Book v FilmCan a film ever be better than the book? When a great story is made into a film, can the film

ever better the book it was taken from or is the

written word king?

Many films have started life as books, the movie

rights being snapped up as soon as the

imagination of a savvy producer has been gripped.

But it takes skill and foresight to take transfer the

written word into a great film.

There isn’t a film that readily springs to mind as

being better than the original book it was taken

from, simply because good writing conveys so

much more emotion than can possibly be see on

screen. Film and TV is two dimensional compared

to a skilfully crafted piece of writing; feelings and

reactions have to be made clear to the viewer by

facial expression, tone of voice, body language

and the skill of the director in using the camera.

By reading a book, on the other hand, you are able

to totally absorb yourself in the characters withing

the tale. The author is able to take you inside the

characters’ worlds and as a reader you can feel

what the characters feel. Such is the power of the

human imagination.

In film, much is laid bare for the viewer, you see,

hear and experience exactly what the director

wants you to, so the film is the director’s version of

the book. With a well written book, you are lead

down a story pathway by the author, but much of

what is written is left to the reader’s imagination

and the readers’ own experiences, hopes, dreams

and fears come into play to help interpret the

words.

It does sometimes depend on whether you have

read the book or seen the film first and some films

have inspired many to go out and read the book,

but by and large the regardless of how good the

film version is, it always seems to be lacking

something.

In future issues, we’ll be looking at some great

books and films and asking the question,

“Can the film ever be better than the film?”

We’d like to hear from you if you know of a film

that exceeded your expectation after reading the

book, rather then leaving you rather disappointed.

David Aldred, owner of The Curtain Shop on

Kingsway, Ossett, began trading in October 2000,

making curtains and soft furnishing purely for the

trade. Already experienced in the soft furnishings

industry, David and two members of staff

concentrated on supplying 16 shops in the West

Yorkshire area.

The consistently high quality and reliable service,

ensured the sewing room soon expanded from two

members of staff to five. As all staff were local to

the Ossett and Horbury, and with a visible

presence at the bottom of Kingsway in Ossett, it

was inevitable that the reputation for quality

curtains and contemporary fabrics would spread. It

wasn’t long before David was being asked on a

regular basis to make up curtains for local

domestic customers.

Seizing the opportunity to provide a domestic

curtain making service to the local community,

David first opened The Curtain Shop in premises,

now occupied by Ossett Upholstery, behind the

current shop on Kingsway. Although continuing to

make for the trade, orders

from the domestic market

really took off and in

February 2004 The Curtain

Shop had to relocate to the current larger

premises. The Curtain Shop in Normanton town

centre opened shortly after in 2005 and in 2006 the

old premises to the rear of the Kingsway shop was

converted into premises for the newly formed

Ossett Upholstery which specialises in hand made

bespoke furniture and re-upholstering of existing

furniture.

A strong commitment to local loyalty has been a

large factor in the success of the The Curtain Shop

and Ossett Upholstery. All employees are from the

local area and as many materials as possible

sourced in the UK, Yorkshire where possible. All

linings and interlinings and the majority of the

poles are British made and the frames for Ossett

Upholstery are manufactured in Thornhill and the

foam sourced in Dewsbury.

Always focussing on providing a reliable, high

quality local service for local people has been a

winning formula for The Curtain Shop, seeing the

business grow from two to twenty two members of

staff in only eight years.

Offering a free measuring and design service and

a wide range of fabrics and styles to choose from,

the experienced team at The Curtain Shop are on

hand to give advice or to leave you to browse.

Visit the The Curtain Shop showroom on Kingsway

and see for yourself.

‘Mothering Sunday’ was originally the day when in

16th Century Christian practice one would make

an annual visit to one's mother church, which

meant that most mothers would be reunited with

their children on this day. Later it was the one day

a year when servants were allowed to visit their

families. In the UK it’s celebrated on the fourth

Sunday in Lent, but in the US and many other

countries, they have a fixed date, often the second

Sunday in May.

Whether it’s called Mother’s Day or Mothering

Sunday, most countries in the world have chosen

to celebrate motherhood every year, but it’s

becoming more and more commercialised and the

original sentiments forgotten. It is now largely a

secular festival, becoming one of the biggest

occasions for gift giving and card sending after

Christmas and one of the most popular days of the

year for eating out (so if you were thinking of

treating your mum ot a meal out, book early!)

According to the Flowers & Plants Association,

Mother's Day is the biggest event in the UK's cut

flower and indoor plant industry. At this time of year

the UK's sales of cut flowers and indoor plants

increase by an average of 40% on a normal day's

trading. The British Retail Consortium reckon that

around £45 million is spent on Mother’s Day cards

with around 30 million cards sent, and around £55

million is spent on chocolates, with around 4

million people buying a box for their Mum.

But it’s become all too easy to nip call into the

petrol station on the way to visiting your Mother to

pick up a card and bunch of cut flowers. Where

has the special occasion and thought disappeared

to?

We’re interested in finding out what our readers

feel would make the best Mother’s Day gesture.

