editorial >> Dear Ladies and Gentleman,

after nearly four years of education at the University of Applied Sciences we are facing our diploma degree. Our little toolbox which we had at the beginning of our studies is nearly overloaded, due to the unique project “Formula Student”. joanneum racing graz took place in four competitions with the jr13 and was very successful. It was not only the best season ever in the history of joanneum racing graz, but we also gathered best Austrian „Formula Student“ team at all competitions we participated in. I want to thank all my colleagues for tireless dedication and for doing a lot of night shifts, which allowed us to have such a gorgeous success.

Being motivated by the exciting results in the season 2013 we decided to further develop the jr13 to become first. Due to the change of the curriculum to the Bachelor and Master system it would not have been possible to develop, design and build a completely new jr race car in 2014. The team of the jr13evo consists out of motivated students from the former jr13 team and students who are going to develop the jr15 in conceivable time. One of our biggest milestones is already completed. It was an outrageous

show, when the jr13 was revealed and presented to the public for the first time. As mentioned in the slogan „ After the RollOut is before the RollOut! “the whole crew did not rest and started working on the car directly after. In the next few weeks we are facing a lot of work. The competition in Michigan (USA) is moving closer and we are going to the test facilities, equipped with a lot of tools, test- and data recording equipment. Besides all the different technical tests we have to find the perfect setup for the different dynamic events.

In the name of joanneum racing graz I want to thank all sponsors, manufacturers and suppliers, who guarantee our progress and who also fulfill some special wishes. The whole team is very excited to see the jr13evo in action, not only at the testing track, but also at the upcoming competitions in Michigan (USA) and Silverstone (GB), which we will attend.

Looking forward to the ongoing project and the upcoming diploma thesis I hope that we will continue working as hard as we did in past to reach our goals – the diploma degree and reaching first place at the competitions. Have fun reading our newsletter!

formula student

We are building our cars with passion, but definetly not just for fun. Our masterpieces aren‘t supposed to just look pretty in the garage. We also want them to succeed in international competition, we want to see what they are capable of. These are just some of the reasons why we compete every year with other construction teams in an international engeneering competition – The Formula Student.

Joining The Formula Student is not just about to find out which team built the fastest car. There are different disciplines, different technical and economical categories, in which a team can achive the best result. The team with the best score wins the overall ranking.

In season 2013 we managed to become no.13 of 513 teams in the world ranking and had been allowed to call ourselves the best austrian team.

This year we are facing a very special challenge: first time since 2011 joanneum racing graz is going to start again where the Formula Student began its roots, in the United States of America. Across the pond is waiting a contest, competing against the 119 best teams from all over the world. Our goal: to become No.1 of the overall ranking!

The competition in Silverstone is almost considered as one of the traditions of the joanneum racing. Our jr13evo is going to fight his very last race and shows one last time what he is really hiding under his carbon fibre shell. Our team is looking foward to good results and a lot of fun joining in probably the most spectacular race in the Formula Student.

old and new

Due to the changeover from Diploma to Bachelor studies there had been some adjustments in the curriculum at the FH JOANNEUM. According to these changes it was not possible in this current season of 2014 to construct a completely new racing car. Therefore we decided to use the jr13, which enabled us our most successful season until now. We improved several parts. The strengths had been built on and we have tried to eliminate the weaknesses. In accordance to the guideline of the Formula Student however it is only permitted for 365 days to join the competitions with the same racing car. On these grounds our jr13evo - which is considered as a development and not as a new car - is going to start in this season in Michigan (USA) and Silverstone (UK) Since these competitions are still in the 365 days after the first start in Hockenheim.

suspension

Our declared goal for the evolution of the jr13 was of course to make it faster on the track. More concretely, we wanted

to radicalize its agility and maneuverability and adjust it to the modified aerodynamics. For this reason not only fine tuning has been done. We tuned the suspension kinematics fundamentally.

Among other things, the wheelbase was shortened and the steering was reworked to be faster at the corner entry and exit. Furthermore the suspension became bone

hard to keep the ride height as low as possible and not to hit the ground with the enhanced downforce of the new aerodynamics.

The experiences which we have acquired during our last season, helped us especially in the fine-tuning of the more complex parameters like roll centers and scrub radius.

We are proud, that we were able to present you the fastest car in th history of joanneum racing graz at the RollOut of the jr13evo.A very hard challenge was the interaction with the other packages.

With a lot of test days the suspension will get the best adjustement with the new driving dynamics, to have the best handling in all competitions and to leave the other competitors behind.

report For the project Michigan the workload for the calculation

team did not decrease. It started with the STRUCUTRAL EQUIVALENCY SPREADSHEET (SES) which forces the team to prove safety relevant parts and continued with the stress analysis of several new designed parts. As in the past the FE-program Abaqus was used to calculate these parts. The licenses were again sponsored by SIMULIA. Some engine components were designed new to reduce their weight and therefore a new stress analysis was needed.

A big challenge was to figure out where are the critical points of the Monocoque, therefore the whole chassis build-up was modelled in Abaqus and considered the new aerodynamic-packet and a correct application of the dynamic forces.Because of the failure of a wheel hub, a new one was designed and analysed before the production process started.

The upcoming calculation team for next year‘s season was also trained in the FE-program in a course which was sponsored by SIMULIA in December 2013. With the new knowledge the new team members were able to support the actual calculation team. For the season 2014/15 first concepts were already investigated to compare and discuss them.

