    Thank goodness the wet winter appears to have finally dried itself out, andhopefully there will be no more postponements. With this wish in mind, wefinally welcome everyone concerned with Harrogate Railway Athletic to theHarry Williams Riverside Stadium tonight.After our disappointing defeat on Saturday against one of our bogey sides,

    Cammell Laird, lets hope that our good run against tonights opponents cancontinue. Three wins from three games since we gained promotion, and withan eye firmly planted on that final play-off spot, a fourth victory tonightwould suit very well. Of course, football isnt quite that easy to predict, butwe really will be going all out to dispense from the memory Saturdays per-formance, which although it showed plenty of applicaton, produced nothingin front of goal. Lets hope tonight can be the start of another good run.BRILLIANT

    Anyone who was at Prescot Cables ten days ago, no doubt smiled at thetime, but for those who werent there, the funniest moment of the afternoonwas when Scott Burton (I wish him a speedy recovery, by the way) lashedhome our third goal. The PA man began the announcement of the scorerwith the words, with the cartoon character intonation, Thats the way to doit!. Superb!CRAZYThose of you who know me will be aware of my dislike (the actual word is

    a little stronger, but that will do for now) of top level football. If I needed areason to question football at that level, you only have to see the news thatcame out last week. Two clubs, now in the Championship, but recently in theobscene Premier League, have unveiled collective debts of over 330,000,000!Step forward QPR and Bolton Wanderers as classic examples of how not torun a football club. Thank goodness Ramsbottom United have Harry at thehelm!SAD

    Vauxhall Motors have announced that they will be quitting ConferenceNorth at the end of the season. For a number of years this club has performed

    miracles by just staying at such an elevated position. Now, alas,financial reality has hit home that average gates of around150 are just not enough to justify playing in such an exalted

    league. I was talking to their Chairman Alan Bartlam a fewyears ago and he was telling me of the difficulty in running anon-league team on Wirral.

    Ellesmere Port Town, New Brighton and Ellesmere Portand Neston have all folded in the recent past. Cammell Laird,as we know, survive on average gates of around 60, whilst

    Motors, two leagues higher, have struggled to convince thelocals that non-league football is an attractive proposition. Creditto the board at Rivacre Park for deciding that the long-term futureof the club has to be protected, but it really is a sorry and sad sit-

    uation.I wish Alan and everyone else there all the

    best for the future.Enjoy your non-league football!

    sWe welcome all the players, management, staff,

    and supporters of Harrogate Railway to the HarryWilliams Riverside Stadium for this eveningsclash. We wish them a safe journey here andhome, and hope they enjoy the hospitality weoffer.With ten league games to go we find ourselves

    really at the business end of the season. There isstill a long way to go with many twists and turnsahead, with possible lows and highs, but what weall must do is not panic. We are still in a fantasticposition, tucked in 6th, just outside the playoffs.Teams still have to play each other and points willbe dropped where possibly people dont expect.Im not saying we are relying on other to slip upas we still have to play the likes of Farsley twice,so in reality it could go all the way down to anerve jangling last game of the season yet again;only this time hopefully with a better outcome..Im buzzing, and I know the lads are, to have

    another home game so soon after Saturdays dis-sapointment.; lets face it we battered them andon another day could easily have come away win-ning the game 2 or 3 nil, and if that had hap-pened then everyone would have said what agreat performance. In some ways its a sign ofhow far we have progressed that teams comehere fearing the worst and have to set up to spoilus and stop us playing our game. Thats what wehave to become used to - if teams try to take uson footballing-wise then they often come out onthe wrong end. So we have to look at the bigger picture and

    not let setbacks de-rail our aims to achieve a playoff spot. What I will say, and it was commented on afterthe game Saturday, is what fantastic supportagain you all provided even though thingswerent going our way.Hopefully we can get a couple of bodies back

    in for the run in, as were going to need the squad.On a bad note we lost Scott on Saturday to apretty bad and deep gash to his ankle thoughhopefully it wont keep him out too long.Its a massive ten games to go; to coin a phrase,

    its ten cup finals, starting tonight.Please keep getting behind the lads as you have,and we love seeing the traveling army away.Keep believing...enjoy the game- Glenn

