This has been exciting semester for the Richard J. Bolte, Sr. School of Business, and I am pleased to report to you some of the great work we are doing. As I begin my first academic year as Dean, I am extremely honored to lead our world-class team of faculty and staff. There is much to look forward to — including the development of new programs, welcoming new faculty, and offering a bold new vision for the School. This fall we hosted the university’s first semester-long Fulbright Scholar, we implemented two new programs in Logistics and Government Contracting, and we developed a new Executive- in-Residence program. Best of all, our faculty continue their excellent work — in teaching, scholarship, and serving their professions. Being a member of the Bolte School is exciting for many reasons. Our talented and motivated students are not only preparing for a professional career, but they are acquiring the skills to advance to higher levels of responsibility. Our faculty transform students’ lives each day — guiding their approach to problem solving … inspiring them to become entrepreneurial thinkers … and shaping them into confident, ethical leaders solving the challenges of a global society. I am grateful for your generous support of the Bolte School. Thank you for being part of our great endeavor! Karl W. Grant Creates New Student Research Fellowships

Two Mount seniors are spending the year doing advanced research work in economics, thanks to a grant from the Charles Koch Foundation.Students David Nixdorf, C’13 and Scott Varga, C’13, are helping associate professor of economics John Larrivee with his research on how economic systems affect people. The students are reviewing the work of economists and philosophers whose vision shaped the alternative economic regimes of the 20th century, and are studying what actually happened in the Soviet Union, Poland, Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Germany, Italy and China. In addition, Scott is also focusing on theoretical writings, given his political science background, and is studying several works by the Soviet Communist Party, including Fundamentals of Political Science, and The Fundamentals of Marxist-Leninist Philosophy. He is also reviewing academic studies focusing on personal accounts of life in these countries.

“The grant certainly supports scholarship in the Bolte School and is enriching student learning opportunities,” said Dr. Larrivee.

Boyds CEO to Teach Entrepreneurship

Gary Lowenthal, co-founder and former CEO of The Boyds Collection Ltd., will join the Bolte School of Business faculty this spring, teaching a class on entrepreneurship. Lowenthal spent two days on campus this fall as the School’s inaugural Executive-in-Residence, speaking to students about his experience building one of the country’s most successful gift and decorative accessory businesses. In the spring,, Professor Lowenthal’s course will center on his “Ten Secrets of Entrepreneurship,” which is the topic of an upcoming book. The course will explore the many dimensions of new venture creation and will encourage students to think of the best way to bring an idea for a business to successful fruition. Lowenthal has experience doing just that — in the late-1970s, he and his wife started a small antiques store in Boyds, Maryland. Over the next 20 years he guided the business into a gift and decorative accessory market and built the company into one of the most creative and financially successful giants in the industry. In 1998, The Boyds Collection Ltd., went public on the New York Stock Exchange with a market capitalization in excess of a billion dollars.

New Logistics Program and Government Contracting Classes Begin

The Bolte School continues to expand its program and course offerings at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Logistics and Supply Chain Management, the newest graduate level certificate program, began this fall. Students learn the complex challenges and specialized knowledge required to succeed in the rapidly growing field of logistics. The new program is a tribute to the late Richard J. Bolte, Sr., the founder of BDP International, a global logistics and transportation company. Offered at the Mount’s Frederick campus, students may complete the five-course certificate program, or apply the credits toward an MBA degree.

The Bolte School also offers two new undergraduate level courses focusing on defense acquisition. The courses are the result of a new relationship with the Defense Acquisition University, the premiere certification authority for professionals working in government contracting. The two accredited classes fulfill the first step in DAU’s Level I certification.

Mount Students Discuss International Marketing With Top Hershey Executives

By Prof. Olga ShabalinaStudents in the International Marketing class made a trip to Hershey headquarters this fall to discuss their case decisions with two of the Hershey Corporation’s top executives — Diego Isaza, global brand director of Hershey’s & Reese’s, and Beata Chojnowska, general manager of Hershey International in Eastern Europe and Russia. The opportunity to discuss case decisions with real participants of Hershey’s global expansion was inspiring and rewarding.

The meeting began with Isaza’s overview of Hershey’s global expansion strategy, and switched to a discussion of the case key question: “Did the company miss an opportunity in the Russia market by leaving it in mid-90s, or was it a timely withdrawal?” The answer was obvious … the company, with a great philanthropic legacy and time-tested traditions of social responsibility, couldn’t stand the high level of corruption which existed in Russia at that time. The same principles lie at the core of the company’s corporate philosophy globally: take care of your people, give to live, consider your life as your legacy.

Students compared Hershey’s current marketing strategy in Russia with their own views. To their credit, most of their product and brand decisions coincided with Hershey’s current choice — Hershey’s Kisses and Hershey’s Bliss. Student Brian Wood argued for his team’s product

choice — genuine chocolate syrup. He convinced global executives of this segment attractiveness for Hershey in the long run. Among other marketing decisions, packaging and brand names were discussed, and again, most students’ decisions coincided with Hershey’s.

No less interesting was Chojnowska’s discussion of chocolate consumption in Russia. The students strengthened their understanding of Russian consumer behavior and made new discoveries. In Russia, people consider chocolate a staple, while in the United States consumers are more puritanical about chocolate consumption. Another striking discovery was that low-income consumers are not brand sensitive at all, with taste preference and price coming first when making purchase decisions.

The case discussion lasted more than two hours and continued afterwards on the way home. The students were satisfied with first-hand information and invaluable feedback they got from the leading company in the U.S. chocolate market. The students were also thankful to the Bolte School of Business for a lifetime opportunity to discuss global marketing strategies with top executives.

Dr. Flynn works with Trinitarian Sisters in Philadelphia

In 1997, the Trinitarian Sisters of Philadelphia created the Inn Dwelling Program empowering the most marginalized families and children to “begin the journey to self-sufficiency, social responsibility and upward mobility” under the leadership of Sr. Rosemarie Jefferson. Through a web of education, socialization, affordable housing, and career development programs, young people learn how to maximize their potential and find ways to contribute to society in meaningful ways.

This summer, Dr. Patrice Flynn led a spirited group of teens in a workshop on Catholic business ethics as part of an academic summer enrichment program on Ethics and Leadership. Eager to learn about the world of business, these bright students fully engaged in the practice of discovery about global capitalism and money, which was enlivening for all and a reminder of the power of education in community!
