Customer Profile

Founded in 1808, Mount St. Mary’s University is the second-

oldest Catholic university in America. Grounded in the liberal

arts, the university weaves Catholic identity throughout the

campus community with students experiencing the intersection

of faith and culture through rigorous academics.

The university also offers students the opportunity to get

involved in 19 Division 1 athletic teams and more than 80 clubs

and intramural activities.

The Challenge

In 2007, Mount St. Mary’s University President Thomas H.

Powell signed the American College & University President’s

Climate Change Commitment (ACUPCC), pledging to reduce

the greenhouse gas emissions of the university and ultimately

become “carbon neutral.” And two years later, the state of

Maryland announced Generating Clean Horizons, an initiative

to jumpstart renewable energy projects throughout the state.

So, how did the University plan to reduce their greenhouse

gas emissions?

The Solution

After careful consideration, Constellation decided to

participate in the Generating Clean Horizons initiative

and proposed the development and construction of a

new solar farm in Emmitsburg, MD. Mount St. Mary’s

University’s 1,400 acres of open land provided the

ideal location that would also allow for an expanded

project to serve Mount St. Mary’s exclusively. First

Solar, a manufacturer of solar photovoltaic (PV)

power systems, provided engineering, procurement

and construction services for the project. Union electric

and Baja Construction performed the construction work

for the solar covered carports.

The Results

Under a 20-year power purchase agreement, the renewable

energy produced by the solar farm—one of Maryland’s

largest solar photovoltaic power farms—is bought by the

University System of Maryland, Maryland Department of

General Services and Mount St. Mary’s University. 16.1 MW

is used by the state of Maryland while the remaining 1.3 MW

of power goes to the University, primarily Mount St. Mary’s

PNC Sports Complex. Constellation leases 100 of 1,400 acres

from the university on its east campus.