  • 0 - 2Harry Williams Riverside Stadium8th March 2014Att: 305Rammy Goals: Cammell Laird Goals: Henders pen (33), Couch (56)

  • The curse of the Lairds struckagain as the Wirral visitors com-pleted a quick-fire double over theplay-off chasers, meaning that afterfour games, the Rams have yet tobeat Cammell Laird. Not that therewas any lack of effort, for the hostsran the game for the most part, buttheir opponents defence held firmas the usually free-scoring Ramsfailed to find the net in a leaguegame for the first time since lastAugust.

    The early loss of inspirationalmidfielder Scott Burton hardlyhelped the cause. A tough tacklethat went unpunished left theplayer with an open gash that re-quired substantial treatment, andhe was substituted after just 15minutes. The Rams, though, stillhad much of the possession butdespite controlling the game forlong spells, they failed to find a waythrough Lairds resolute defence,and, particularly in the first half,rarely looked like scoring.Visiting keeper Mike Langley had

    to cut out a dangerous cross fromGrant Spencer, with Phil Dean andLee Gaskell lurking for a loose ball,and he had to be alert when asnap-shot from Spencer looked likesneaking in by his left-hand post. Infairness, the visitors also failed totrouble the Rams defence for themost part, but gained a foot-holdon 34 minutes via the penalty spot.

    Substitute Tommy Toth was ad-judged to have brought downLairds Craig Cairns as both playerschased a ball that looked like goingout of play. Jamie Henders grate-fully accepted the chance to openthe scoring by blasting the spot-kick home, and for all their effort,the Rams found themselves onegoal down.The second half began with some

    exerted pressure from the homeside as they went in search of an

    equaliser. Gaskell was presentedwith an opportunity when he wason the receiving end of an intendedback pass, but he couldnt find thespot, whilst the same forward wasinches away from converting an ex-cellent left-wing cross from Dean.United were made to pay for the

    missed chances on 57 minuteswhen Cammell doubled their ad-vantage. A superbly struck free-kicksaw home keeper Grant Shentonproduce a magnificent save as hedeflected the ball onto the cross-bar. The defenders then appeareduncertain as to how to clear thedanger, and the confusion allowedJohn Couch to make them pay byfiring the loose ball home from justinside the area.Gaskell should have reduced the

    arrears ten minutes later when heinexplicably struck the bar when itlooked easier to score, thenSpencer found Langley in the rightplace to deny him from close range.On 73 minutes the visitors should

    have added a third. With the Ramscommitted to attack, Laird brokedown the left. An inch-perfect lowcross from Cairns found an un-marked Henders at the far post, butthe normally reliable striker some-how managed to slice the ball highand wide.

    A long-range effort from BillyPriestley sailed harmlessly wide,whilst substitute player-managerAnthony Johnson couldnt get hishead onto an inviting looping lobfrom Spencer.The Laird held on quite comfort-

    ably to produce a minor shock andput a dent in Ramsbottoms pro-motion ambitions.For all their possession, it turned

    out to be one of those days whennothing seemed to come off for theRams, and they must be glad to seethe back of Cammell Laird for atleast one more season.

    Diabetes

    There are nearly 4 million people with diabetes in the UK many of whom but dont

    know it. Type 2 diabetes accounts for around 90% of all people with diabetes.

    Type 2 diabetes is where the amount of glucose in your blood is too high because

    the insulin that is produced by your body does not work properly. It usually appears

    in people over the age of 40 but is becoming more common in children, adolescents

    and young people.

    People with type 2 diabetes experience certain symptoms including being very

    thirsty, frequent urination, blurry vision, irritability, tingling or numbness in the

    hands or feet or extreme unexplained fatigue.

