CROSS FORMATION The monthly newsletter of Holy Cross Lutheran Church November 2012 One of the things I love about Holy Cross is the number of baptisms that happen in our midst each year. Whenever I stand at our baptismal font during worship to baptize an infant, young person or adult into the faith, I am awe-struck by the connection between the sacrament of baptism and the ministry we do together. While baptism is one of Holy Cross’ most celebratory and impactful moments, the baptism itself is never the whole story. From my unique vantage point as pastor, I am privileged to know the many and varied stories that bring people to our font to receive the living water of new life and redemption. Stories of joy, struggle, faith, and hope. The Bible says the Baptism of Jesus caused Heaven to open. The Holy Spirit descended like a dove, and God's voice spoke for everyone to hear: "This is My Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased." (Matthew 3:16, 17) Baptism brings joy to Heaven ... and joy to our church. Baptism and all that it means is made possible in this place because you give in response to God's love for you. Our generous response to God's love, in turn, supports God's mission and ministry through this place. Thank you for responding to God's love through your tithes and offerings, time, and talents. Because you choose to imitate God's generosity through your giving, we are able to offer the gift of baptism to all who come seeking the waters of life. You make the difference! As we think back on the numerous baptisms, we give thanks this year for 25 years of ministry. One of the ways we are celebrating is through 4 anniversary parties. Let me encourage you with my promise that these are going to be great events, worthy of your time. I hope you’ll join us at one of our meals and celebrations. Pastor Tony

conversation around a faith topic or wherever the conversation leads.

The mission of Marty’s Mug is to “Connect young adults in meaningful conversatio

In the process, young adults are able to reconnect with a faith community

Calling all crafters: The annual Holy Cross Craft Fair is back!On Saturday, November 17th, we will be having a Craft Fair from 8am–3pm.

If you would like to display your crafts, you are invited to for $35 (if you bring your own table) or $40 if you use a Holy Cross table.

For more information, contact Pastor Amy or any of the members of the Youth Team!

For those of you I have not had the opportunity to meet, my name is Rhonda Haglund and I am blessed to be your new Director of Children’s education. I happen to be married to Pastor Tony and together we have 3 children, Elizabeth (23) and twin boys, Justin and Sam who will be turning 20 in December. We have twodogs that fill our empty nest, you may see them hanging out at church on occasion at least until we sell ourhouse in Canton.I have only been at Holy Cross a short time but am already feeling at home thanks to the hospitality of your

great staff and the welcoming embrace of the congregation. Your children are delightful and I have been having a blast helping them discover some of the stories from the Old Testament. Next we will be diving intoKing Solomon as together we learn about the value of wisdom and the importance of “church.”With the help of two amazing Augustana senior students (Brooke Dejong and Alyssa Weber) we are able

to prepare the lessons down to the most minor detail. All the prep work these gals do allows the teachers the time and energy it takes to reinforce the story on a more personal level. Years from now they may not remember the specifics from their Sunday/Wednesday school time but hopefully they will remember the stories and the loving relationships they had the opportunity to experience. My prayer is that education for our children would continue to be a value for all members, we are not only

showing God’s love and grace to these little ones, but our mission needs to be bigger as we embrace and carefor their whole family system. It takes a village to raise a child and we need YOUR help. Some of my mostmemorable moments in my early years of raising our children were words of advice or acts of love from older

members of our congregation. We still need shepherds, part time teachers and substitutes. It is important work we do but it is also not rocket science. The only requirement is a lovefor children and a love for the Lord… if God is pulling at your heart strings, please give me a call and I can help you with all the tools you will need!I am looking forward to getting to know all of you and would love to visit,

my office door is always open and you can also reach me by email [email protected] or by phone 605-216-3368.It’s a great day to be a child of God!!

9th Graders had fun at the Confirmation Retreat – making stoles, talking about the gifts they have been given,

and working through their faith statements.Congratulations to all the 9th Graders

that were confirmed this month:

Hospital Visitation: A Caring PresenceHave you ever wondered how the church knows that you are hospitalized? When you are admitted to the hospital, you are asked about your church affiliation. Daily, a member of the hospital visitationteam calls the hospitals for a listing of people from Holy Cross. As long as “Holy Cross” is listed as yourchurch and you agree at the time of admission to sharing your name, the caller is made aware of yourpresence. Because you are in need of healing and rest, visits are brief, but provide the opportunity foryou to know you are cared about during this time. Members of the visitation team include: Katie Harms,Julie Thomas, Dixie Buffington, Joan Noerenberg, Karen Hattervig, Pastor Tony, Pastor Amy and Angie Smith. If you have prior knowledge of a hospitalization and/or would like a visit prior to surgery, please contact Angie Smith at the church or 310-3471.

Prayers of the People.During worship, we provide an opportunity to share concerns as a community of faith and lift them to

God. At the 8:00 worship, the names of those listed in the Crosswalk are read aloud. The other worshipservices provide opportunities for you within the prayer petitions to silently reflect upon and name those inneed. You are encouraged to take home the Crosswalk 24/7 and pray for those listed on the “Fridge Flyer”insert. As a community of faith, we hold one another in prayer. If you wish to share a prayer request for either orboth the Prayers of the Church or the Circle of Prayer, simply write your requests on the prayer cards in thepews. If your request for the Prayers of the Church is for someone other than yourself, please write yourname and phone number. The Circle of Prayer is a group of individuals who receive an email and agree toconfidentially hold in prayer the names of those in need. Prayer requests may also be called into the churchoffice or emailed to one of the pastors or to Angie.

Hy-Vee Card FundraiserEach fall the preschool students/families are asked to sell Hy-Vee cards. The preschool uses Hy-Vee

card sales to purchase larger classroom furniture and outdoor equipment to meet our program and curriculum needs. The preschool designates funds according to current needs. Since last spring thepreschool has been working hard towards creating an inviting outdoor discovery center for the childrento explore and move about developing skills on the North end of the building by using money raisedthrough Hy-Vee cards. The amount of money sold in the month of September from preschool families and members is simply

once again astonishing! In 2010 the preschool students sold $14,000, 2011 they sold $19,950 and thisyear they students met a new record of $30,850 making the 5% profit for the Preschool $1,541.25…WOW!!!!Thank you for your support!!!!

Playground UpdateThis year because of the Hy-Vee card fundraiser and money we have raised over the past few years selling Hy-Vee cards during the Fall fundraiser and throughout the year, we have been able to make the playground possible! This would not have been possible without the help and support of preschoolfamily and friends and you, the members and guest of Holy Cross… THANK YOU!!The preschool was able to fund 100% of the total $26,000 to complete the work. (Work included:

building up ground area by hauling in dirt and grading area, moving large garage door to the Northside to allow easier access from parking lot and sidewalk, chain link fence, sod inside playground areaand outside along fence and garage, underground sprinkler system, woodchips to create a safe zoneunder equipment, edging, sidewalks -both leading to the playground and inside theplayground for a barrier for thesandbox and area for sidewalkgames, sand, and large commercialgrade equipment.)

Need a chance to breathe?Out of breath from all that you have going on?

Join us for our Advent Midweek services on Wednesdays starting November 28th.

Our theme this year is “Breathless” based on the quote: “There is no season more breathless –

it is also the season on which we hope to find breath.”Come and join us for some delicious soup (served from 5:00-6:45 pm)

and then for worship (7:00 pm), where we will experience Holden Evening Prayer, and explore what it means to be breathless and to be given new breath through the Advent story.

All ages are welcome to join us!Blessings on your Advent journey!
