Transcript of the "1832 Census of Negroes" for St. Mary's County. This was a census of freed persons of color living in Maryland. The purpose of this census was to find volunteers for removal of freed persons of color to Liberia in Africa by the Maryland Colonization Society. The efforts of the society were greatly encouraged and given an urgent status after Nat Turner's Rebellion of 1831 in nearby Virginia. The census was conducted by sheriffs, and provided for by legislation. It was not stored with any state papers of Maryland, and was discovered within the papers of the Maryland Colonization Society at the Maryland Historical Society, with the Maryland State Archives then microfilming the papers of the society and making it available on their website. There was not a standard format for this census, and it varies by County. Unfortunately, the males were listed separately than the females in St. Mary's County. The names are also grouped alphabetically, by the first letter of the surname. Transcribed by Madeline Rivard, as part of the final project for MUST 390 , Introduction to Archives and Information Science, St. Mary's College of Maryland. Transcription corrected and annotated by Kent Randell, College Archivist, St. Mary's College of Maryland. Males are listed alongside females, with obvious families being given a blue background. Entries with a purple background indicates that other sources were used to group this family together. Abbreviations: CoF (Certificate of Freedom), OC (Orphans Court), AKC (Agnes Kane Callum, Black Marriages of St. Mary's County, 1800-1900), Fresco (Margaret Fresco, Births and Marriages of St. Mary's County, 1634-1900), emig.
