Last week, I was shown around the Clifton Road home of Jo andSeb Royle – latest winners of the prestigious Montpelier &Clifton Hill Association Conservation Award Plate.
Clifton Road was developed from around 1830 and features a varietyof styles; two white stucco villas on the southern end stand out inparticular. One of these, No. 28, was bought by the Royles in January2012 and found to be in a rather poor state; evidenced by a cushionwhich had been nailed over one of the lower windows as security.
No time was wasted in employing Felce & Guy Architects to prepareplans for the refurbishment. Although the house dates from around1860, it does appear to have undergone something of a transformationduring Edwardian times whichincluded the addition of Arts &Crafts stained-glass windowsthroughout, and an extra bay atground and first floor levels (but notat basement level curiously). Theresult is a house that is thrice thewidth of most normal houses.
During the course of thebasement being extendedbackwards, the whole rear wallcame close to collapse. Whilstexpensive, it provided anopportunity to regularise the layoutof the rear façade. Windows wereenlarged and, in places, eventurned into patio doors. A verandawas added.
An original marble fireplace inthe lounge was uncovered andrestored. Cornicing was repaired asnecessary. Custom-made vinylflooring, displaying a map ofVictorian Brighton, graces thedownstairs toilet. The room abovethe porch features a free-standingbath and glass on three sides.
The garden, which takes itsshape from the curve of MontpelierCrescent behind it, containsartichoke thistles, eriobotrya andeuphorbia, along with a woodedarea and reclaimed Yorkstonepatio. My favourite view is from the summer house looking back to thehouse.www.buildingopinions.com

The high point of myweek was taking ahard hat tour insideour beach building,
which is situated at thebase of the tower. Theconcrete base was alreadyin and most of the 60 supportcolumns, meaning we were ableto visualise where everything willgo: the brasserie, kids play zone,exhibition, shop, hospitalityrooms, and our team's offices.
Conference visitors spendnearly ten times the amount thatleisure visitors do in the city – sothey are vital to our economy. Weface competition from cities such as Manchester, Bournemouth,London, Liverpool and Barcelona, and therefore we must continue toimprove our offer for the conference market.
We designed the i360 with the conference visitor in mind. Early on, Imet with the general managers of the Grand, Metropole and BrightonCentre to find out what they would like to see in the city. Their feedbackwas that we should create a party venue, where up to 500 delegatescould go to in the evenings after their meetings.
This, of course, was a challenge to fit into our building as we alsoneed to provide lots of facilities to attract our daytime visitor guests!The solution has been to build a design with total flexibility. We havethree dedicated hospitality rooms on the beach with a private terrace,and we have put in flexible walls that can open up to create larger eventspaces so we can hold events for up to 1,000 people (when we are shutto the general public).
Our shop will be designed to be wheeled away with all the fittingsand even the shop till points on casters, so the space can betransformed within minutes from a retail space to a contemporaryhospitality space.
And what a unique space it is, with stunning views of the sea andWest Pier, and the glass pod rising out of it in the building's heart.
