enjoying every-thing at Rammy, they’re re-ally great lads and thewhole club is fantastic.

From the second you arrive at the ground, it’slike one big family. There are no cliques like youget at other clubs, and everyone’s really goodmates. We all share a bit of banter, and sometake more than their fair share while some giveit a bit more. Spenner and Wiz are terrible for sit-ting there handing out abuse while Gary Stop-forth is really hyper and phones me at all hoursto talk rubbish! Owen and Pilky are the mostsensible, and Owen goes on about what he atelast night and how healthy it is - though to befair, Pilky went on a mad bender at the ChristmasDoo and changed a few people’s minds.I think one of the best things at Rammy is theway our support is growing. The atmosphere upat Lancaster was amazing, with everyone singingtheir heads off, and the crowds are getting big-ger and bigger. The place is really rocking, though sometimes it’s only Johnno’s dad thatyou can hear singing. I hope we can keep it get-ting better and better - it’d be lovely to hearsome of that singing at home games. While we’re talking about the Christmas Do andgoing on mad benders, what’s this thing you’vegot about getting your kit off? And what doesyour girlfriend think of it?God knows; I’ve always done it. No idea why cosit’s not like I’m buff or anything. More often thannot it’s Johnno egging me on after I’ve had a fewtoo many beers. Lorna’s not too happy about it,but she’s ok as long as it’s only with the lads. What do you get up to off the pitch, work-wise?I’ve just finished uni, studying Physical Educationand School Sport. I need some experience work-ing in schools and then I go back and do anotheryear at uni. At the moment it’s youth work that’skeeping me out of trouble. One last question - what’s the best thing aboutbeing at Rammy?Playing for my home team is the best thing, andthe great fans... hold on, that’s two things!

EDITORIAL - SUPPORTERS CLUB

First of all an apology to Robbo. I’d somehow got it into my head, aftertalking to Katy, that Robbo’s ankle injury was serious enough to causehim to pack up playing. I bumped into him at Padiham and he’s expect-ing his operation this week and is likely to be back playing at Rammysometime soon. I really hope so because, as I’ve said on a number ofoccasions, Robbo is most definitely a Rammy legend, and someone thatany team would be delighted to have in their lineup. I remember the first time that

we watched Rammy; I lookeddown the teamsheets and sawthat some fella called AndrewSensale had been scoring shed-loads of goals but ended uppushed to the bench on the re-turn of this Robinson bloke twomatches before. As we sat in thetea-bar before kick-off, I won-dered what was so special aboutRobinson that he could deposeone of the league’s top strikers soeasily... ten minutes into the gamewe could see exactly why. He har-ried, hassled, out-headed, out-chased and manically hunted down everyball that was his to chase (and many that weren’t). He disposessed de-

fenders, the goal-keeper, midfielders, even the referee! As we watched more and more Rammy matches, we saw Robbopop up in midfield, at centre-back and even in nets, with no careat all about how many goals he was chalking up. Robbo is undoubtedly a Rammy legend, and I can’t wait to

see him pulling on the shirt again. My apologies for the misun-derstanting.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Tonight’s game is another one of those humdinging six-pointers,
so let’s hope for a game that proves to be as much entertainment asJordan’s new haircut! Bring it on!
