Welcome to the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium this afternoon for whatpromises to be an absolute cracker! We welcome our match officials to Rams-bottom, and our opponents who have ventured over the hill to be with ustoday.

As this game was scheduled to take place at the end of last year, but wasyet another victim of the wettest winter on record, it is the first time that theRams have played Farsley this season. So a warm Lancashire welcome to ourYorkshire visitors.The chase for the play-offs is turning into a fascinating contest. Farsley are

now just one point above ourselves, and the two games between the twoclubs could well prove to be decisive. We return to the Throstles Nest in threeweeks time, and already the Rams supporters have hired a coach to take a fairfollowing over there. Along with those who will travel by car, we can expectgood support for what is a much-anticipated fixture. Before then, of course,we have the little matter of a ninety minute contest here today! We go intothe game with a positive frame of mind. Our thumping of Harrogate RA in thelast game down here was emphatic, to say the least.Last Saturday’s contest at Church Lane was a nail-biter. Once again the sup-

port for the Rams was magnificent. Not only are we attracting large numbersof supporters to away games these days, but the atmosphere created is betterthan ever before. Flags and singing – wonderful! Credit to the lads for theirperformance at New Mills. In the early stages it looked like we were carryingon from the Harrogate performance.Then things began to go wrong. After all, it was New Mills we were playing,

so I suppose we would never have expected anything else. The injury to GrantShenton was a massive blow, especially considering that from that incidentthe Millers notched an undeserved equaliser.

But we continued to take the game to the opposition, and had GrantSpencer’s penalty gone in, the 4-1 lead would have effectively ended thegame.As it was, the game turned on it’s head, and Dominic’s debatable red card

with quarter of an hour to go really did test the will of our defence, and theability of our stand-in keeper, Bernard, who was superb.It’s great to get the monkey off the back when it comes to New Mills. They

have been a good side over the years, but I believe their financialbacker has pulled out this season, and their results prove howquestionable it is to rely upon one person to prop up a club.Every club has it’s level within the game, and sometimes over-ambition can prove to be fatal. Ask today’s visitors. FarsleyCeltic went on a fine run which catapulted them up to the Con-ference National. Whilst understandably taking the opportu-nity to compete at a level which had previously been wellabove them, the repercussions were such that the old clubfolded. Ambition is fine, but it needs to be realistic.The newly-formed club have done well since their reformation,

but the current officials will no doubt be aware of the past andkeep current ambitions within a realistic scale. They, like ourselves,though, will be desperate to secure one of those four play-off

spots. I hope they manage it, as long as they fin-ish one place below us!Enjoy your non-league football!

Good afternoon and welcome to the HarryWilliams Riverside Stadium for this afternoon’sclash. We’d like to extend a warm welcome toall the players, management and supporters ofFarsley, and hope they enjoy their trip over thePennines.We have been looking forward to today’s gameall week after saturday’s win against a New Millsside who’ve always seemed to get the better ofus results-wise over the years. I’m pleased to saythat we finally ended the unwanted run of neverwinning against them, and what a way toachieve that; a game that simply had it all. Wegot a first half hatrick from Gassy, a bad injuryto Shents (that’s a massive blow to us all as he’sin my opinion the best keeper in the league),Bern stepping up and putting himself in the fir-ing line in goal and I must say doing a great job,so hats off to him. It reaffirms just what ourRammy spirit is all about. then we got a missedpenalty which could have put the game out ofsight at 1-4, then we conceeded a penalty andwent in at the break 2-3. Next, a man sent off,and to withstand the last 10-15 minutes like wedid surely all contributes to a massive threepoints. When you look back at the record booksit will simply say a 3-2 win and three points. Inour eyes all of the above makes it much morethan just three points, and to leave the field tothe noise that our ever increasing followingmade was an unbelievable feeling. Thank you toeach and every one of you who travelled over tosupport us. I said in my last notes that therewould be a few more ups and downs but I didn’texpect so many in one 90 mins!Onto today, and we all know how important

all of our remaining games are. Hopefully thecouple of additions we’re hoping to sign beforethe game will have been completed and you willget to see them in a Rammy shirt this afternoon. All that’s left to say is please get behind the