    Physical activity, combined with healthy eating is used to help manage diabetes and

    prevent long-term diabetes complications. This includes eating more starchy carbo-

    hydrate foods and cutting down on fat, particularly saturated fats. People with

    diabetes should also stop smoking and reduce alcohol intake.

    There are also herbs you can take to help lower or regulate your blood glucose, such

    as cinnamon, ginger and goats rue. Vitality + can provide more advice on these as

  • RAMMY IN EXILE - RICHARD ISAACSGood evening one and all, hope you are all well and looking forward

    to tonight's game.You will be pleased to know that I am not here as I headed back toSouthampton on Sunday afternoon. Why would you be pleased ... well,my last two visits to watch the Rams have been the away game at Cam-mell Laird and the home game against Cammell Laird. Both defeats! So,maybe its time for me to just keep my watching brief from afar.Maybe it is time for me to give up watching football completely. Hav-

    ing sat alongside Tony Cunningham in Gigg Lane's South Stand on Fri-day evening to 'endure' the Black Pudding derby between Bury andRochdale (which was a dreadful game but some of the Bury brethrenseemed to enjoy it and the police had a lovely evening too!!!), we bothagreed that we would be much better entertained a few hours later atthe HWRS.Entertaining, yes it was but ultimately disappointing as two teams

    went at it. Sadly, there was only one team actually playing football andthe other just scrapping away trying to get what they could. Unfortu-nately for us, the latter won.Which means that the battle for the play-offs just got that little bit

    harder and we come into tonight's game with Harrogate Railway Ath-letic (shall we just call them HRA at the HWRS, it's easier!!!) on the backof a defeat and with Scott Burton missing with a huge lump missingfrom his ankle, courtesy of a nasty looking challenge that the refereedeemed to be unworthy of his card waving. Cammell Laird had 5 playersbooked on Saturday ... but the player who caused Scott's injury wasn'tone of them. Shows you what kind of game it was.Once again, I look back on a terrific weekend and it was so good to

    see so many in attendance. 305 for a game against the Lairds, whobarely bring anyone, shows just how far we have come. It is always goodto come and watch the Rams. As I said to a few in the bar on Saturdayevening, my mates at home just do not get my affiliation to this greatclub. They don't get it at all. They would if they saw the great camer-aderie that is always on show inside and outside the ground.It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening in the bar afterwards with the

    supporters and the players until such a late hour. It was also good tosee Matthew Edgington and his dad John as well. It is alwaysgood to see them, considering what happened to Matt andthe family just a few short years ago and to see our formerplayer is good spirits are returning to the Edgy that we all remem-ber from his playing days is a great boost.So, come on the Rams. Keep that superb 'singing section'

    going (which I enjoyed being a part of on Saturday!!). Onwardsto greater things. As it would fill me with such pride to be ableto tell my mates to watch Sky Sports News every single dayand see the name of Ramsbottom United there in the Evo-StikPremier. They would know who we are then ......YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOU RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMS!!!!!

  • The club was formed in 1935 by workers at the StarbeckLNER depot and joined the local Harrogate League withsome success and won the British Railways National Cup in1946. They borrowed 1,500 from the LNER and more than300 workers contributed one old penny per week to repaythe loan. This money secured ownership of the current Sta-tion View site. The 1950s saw the club progress through theWest Yorkshire League to the Yorkshire League and theymade the second round proper of the FA Amateur Cup in1953, going out 3-2 at Harwich & Parkstone, a special trainconveying supporters to the tie. Sadly the loco sheds closedin 1959, subsequently affecting finances as many of theworkers, and players, had to leave the area.