As a mother, has any of your children ever

surprised you with an exceptionally thoughtful gift

or gesture? Or is there anything they could do that

would make you feel really appreciated?

As a child, have you ever pulled out all the stops

to give your mother something really special on

Mother’s Day, and what was her reaction?

Please let us know and we’ll include comments

and feedback in the next issue. In the meantime,

we’ve dug out some quotes that people have said

about motherhood. Do they strike a chord with

any of you readers?

Finding thePerfectProm DressWe’ve taken advice from the specialists to give yousome top tips to help you find your perfect PromDress

Start Looking EarlyDon’t leave it too late to start looking for your dress. Many dresses have to be ordered in your size andcould take up to 10 weeks to arrive. You may thenneed alterations to get a perfect fit, so leaving it ‘tilla couple of weeks before the prom is a big no-no!Also, you will need to bear in mind that many shopshave a policy of selling only one style in one colourto any one prom. This ensures that you will be theonly one at your prom with that dress, but it alsomeans that the early shoppers will have the bestpick. If your prom is in May or June, you shouldn’t beleaving it any later than March to order your dress, unless you are happy buying off-the-peg or want anend of line bargain from a previous season.

Consider Different Places toShopMany will head straight for the large departmentstores and shopping malls but there are often smalllocal retailers who can offer amazing dresses and agreat personal service. Consider specialistPromwear retailers, such as EyeCandy at Sandal orBridal shops such as Celebrations in Ossett, CottageBridals in Horbury and Domino Bridal in Batley. These retailers have a great deal of knowledge andexperience of styles and fabrics and can also offeradvice on accessories.

Keep an Open MindYou may well have some ideas of the style of dressyou prefer, but try not to have too much of a fixedidea of what you want. If you go to a specialist shop, such as a bridal shop or one specialising inPromwear, be prepared to take the advice of the

retailer and try on alternative styles. The retailershave seen hundreds of girls and women in differentstyles and colours and have a wealth of experienceof what suits particular body shapes, colouring andpersonalities.

Be YourselfThe Prom is an opportunity to dress in a way younever have before and to really put on the style.Remember that most are in the same boat and willbe wearing a style of dress that they have neverworn before, so push yourself out of your comfortzone and dress to impress! But don’t overdo it - toenjoy your Prom, you have to be comfortable in yourdress or you’ll spend the whole evening hiding away

Take Someone With You It’s useful to have someone with you whose opinionyou value and trust and who has your best interestat heart. Friends can often subconsciously put youoff a dress if they think it’s too similar to their ownor don’t want to be upstaged, so even with bestfriends tread carefully when looking for your dress.

Have a great Prom!

UKCHO is a recently formed umbrella organisation

for hypnotherapy practitioners in the UK, and its aim

is to promote professional regulation and to set

standards of ethics and training which ensure all

hypnotherapy practitioners are safe and competent to

practice, thus fulfilling the primary criterion of

protecting the public.

UKCHO has done this by establishing a code of

conduct, ethics and practice, setting national

standards and a common curriculum for

hypnotherapy training, and establishing the National

Register of Hypnotherapists. You may wish to check

that your chosen therapist is UKCHO registered,

ensuring that they have completed a high quality

course in hypnotherapy to national occupational

standards, and is bound by a professional code of

conduct, ethics and practice. You can do this at

www.ukcho.co.ukI hope you find this information helpful in

deciding which therapist to choose.

In my practice, I always advise clients that before

undertaking any kind of therapy they should check

the qualifications and training of the therapist. Any

reputable therapist will be happy for you to ask

KidspageWe’ve been asked on many occasions to bring

back the Kids Page in the Ossett & Horbury

Review, and so from the next issue we’re going to

include something from our younger readers each

month. But we need your help!

A Kids Page is no good written by adults. We

needs young readers to send in jokes, book

reviews, film reviews, photos, favourite pets,

favourite hobbies etc. Whatever you want to shout

about, we want to hear about. Let us know what

you want to include the Kids Page and we’ll try to

include it - games, puzzles, jokes, competitions,

reviews, drawings etc.

Write to us at Kids Page, Ossett & Horbury

[email protected] but make sure to

mark it as Kids Page, Ossett & Horbury Review

And don’t forget to include your name, address

and age on everything you send into us, and for

the younger children, ensure your parents are

happy for you to contact us.

Local man, Andrew Nattress is justifiably very pleased with

himself in reaching his target raising funds to buy a specially

adapted cycle which will enable him to do sponsored bike

rides to fundraise for his chosen charities:

• Motor Neurone Disease Society

• Candlelighters Childrens Cancer Charity

• Stepping Stones Appeal for the Spinal Injuries

Unit at Pinderfields Hospital

• Association for Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus

Andrew has expressed his thanks to all who have

supported him in his efforts to raise funds to buy

the specialist equipment he needs to start his

fundraising work. A Salsa night at Woodkirk

Valley Country Club

donated proceeds

and a donation of

£300 from Ossett

helped, as has the

support from the