lads again today and hopefully we can the rightresult. Enjoy the game...Coyrgle

Ramsbottom United returned towinning ways in emphatic style asthey completely dominated theiropponents with a five star display.The side from north Yorkshiremust be sick of the sight of theRams. Having played the Lan-cashire side four times since thelatter gained promotion, they havebeen on the receiving end of fourdefeats, having leaked 15 goalsand scoring none in the process.Tuesday night was as emphatic avictory as was possible, with fivedifferent goal-scorers helpingpush the team back into con-tention for a play-off place. De-spite their dominance, the Ramscould quite easily have fallen be-hind early on, when the firstchance of the game fell to Harro-gate.Alex Metcalf was played throughthe middle, but with only GrantShenton, in goal, to beat, he firedwell wide of the target. Within aminute, however, the tone of thenight had been set.The home side immediatelypushed forward, and Lee Gaskellbeat the offside trap to fire in a su-perb shot which was brilliantlypushed round by RA keeper PeterCrook. Crook however, turnedfrom hero to villain as the cornercame in. Danny Warrender wasfirst to the ball, but Crook ap-peared to have his header withinhis grasp, but inexplicably fumbledit as it went over the line, to givethe Rams a morale-boosting ninthminute lead.Crook, however, was in the rightplace to keep out a Billy Priestleyheader from a Gary Stopforth free-kick, and a direct free-kick fromGaskell. Gaskell then headed widefrom another free-kick as thehome side began to dominateproceedings.Jordan Hulme’s persistence paidoff as he wriggled past his de-fender on the by-line, but ChrisDenham, returning after injury,was unable to hit the target.It was no surprise when theRams doubled their lead on 35minutes. A fine run from Stopforth

saw the industrious midfielderfeed the on-rushing Phil Dean, andthe latter fired home from just in-side the box. Hulme hit the sidenetting, before a rare chance atthe other end proved to be thefinal action of the first half. NathanCartman wriggled through only tosee Shenton palm the ball away,and the follow-up also hit the sidenetting.Dean was thwarted by Crook asthe second half began, before hiscross found Hulme, but he wasinches wide from 15 yards.In a desperate attempt to getback into the game, Metcalf’s 25yard effort sailed inches wide ofthe post, but Harrogate attackswere rare as the Rams totally con-trolled the game.They were rewarded in the 62minute when a neat flick on fromStopforth put Gaskell through ongoal and he found his spot from15 yards to end the game as acontest. A fine move involvingDean Gaskell and Dominic Smalleyended with a shot that sailedinches over the bar, before a finethrough ball from Priestley sentHulme scampering through. Fortu-nately for the visitors Crook wasable to snuff out the danger, buthe wasn’t so fortunate just sixtyseconds later when an identicalopportunity arrived. This timeHulme made no mistake as hefired the ball home for the Ramsfourth on 73 minutes. Hulme fired another chanceover before Priestley finished thescoring on 82 minutes. A fine crossfrom the left from Darren Green,who had an excellent game inmidfield, landed perfectly forPriestley who volleyed home firsttime from 12 yards out.Hulme had a shot cleared off theline as the minutes ticked down,but the final whistle sounded on aperfect night for the home side.Another three points, and an-other convincing victory as theRams continue to battle for thatfinal play-off spot, a battle that islooking more intriguing as theweeks pass.

Ramsbottom United finally beat New Mills at thetenth attempt, but in keeping with tradition, theyhad to do it the hard way. The Millers had won allbut two of the previous nine meetings betweenthe two clubs, with just two draws being the re-ward for the Rams attempts over the years. How-ever, after seemingly strolling through the earlystages of this one, a bad injury and a sending offensured that their fight to finally grasp three pointsoff their opponents was never going to be easy.

