Reis Emre lives and breathes natural stone.Since moving from Turkey in the 1990she’s made it his mission to introduce the

From ‘the land of stone’ to BrightonWhen Reis first moved to Brighton he worked
in property renovation. “In the beginning Iworked a lot with wood and loved it,” he recalls.
“But then I started working with stone and justthought – wow! I loved it because it remindedme of home. Turkey is a land of stone – you’realways walking on it, you’re always next to it; it’s part of your life.”
Mentor studiesAs one of the biggest global sources of stone
(including 40% of the world’s marble), Turkeywas the perfect place to learn about the naturalstone industry. And learn he did.
Reis returned home and found a mentor withdecades of industry experience. “He gave me alot of guidance,” remembers Reis. “He kneweveryone in Turkey, and – most importantly – he knew stone.
“I listened to him carefully, we went to

exhibitions, and I studied and studied. It took methree years until I felt I had enough knowledge tostart out on my own.”
The birth of Stone RepublicIn 2003, and now back in the UK, Reis had the
idea of setting up Stone Republic. He then spentnight and day researching it.
“I looked at everything – colours, varieties,geology. I went to more exhibitions, touchedmore stone and learnt everything I could. Ivisited the factories, and quarries and mountainsthroughout Turkey, Italy and around the world.”
Passion “I think natural stone is a bit like wine,” says
Reis. “If you love your wine, you’re alwayslooking and tasting and learning – you can’t getenough of it. It’s the same with me and stone!But it’s not only me,” he smiles. “Lots of people,when they get close to stone for the first time,they start loving it too. Because you have to, it’sso beautiful.
“Just imagine: you’re working with a million-year-old piece of rock. Granite, for example, isalmost as old as the planet itself. And you canhave that piece in your home, in your kitchen, inyour office, and touch it every day. It’swonderful!”
The correct stone for the jobFinding the correct materials for individual
projects takes time and effort. “People often callme and say: ‘Reis, I want to buy product X.

Company Y are doing it for this much money.Can you get it for me for a better price?’ But Isay, ‘That’s not the right question! First of all Ineed to understand your project. What are youtrying to do? What effect do you want toachieve?’”
He says that customers can find thisfrustrating at first, “because they just want to geton and find the best deal for the material theythink they want. But I will only ever sell thecorrect natural stone for the job.”
Reis insists that his honesty with service andprices is not intended as a way of earning trustand repeat business. “No, it’s just me,” says Reis.“I need to be honest with myself in each andevery deal.
