ASSUMPTION ACADEMY 2021 News

Veterans Day is a very special day here at Assumption Academy

because the children are introduced to real super heroes.

Conor’s dad who has served in the Marines for over 20 years, came to

school to teach Mrs. Rizzo’s class all about his life as a Marine. Mrs D’s

class made special poppies with photos of the service men & women

in the lives of the children in her class. You don’t have to be an Avenger or

have supernatural powers to be a hero—you just need to be BWAVE

(as the kids would say).

Have you heard?

It’s time for Friends & Family registration for the 2022/2023 school year.

OLA Parishioners can get in on this deal. Register now before registration opens to

the public. Visit:

https://assumption.academy/ today and click on the APPLY button

before classes fill up.

Pastor’s Corner

Dear Friends, This weekend, OLA welcomes Mr. Daniel Monastra, a collegiate seminarian at St. Charles

Borromeo Seminary to speak at all of our Masses regarding the Annual Seminary Appeal. Daniel’s presence here will provide a more “personal touch” to this important appeal. I thank you in advance for welcoming him and for your ongoing support of our Seminary. Please pray for an increase in vocations and keep Daniel & all of our seminarians in your prayers. It seems hard to believe that this coming Thursday will be Thanksgiving Day. As customary, we will celebrate our annual Thanksgiving Day Mass at 9 AM.. As customary, you are most welcome to bring any food that will be used at your table at home to be blessed at this Mass. Likewise, we will be distributing blessed bread (with a prayer) so that you can take it home with you. In addition, a Cornucopia will be displayed in the church and following Mass, all will be invited to come forward and take something home to share with your family. In all of these gestures, we show forth an intimate connection between the “parish church” and your home, the “domestic church.” I hope and pray that with whatever plans you have made for Thanksgiving this year, your day will be truly special and blessed! We thank all of the Ladies of Our Lady of the Assumption for their hard work organizing our Christmas Bazaar. It was a huge success and our profit this year was $9,000, which far surpassed last year’s profit by at least $3,000. Thanks again to all and I am so grateful! Our Annual Appeal began last month in which we mailed out 906 letters to all of our registered fami-lies. As of this date we have received 107 in return and have raised a total of $39,150. I thank all of those who have already responded so generously to this year’s appeal. If you have not returned your contribution as of yet, I invite you to do so. I will keep you posted as to our progress in the coming weeks. Once again, I offer heart-felt thanks to all of you for doing whatever you can, within your means, to support OLA. Thank you! This Sunday is the last Sunday of the Church’s liturgical year and next Sunday we will begin a brand new liturgical year. We have decided to begin this “new year” by re-instating the presentation of the gifts of bread and wine at Mass. As you know, this practice was discontinued with the pandemic, however at this time it seems safe to resume it. In addition, there will be a change as to how the collections are taken up at Mass. When there are 2 collections, one will simply follow the other during the Offertory rather than having one after Communion time. I thank you for your patience as we institute these changes in the coming liturgical year. On this final Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King. In today’s gospel, we hear one of two conversations between Jesus and Pilate. Pilate questions Jesus about the charges brought against him. In his responses to Pilate’s questions, Jesus distinguishes his kingdom from the political powers of this world. Jesus is king, but not the kind of king we imagine or expect. He was certainly not the kind of king Pilate feared he might be. His kingship is one of being a servant and ultimately giving his life on the cross so that we might live and be saved. Today’s Gospel invites us to see with eyes of faith that we might recognize that Jesus, through his crucifixion and death, is indeed king and Savior of all. Soon we will conclude the Year of St. Joseph. On Tuesday, November 30th we will welcome Fr. Eric Banniker to give an Advent Reflection on St. Joseph as the “dreamer”. This will be a fitting conclusion to this year and a wonderful way to celebrate the season of Advent. Please plan on attending this spiritual talk in the Sacred Heart Chapel at 7 PM. This week we conclude our series on the 7 new invocations that have now been added to the Litany of St. Joseph by Pope Francis. This week’s invocation is:

Patron of the Poor (Patrone Pauperum)

This has been a consistent theme of Pope Francis, that the poor are never forgotten. From the beginning of his pontificate, Pope Francis has said that he wants “a poor Church, for the poor”. On one hand, what he is advocating is that people of faith shun unhealthy attachments to earthly possessions in favor of a profound trust in the Lord as the only source of salvation and true happiness. But for the financially and materially poor, Pope Francis is also saying they have a father in St. Joseph. After all, St. Joseph was the earthly father to the Heavenly King who was born in a manger. St. Joseph understands material poverty! Likewise, he shows the rewards of having profound trust in the Lord. Through St. Joseph, the poor can discover the joy in being blessed with the riches of salvation. Love and prayers, Fr. Carey