The visitors had the perfect start, when athrough ball down the slope confused the de-fender and Lee Gaskell raced on to plant a firmshot past Peter Collinge in the home goal. Thatearly boost seemed to spur the Rams on as theylaunched attack after attack with Dean, twice, and

Pilkington all going close to extending the lead.But on 14 minutes came the injury which saw

the Rams having to re-shuffle. Grant Shentonmade a fine close range save from the over-lap-ping Dan Hewitt, but in doing so, caught the ballbelow his body, and badly injured his left ankle. Itproved to be a double blow for the Rams, for, afterlengthy treatment to the keeper, from a throw-inthat resulted, the ball was fed back into the middleof the area where the unmarked Dan Shaw firedhome from 15 yards to level the scores. Shentontried to carry on, but it was obvious he was in pain.His defenders did an admirable job of ensuringthat he had nothing to do for the next 15 minutes,whilst the attackers helped the cause by firing inanother two goals.

Page 22: 28 Ramsbottom United v Farsley

On 25 minutes Grant Spencer sent over a superb ball toPhil Dean on the left. Dean made his way to the by-linebefore putting over a cross for Gaskell to nod home bythe far post.

Five minutes later, the striker completed a 26-minutehat-trick with the goal of the game. Owen Roberts floateda diagonal 50 yard ball over the Millers defence into thepath of Gaskell, who fired home an unstoppable volleyfrom an acute angle, that flew in off the far post. 3-1 tothe Rams, at which point any attempt to keep Shenton onthe pitch was proving fruitless. On came joint-managerBernard Morley to replace the custodian, and take hisplace between the sticks, as he had done on an odd oc-casion in the past.Then came the tale of two penalties, which in effect, to-

tally transformed the game. On 37 minutes, Darren Greenwas adjudged to have been brought down in the area, andup stepped Spencer to dispatch what would probablyhave been a game-ending penalty. Alas, he struck the ballover the bar and the score remained at 3-1. Just beforehalf-time another penalty was awarded, this time to thehome side. Morley and Billy Priestley made a hash of col-lecting a loose ball in the area, and in so doing, a homeforward went sprawling. James Hampson took the respon-sibility, and unlike Spencer, his effort found the back ofthe net. From a possible 4-1 advantage, the Rams went infor the break with a slim 3-2 lead.Gaskell was having a fine game. He almost added to his

tally with an overhead kick that just cleared the bar, andearly in the second half he twice went close to openingup a bigger gap between the sides. A header from a Deancross was cleared by the post, before he spotted Collingeoff his line, but his delicate lob again just cleared the bar.Spencer fed Green, but his goal-bound shot was deflectedfor a corner, then Roberts tantalising cross fell just pastthe far post. Green should have found the target from 15yards but fired wide before the Rams were reduced to tenmen.

Dominic Smalley barged a Millers forward off the ballon the edge of the area, and the referee deemed him tobe the last man and promptly showed the red card. Thatloss turned the game completely.Playing down the slope, the home side threw everything

at the visitors, with free-kick after free-kick having to bedealt with by the defenders and make-shift keeper. Morleydid all he was asked to do, including a superb close rangestop from Mike Smith who volleyed goalwards from tenyards out. Morley dived to his right to push what lookedlike a certain equaliser for a corner.Having resisted all the late pressure, Gaskell could well

have killed the game off in the final minutes when hechased the ball into the area. He drove his shot straightat Collinge though, but the whistle sounded a couple ofminutes later much to the relief of the large band ofRamsbottom supporters who had made the journey to thePeak District.A hard-earned three points from a game that had every-

thing. A hat-trick, two penalties, a sending-off and a nastyinjury. In the end, despite the late rearguard action, theRams took the points their overall play deserved, and theywere all the sweeter having at last come at the expense ofNew Mills.The race for the play-offs shows no sign of abating.

Farsley AFC were formed in June 2010 from the embers ofFarsley Celtic F.C which entered Administration in June 2009whilst in the Blue Square North and which failed to fulfil its fix-tures eventually being expelled from that league early in 2010.The old Farsley club (the name Celtic being added later) initiallycompeted in the Leeds Amateur leagues and played its firstgame at the current site in 1948. Throughout the 1950’s and 60’sCeltic established themselves in the Yorkshire Leagues, beingcrowned champions in 1959-60 and 1968-69, although failing tobe promoted as a result of ground regulations. A First Round FACup tie against Tranmere Rovers at Leeds United’s Elland Roadground in 1974 proved to be the highlight of the decade, andthe 11,000 crowd that saw the Celts lose 2-0 to a Steve Coppellinspired Rovers is still the largest crowd in the club’s history.As the Yorkshire and Midland leagues merged in 1982, Farsley