    In 2002 after a bewildering qualifying competition, themany who travelled to Berkshire witnessed a 2-1 win atSlough Town in the first round proper of the FA Cup. Thelowest-ranking club ever to reach the second round weredrawn at home to Bristol City, top of the second division,the highest-ranking club in the competition at that stage.This was a fairy-tale tie. Whats more, Railway opted to playthe game at home. Temporary stands adorned Station View,Sky TV beamed the game around the globe and the clubwas the focus of the football world for a couple of hours inDecember 2002. Bristol City were made to fight for their 3-1 win, Steve Davey netting with 17 minutes to go, but once

    again an injury-time goal sealed Railways fateIn 2008 the league form proved to be rather erratic but

    Railway finished well clear of the relegation zone in the end.Incredibly, another mighty FA Cup run dominated and thelittle club from Yorkshire reached the second round properfor a second time. A battling home victory over then un-beaten rivals Harrogate Town was the undoubted highlightof the qualifying rounds before Blue Square side Droylsdenwere sent packing 2-0 in the first round. Mansfield Towncame to Station View on a soggy Sunday and BBC Match OfThe Day screened the game live this time, complete with RayStubbs. Mark Lawrenson and Jonathan Pearce. Mansfieldwon 3-2 but not before two second-half goals from DannyDavidson gave them late scares. The 2012-13 season started with ex-Liversedge manager

    Billy Miller and his assistant ex-Railway favourite Lee Ash-worth in charge. Although most of the players were from aleague below it was a struggle to start with but things camegood with a brand of football that hadnt been seen at Sta-tion View for some time and by the end of the season Railhad finished in 18th position with a total of 41 points wellclear of the relegation zone. In addition Harrogate Railwayfinished with the best Discipline record not only in theNorthern part of the League but in all 3 Evo-Stik leagues.

  • EDITORIAL - SUPPORTERS CLUBWhat is it with

    Cammell Laird? Evenwhen we chuck tenup front, the sodsbeat us, and in frontof a really decent-sized crowd as well.You could see thefrustration on all theplayers faces, andJordan really bootedthe barrier behindthe goal after thedefender once morerode his luck to get a toe in the way... but then is it luck? Cammell Lairdare one of the hardest teams to break down; weve struggled againstthem each time weve had the misfortune of playing them, most notablylast year when we were chasing the play-offs. Theyre a strong, disci-plined and ultimately frustrating team that know exactly how to matchteams like ours. Sadly its not really down to luck, or them being ourbogey team (unlike New Mills who we face next week!), its just that wehavent got the strength to break them down; particularly after ScottBurton got carried off with a very nasty gash to his leg.So, to cheer us all up, Ive decided to make the online version of

    tonights programme a Supporters Special Issue! If you buy a pro-gramme at the game then you get the original one that we printed backwhen we were supposed to play Harrogate the first time, complete witha printed sheet with this editorial. If you go home and have a look atthe online version however, then you get (completely free of charge!) aspecial bumper edition with loads of photos from around the ground.Although lots of people really like to get a printed programme (me in-cluded), the online version is being read by more and more folk as theweeks go by - Saturdays was read by over 140 people, which is prettygood going. I suspect well surpass that number this week, as everyonewill be wanting to see if weve included a full-page photo of them!Apologies if you got a shock seeing yourself in print, and I promise tobuy a drink for the poor fella who inadvertently ended up on the cover- I hope he doesnt mind. If I missed you out this time then give me a

    wave next time the camera gets pointed in your direction; or alter-natively do what Lee Gaskells mum did and dive for cover!

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~A big thankyou to everyone who signed up for the SupportersClub on Saturday. Its great to see so many new faces who arejoining in the Rammy Boogie Bus. Weve had a request to spendsome of the funds on a drum, and have found our very own andvery keen Little Drummer Boy, so it should be making its debut
    tonight. Apologies if it drives everyone mad, but it could be worse- I have a big bag of them bloody Vuvuzela things in the cupboard
    under the stairs, and as we all remember, theres nowt spoils a worldcup like 60,000 people tooting on those!
    Billy Priestley at the final whistle- thats not his Happy Face
