Ossett
A former
student of
Ossett
School, Vikki
Batey worked
from the age
of 13 in an
Ossett based
salon and went on to attend Thomas Danby
College for 2 years, where she achieved levels 1
and 2 in hairdressing. She returned to college in
2006 to complete her level 3 qualification.
In May 2008, Vikki caught the travelling bug and
embarked on a round the world trip, hairdressing in
hostels throughout the world, including America,
Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Thailand,
Loas and India.
One of Vikki’s longer stays was in Melbourne,
Australia where she was very lucky to quickly find
herself hairdressing in an exclusive area of
Melbourne called Brighton. In the 5 months, she
spent in Melbourne, Vikki worked hard, partied
hard, lived life to the full and made some life long
friends. Her claim to fame from this time was that
she did the hair of Jason Donovan’s mum on the
night she was heading out with Olivia Newton
John. But then, she was used to rubbing
shoulders in the salon with famous Aussie
sportsmen and Neighbours stars!
If you ask Vikki how she spent her time on her
travels, other than hairdressing, the list she reels
off is amazing: snowboarding, climbing, caveing,
abseiling, trekking, bungy jumping, white water
rafting and elephant and camel treks.
Whilst travelling and risking life and limb with
extreme sports, Vikki realised that she wanted more
responsibility and would like to run her own
business. Although she was offered sponsorship to
stay in Australia, Ossett and Horbury beckoned and
on returning home she was offered a wonderful
opportunity to open her own salon in Horbury.
After a week of refurbishment, Victoria Hair is now
open for business. Vikki is keen to stress that it
wouldn’t have been possible without help from her
mum, dad and grandma. She added, “I would also
like to say a big Thank You to everyone who helped
with the refurbishment of the salon - it was an
intense week!”
There’s one thing for sure, with Vikki’s travelling
adventures, her clients will never be stuck for
interesting conversation in the salon!
Visit Vikki at her official opening day on the 15thAugust, where you will be offered a glass of bubblyand discounted bookings.Victoria Hair, 10 High Street, Horbury, Tel: 01924 277123

Has American footballtaken the local area bystorm?
For those who know little about American Football,Ossett School student, Matthew Clayton, explains alittle bit about this increasingly popular sport.
With the risingpopularity of theYorkshire Rams andeven Ossett Schoolparticipating in a non –
contact version of thesport, it’s starting to look like Gridiron has ahome here in Yorkshire.
How American Football is PlayedThe game is played by two teams of 11 playersand consists of 4 quarters, each of 15 minutes. The objective of the game is to advance downto field the score a touchdown; this is worth 6points (with 1 extra point if converted).
The NFL The NFL (National Football League) is theprofessional league for American football inthe United States; it consists of 32 teams. These teams are then split up into the NFC(National Football conference) and the AFC(American Football Conference), and then into8 regional divisions. After a full 16 gameregular season, the teams with the bestrecords progress through to the playoffs; withthe aim of playing in the Super Bowl and beingcrowned NFL Champions.
NFL in the U.KFrom 2007 the NFL has been staging a game inthe U.K each season. Both games to date havebeen played at the new Wembley Stadium inLondon. In the first game in 2007, 40,000tickets sold out within 90 minutes of release, giving an indication of just how popular thesport is in the UK.

BURGLAR ALARMS
Garden Magic have kindly offered advice onthe jobs to be done in the garden startingearly August.
Cut down early-flowering perennialsto encourage a second flush of colourRemove faded flowers on perennials such as
Lupins for example. Early pruning often
encourages a second flush of flowers late in
the season. Cut the
flower-spike down to
just above a new shoot
or leaf, and give each
plant a generous liquid
feed to encourage
fresh growth.
Prune basket flowers/container plants(stopping technique)Pinch out the growing tips of basket and
container plants like Chrysanthemums to
encourage them to produce bushy even
growth and more lovely flowers. Pinch out
shooting tips in July/early Aug latest.
Sow seeds & Plant out SummerBedding PlantsSow Biennials seeds like forget-me-nots,
foxgloves as soon as new fresh seed is
available. Finish planting out summer bedding
plants in borders,
baskets and containers,
making sure to help fill
any gaps with large
plants like, fuchsias or
pelargonium’s.
FruitcropsEnjoy the
fruits in your garden by now picking everyday
rhubarb, strawberries, raspberries, currants
and gooseberries. Remember to net fruit
bushes to keep birds away, but it is important
to check the netting
everyday to ensure that
no birds have become
trapped.
Fruit treesThe natural July drop
of fruit will have helped thin out a heavy fruit
crop, but it is worth lending a hand and
picking off any small, damaged or diseased
fruits so that remaining good fruit has at least
10cm (4in) apart to grow in August.
Pests and diseasesUse a forceful jet from a garden hose to
knock aphids off Buddleia (butterfly tree) and
other garden plants that attract “our little
friends”. Spray roses (spray in the morning) to
protect them against problems with mildew,
black-spot or rust.

Keeping Your ChildSafe in the Sun
There are three steps you can take to protect yourchild from the sun: shade, clothes and cream.SHADE This is the most important step. As far as possible, avoid being in the direct sun between 10am and4pm from April to September in the UK. Keepyour child in the shade if outside. CLOTHESThis is the second most important step. As far aspossible, wear loose-fitting, long-sleeved tops, longshorts or skirts and sunhats when out in the sun.Sunhats should ideally cover the ears and neck aswell as shade the face. For all children, darkcoloured clothes give more protection. Special UV-protective clothing is available. This is particularlyuseful for swimming out of doors or for the beach. CREAMThis is the third most important step and shouldnot be used in place of steps one and two. Put ahigh factor suncream (SPF 25 or higher) on theareas not covered by clothes. In particular, payattention to the nose and upper cheeks. If yourchild’s sunhat does not cover his or her neck, ears
and forehead, then cover those with cream too.Don’t forget to put suncream on your child’s feet ifhe or she is wearing sandals. Buy suncream thathas a high star rating (measured out of five stars)as this gives good protection against both UVA andUVB rays. Remember to use water-resistant creamsif swimming or sweating a lot, and to reapply anysuncream every few hours.
Remember that suncream alone does not giveenough protection against UV damage.