began in Division One North. By the mid 80’s the club was invitedinto the Northern Premier League.After a few largely uninspiring seasons, the new decade broughtunparalleled success. In 2004-05 under the inspired manage-ment of Lee Sinnott, the team won the Unibond League PremierDivision only to have points deducted as the result of Spenny-moor Town going out of business and its results being ex-punged. The reduction in points resulted in the Celts securingonly a play-off place, losing controversially on penalties againstWorkington in the final.Promotion was secured the following season after a playoff

final victory against North Ferriby and in the following season,the club’s first in the Conference North, they reached the firstround of the FA Cup losing in a replay to MK Dons as well as se-curing promotion to the Conference National following a mem-orable evening at the Pirelli Stadium in Burton Upon Trent, whenSimeon Bambrook’s last minute penalty saw the Celts beat Hink-ley United 4-3.

A single season of Conference National football resulted inrelegation to the Conference North. On-going financial difficul-ties saw the Administrators appointed in June 2009 with theclub’s results expunged in March 2010 when the Administratorprohibited the club from fulfilling its fixtures.The re-formed club were placed in the NCEL Premier Division

for their first season which turned out to be highly successfulwith a league and cup double recorded. Many of the formerplayers remained loyal to the club and top spot was held formuch of the season, with the title confirmed on the penultimateweekend of the season. The club also reached two cup finals, theNCEL Presidents Cup, in which Tadcaster won but the seasonended on a positive note with the League Cup being lifted de-spite Farsley having to play the majority of the final with 10 men.The 2011/12 season was almost as successful, with a top five

spot being secured ensuring qualification for the play-offs. Un-fortunately, the semi-final opponents were Witton Albion whowon 3-0 and deservedly booked a place in the final, going ontowin promotion after defeating Curzon Ashton in the final.Last year’s league season didn’t quite go to plan with a disas-

trous run in the closing months, saw Neil Parsley’s side go with-out a win in the final eight games. Inconsistent form before thispoint had all but put an end to the club’s play-off chase and a14th place finish was all that could be mustered. On a positivenote, Farsley reached the quarter-finals of the Doodson SportsCup. After beating Ossett Albion and Clitheroe, Farsley beat Pre-mier Division opposition Whitby Town and Worksop Town be-fore bowing out to Matlock Town in the final eight.

Diabetes

There are nearly 4 million people with diabetes in the UK many of whom but don’t

know it. Type 2 diabetes accounts for around 90% of all people with diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is where the amount of glucose in your blood is too high because

the insulin that is produced by your body does not work properly. It usually appears

in people over the age of 40 but is becoming more common in children, adolescents

and young people.

People with type 2 diabetes experience certain symptoms including being very

thirsty, frequent urination, blurry vision, irritability, tingling or numbness in the

hands or feet or extreme unexplained fatigue.

Physical activity, combined with healthy eating is used to help manage diabetes and

prevent long-term diabetes complications. This includes eating more starchy carbo-

hydrate foods and cutting down on fat, particularly saturated fats. People with

diabetes should also stop smoking and reduce alcohol intake.

There are also herbs you can take to help lower or regulate your blood glucose, such

as cinnamon, ginger and goats rue. Vitality + can provide more advice on these as

RAMMY IN EXILE - RICHARD ISAACSGood afternoon one and all - hope all are well and the nerves have

eased somewhat after the events of last Saturday.As a Rammy supporter who wasn't at the game, watching it via the

Twitter feed was just as nervewracking as it was had I been at the game.The delight of seeing us 1-0 and 3-1 up in the first half-hour was over-taken by concern for Shents and then concern for the three points aswe missed a penalty and then conceded one before half-time.And while being told that New Mills were not that great a side, they

probably didn't need to be given that Bernard was in goal and anythingcould happen!! I remember the time before at Congleton in the finalgame of the NWCFL season that we came second when 'The Cat' wasin net with Shents struggling to get to the game in time and, well, itwas a joy to behold but probably not described as Bern's favourite po-sition as a shot came in and he just watched it crash into the back ofthe goal!!!

