I see in the snowfall some lessons of life. It’s somewhat of a relief to realize that our drought may be broken by this small but recognizable winter event. We understand droughts, personal and spiritual droughts. Sometimes they stretch out too far. Our souls become parched and weak, and we lose sight of our God. Life seems flat. But then God’s grace breaks through – from a word, a memory, a friend, or a song. And the drought in our soul is ended, bringing a fresh, new burst of hope. What with the poor care I gave my lawn last summer and fall, and the wild antics of my labrador retriever, my backyard was looking pretty threadbare, especially compared to the well-manicured lawns of my diligent neighbors. But now our lawns look the same, all pristine and white. Isn’t it just that way with forgiveness too? Be our sins large or small, compared with others, we are all made clean through the love of Christ. Sunday School Sunday School Offering Money...Offering Money...is now helping children in Cameroon.

“In Africa, the difference between life and death is an education.”

~ Bishop David Zellmer ~

Note: Although no longer working for ELCA Global Missions, Dr. Jim & Carolyn Brown continue their calling to train physicians in surgery at theMbingo Baptist Hospital in Cameroon. Please continue to hold them up in prayer.

The SD Synod is in relationship with a companion synod in Cameroon that supports the education of children through the “Train Up A Child” program.

Here is how it works: One-half of the Sunday School offerings

will be sent to the SD Synod. The offering dollars are then sent to school children who would not otherwise receive an education.

(Just $15 from Holy Cross – matched by $15 from the child’s parents –

allows 1 more child in Cameroon to attend primary school through the Evangelical Church in Cameroon.)Thank you for sharing your gifts with others.

Stop by the Sunday School bulletin board to see a picture of just afew of the children whose lives have been touched by this program.

“I want to sing where it matters; to have a chance to sing about the lives of people and play in the hearts of those who want (need)connection. It’s not performing as much as swinging open the door and letting in the breeze. Troubadours only seek someone’s ear. But when it’s more than entertainment, the dream comes ’round.” – James Hersch

“Soup for the Soul”Soup is a wonderful way to show that one is cared for and thought of

as it feeds both the body and soul. On Saturday, February 18, you are invited to come and make soup (or bring prepared soup)

to share with members and friends of Holy Cross. The soup will be delivered that day. Here is how you can help:

If you can help in any of these ways, please sign up at the kiosk. If you have suggestions of people who would enjoy the gift of homemade soup,

please email or call Angie as soon as possible.

If you or a loved one is hospitalized – in any of the local hospitals – please contact the office.

If you would like a visit from one of the pastors, be sure to inform

the church office staff when you call.(In addition, members of the Visitation Team

are available Monday–Friday.)Please be sure that “Holy Cross” is listed

in your patient information so that when phone calls are made to the hospitals,

the Visitation Team member(s) will know that you have been hospitalized.

““Circle of PrayerCircle of Prayer””““Prayers of the ChurchPrayers of the Church””

If you have a prayer request that you wish to be shared with the confidential “Circle of Prayer” or lifted up in the weekend’s “Prayers of the Church,” simply fill out a Prayer Request card located in the pews or call/email Angie Smith at the church office.

A L e n t e n D e v o t i o n a l — Wr i t t e n b y Y o u !

You may recall that during the “Now Is the Time!” campaign, a devotional was created by you, the membersand friends of Holy Cross. As a way to reflect and pause during Lent, I am creating a similar tool for the season ofLent; and I’m asking for your help.

This year’s Lenten theme is: “Who Do You Say that I Am?” Think of the names we call Christ: Rabbi, friend,King of kings, Emmanuel, Master, Servant. Think of the ways you have encountered Christ – both in times of joyand in times of sorrow. What name do you give to Christ?

You are invited to:

1. Reflect on the theme, “Who Do You Say that I Am?”2. Select a Bible verse(s).3. Write a brief devotion (similar in length to God Pause).4. Close with a short prayer.

Your reflections, along with others, will be shared via email (in no particular order) with the members and friendsof Holy Cross during Lent (starting Ash Wednesday, February 22nd through Good Friday, April 6th). In addition,a limited number of printed copies will be available for those who do not have access to email.

If you know that you are willing to participate, call or email me immediately; and I will be in contact with you.If you have questions, please feel free to contact me as soon as possible. Please, do not let the theme in any wayintimidate or discourage you from sharing your story; it simply provides a guideline as to how you may have encountered Christ in this way.

In Christ’s Care, Angie Smith