Let’s go! Finally we are ready to race. After a lot of long nights in the laboratory we are ready to start our new jr13evo. Along

the lines of “beat the limits” we could even improve the very successful jr13 to an even better car, the jr13evo. We are very proud to present the new racer with a lot of new features.

The brand new lap timer informs the driver about the pace via steering wheel. Continual improvement of our electro pneumatic shift system allows us to change gears in a few

milliseconds. Up to 70 sensors in the car keep the racing engineer up to date. The weight of the car is very important, therefore we kept an eye on every component to make it as light as possible.

The probably strongest Formula Student combustion engine was built by us in the last year. But that’s not enough! The engine will be improved in terms of efficiency, drivability and performance by further development on the engine test bench.

chassis

The main material the chassis team has to deal with is carbon fibre which is much lighter than steel, even though its strength

is higher. Because of that we can produce a monocoque – a structural skin – that weights under 20 kg (44 lb). The monocoque is the most important and complex part of the chassis team. All forces that act onto our race car have to be absorbed by the

monocoque and to be spread over thin layers of carbon fibre. It took seven weeks and about eight team members to produce the monocoque at Mubea Carbo Tech in Salzburg, Austria.

We have also improved the aerodynamic of our racing car. The aerodynamic devices have been enlarged and the process of manufacturing revised. Though we doubled the profiles of the wings we could maintain the total weight of jr13evo. Because the average speed at the different events is rather low, we need larger profiles to provide enough downforce at slow curves.

Additionally we worked at the crashbox, the pedalbox, the steering wheel, the cockpit and the design of our jr13evo.

The third season in use you might think our engine is a little outdated - wrong! There is a lot going on this year in the

powertrain. The main task is once more weight reduction and an improved performance. With new pistons and an advances combustion chamber geometry the last power is mobilized on our engine test bench.

The great power output made it necessary to overhaul the engines whole cooling system. So for the jr13evo a custom made watercooler was designed and produced. Also the lubrication system was adapted to the new requirements and with the self-designed and self-made carbonfiber oiltank a lot of weight was saved too.

Particular attention was paid to the fuel consumption because an improved fuel economy will be awarded with crucial points at the efficiency ranking at the events.

In conclusion our engine will be lighter, stronger and more efficient than ever. This should bring us the big advantage at the oncoming events.

Four months of planning, calculating and testing. For four months blood,

sweat and tears were shed. But we never lost sight of our goal: the 7th of March. The day, when the new jr13evo will be revealed and introduced to the public.

Like every year the team of joanneum racing graz organized another spectacular RollOut this year. The lecture hall of the University of Applied Sciences Graz served as the location for the revealing of the new racing car.

About 300 people did not want to miss out on the party and gathered in the Audimax in the evening of March 7th and were excitedly looking forward to the revelation. We were also able to welcome numerous sponsors, who support us year by year.

For those who could not be there in person, we offered a livestream on our homepage www.joanneum-racing.at. About 150 people made use of this stream, thereunder Teamleader Daniel Maier who was absent due to an illness. DJ Fred Astair made sure everybody enjoyed the evening.

Sandra Suppan, „Journalism and PR“- student and member of the PR-team of joanneum racing graz, led through the evening, which began with laughter, as the rector of the University of Applied Sciences Graz, Karl Peter Pfeiffer, directs his opening words to the audience. He comforts the present local competitors from TU Graz Racing and said, “...it would be no shame to finish behind joanneum racing graz at the races.”

Head of Department Kurt Steiner and Michael Trzesniowski, who supervises joanneum racing graz, were proud. They are happy, because so many people from different departments worked so well together in the team.

Also, Co-Teamleader Philipp Eder and Technical Director Martin Schwarz were proud and happy, when they finally could reveal their jr13evo.

Unlike his predecessors, the jr13evo is not completely new, but an upgrade of the jr13 from last year. It wins over with improved aerodynamics, almost double-sized front wing and tail plane, better electrics and an innovative engine.

After the first competition in Germany in July 2013 we had the feeling that

we would run into a successful season with our jr13. We should stay true to our thoughts and after great results in all competitions we finished our season 2013 according to the world ranking list as No. 13.

Due to our forerunners and their success we knew already that several jr-racing cars joined the race in Michigan and it is indeed reasonable to denote it is a dream: to be able to compete with your own vehicle and your acquired knowledged with Fomula Student teams from all over the world, in the USA.

After the team was formed for the jr13evo, it was about the organisation for joining the competition in Michigan, USA. Such a competition, of course, comes along with plenty of organisation requirements. Also from the financial point of view it was necessary to capture resources which are almost equal to the cost of a whole season. At this juncture joanneum racing graz wants to thank all the sponsores, which made it possible, to present the result of our hard work in America.

In advance we had to register for the competition. The application was opened on 10/07/2013 by 4 p.m.. The registration was a pure thrill, because after nine minutes we were just able to secure the 112th place of a total of 120 starting positions.

The competition takes place from 14th – 17th May at Michigan International Speedway. The jr13evo is made ready for transport in mid-April, for which a separate crate must be built, customs documents are required. In addition, we started to look for a partner university which receives us during the time before the competition and to make use of their workshops, as well as testing facilities. At this point we would like to thank the students from the race team MRacing of the University Michigan. Thank you for your hospitality and support.

The jr13evo takes its flight on 04/16/2014 to the U.S. and the team will follow jr13evo on the 05/05/2014, departing at 6 a.m. in Graz. We look forward to this adventure on which we represent Austria as a single team and will give our best to achieve a top ranking.