I haven't been that nervous watching the Twitter feed since 'that'Skelmersdale game last May. I was watching a rugby game, once again,but barely really paying much attention to the clash of Hampshire clubsTottonians and Winchester, just continually checking the feed to seewhat was happening. With Southampton clinging onto a 3-2 lead athome to Norwich, having been comfortably 3-0 up with less than fiveminutes to go, lets just say that my phone was getting plenty of atten-tion and the sheer elation when the final score information appearedwas palpable.Of course, it wasn't just that ... it was NEW MILLS!!!!! Yes, we have fi-

nally beaten bloody New Mills! The bain of our lives for many a year inthe NWCFL, we re-engaged our battles with them in the Evo-Stik whenwe followed them up to a year later but it took 11 games, featuringeight defeats and two draws previously and many a heartache to finallylay to rest that particular bogey.The match on 6th October 2012 at Church Lane, our first against them

in the Evo-Stik and it is one that still sticks in the craw, even 18 monthslater. I was in Florida, in the Aventura Mall to the north of Miami.We absolutely hammered them! Everything that I read on our feed

and on the New Mills feed was saying exactly that - it was only a matterof time before that blasted Millers duck was finally banished forever. Icontinued to walk around the shops, using the mall's wifi to keepacross the news, waiting for that joyeous moment where theRams could finally leave the High Peak with a victory. It didn'thappen - not only did it not happen by a goal in the 88thminute snatched the win for the home side.Never before has the south-eastern peninsula of the United

States of America heard such blasphemous expletives as it didthat afternoon. Bears have never had sorer heads as mine thatday.So my joy was unconfined on Saturday, as you can imagine!!!And now we come to this game with Farsley, a very tough

game against a side that are holding one of the convertedplay-offs places ahead of us. So let's hope we can rekindlethe spirit of Saturday and keep our own hopes firmly alive. C'MON YOU RAMS!!!!!!!

EDITORIAL - SUPPORTERS CLUBWhat a game! Last week’s battle of New Mills had everything, and was one of the

biggest nail-biters we’ve had for a very long time - let’s face it, whenyou’re 3-0 up by half-past three, games tend to lose their sparkle as arule. But not this one!

Our heart-felt best wishes must go to Grant Shenton, whose anklelooked to be in a fairly bad way. The latest news is that it’s a fracturedtibia, so he’ll be out for a good while. Astonishingly he tried to battleon, but as you could see by the way he hobbled off on crutches, it wasway beyond the point where adrenaline will get you through. ... and so, bring on

the Bernard! Flatter-ingly bedecking inpink, The MightyBernard “The Cat”Morley took to thefield, with all ourhopes pinned on him,and he didn’t let usdown! Admittedlythere were a few jitterswhen he rugby tack-led the striker to thefloor for a penalty,much like poorTommy Toth did last week, though perhaps with a bit more vigour.However, as the clock ticked down and New Mills piled on the pressure,he made a couple of fantastic saves, particularly the punch at fullstretch, and when the ball bounced awkwardly just in front of him witha striker bearing down.It’s probably three years since we last saw Bernard in nets, and the

mists of time have thankfully started to erase the memories of that day,but New Mills, and the way that every Rammy player rallied to thecause, will live long in the memory.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~You don’t need me to tell you what a humdinging six-pointer tonight’s
match is. We all know what’s at stake over the next couple of weeks,and our having to play Farsley home and away, as well as Warringtonand Bamber Bridge, means that it’s squeaky-bum time right through tothe end of the season. Yes, these games are six-pointers, but to be hon-est, I’d settle for our run-in any day. Farsley’s last few games reads like
a who’s who at the top of the Northern Premier League, and if theymanage to bag a play-off spot at the end of that lot then they thor-oughly deserve to be there.
So, let battle commence, and let’s hope that the rumourednew signing from Radcliffe Borough makes an appearancetonight as, with the loss of Chris Denham and Grant Shenton toinjury as well as the pending suspension of Dom Smalley, we’redefinitely going to need all hands to the pump!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Just one last thing... If you’re reading this in print, with Darren

Green on the cover, then be sure to go and take a look at the bangup-to-date version online at www.issuu.com/rufc

Bernard can’t believe it’s a penalty when he’s clearly gone for the ball!
