P hew, I’m so tired. Tired tothe point of nodding off onthe bus, drifting into deep,
deep sleep the minute my headhits the pillow and taking a powernap at every availableopportunity. I have to admit thatthe pain killers prescribed to helpsoothe my ailing knee have nothelped in this sense, they domake me drowsy and I havecertainly avoided, as advised, operating any heavy machinerywhilst taking them.
What they have done is givenmy dream life a kick start. Theother day I woke at 5amcompletely exhausted. I got outof bed and made a pot of teaand went through to whatestate agents would call ourmain reception and I call theliving room.
Seated on the prematurelyderelict sofa, less than a year oldand falling apart, the night’sdreams came back to me.
I had driven down to Cornwallovernight to take my part in aproduction of Swan Lake. Heavenonly knows why as I have neverhad any connection with theballet except as part of theaudience. Anyway, there I was inthe corps de ballet dancing my little socks off.
After several curtain calls I returned to the dressing room in a marquee (did I mention that this was an open-air production?) to change. Theproducers came in and asked me if I could help them out. “We’re a man downfor the chorus of Madama Butterfly in half an hour, can you step in?” Well itseemed rude to say no, so I whipped off my ballet shoes and popped on myAmerican naval officer’s costume and did my vocal exercises before headingback to the stage as the world’s chubbiest ever Pinkerton.
No wonder I was exhausted and that was only one night’s exploits, the restof the week was much the same. The pills are all gone now and my sleeppattern is much better. The dreams maybe be continuing but for the moment Icannot remember them, as a consequence I wake up refreshed. Thankheavens for that!
This week we ask the question, is itpossible to get two beds for under£200k? Indeed it is possible so it
finds a place in our top ten at number four. It’s £199,950, with the big plus of noforward chain.
Round Hill Crescent is one of Brighton’sunsung architectural gems and as yet hasno parking restrictions, a plus in a citywhere parking is now seen as a luxury.
This period, two double bedroomapartment has a south easterly facingbalcony and a west facing garden. Theliving room boasts a feature fireplace, stripped wood floors and two floor toceiling sash windows.
Round Hill Crescent lies just beyondThe Level and is ideally situated forexcellent local shops, restaurants andbars and is only a short walk from thecity centre and seafront. The station iswithin easy reach on foot and the mainarterial routes out of the city are veryclose to hand.

Having spent the best part of the last 10 years avoiding travelling bybudget airline, I am now a huge fan of the Big Orange One. It is air travelas it should be with minimum fuss, making catching a plane as easy as
catching a bus. During the Easter Holidays, myself, my friend B and The BigDaughter jetted off to the furthest destination that the Big Orange One flies to.Amman in Jordan. I first went to Jordan five years ago and completely fell inlove with it, so it was nice to go back for half the price.
We spent the first three nights in the uber-luxurious (yet not very expensive, considering) Kempinski on The Dead Sea. The Kempinski is the most luxurioushotel I have ever stayed in, boasting at least nine swimming pools and abreakfast buffet that would put an Arabian Sheik’s wedding banquet to shame.Even when the hotel is full, so vast are its portals that it seems like you are theonly people there. We were upgraded to a villa as the hotel was fully bookedand in the villa was a list of room fragrances you could choose for your livingroom. It is not the sort of hotel I usually stay in, quite the opposite in fact, buton this occasion with little other choice, I forced myself.
Because breakfast was included inthe room rate, we took to secretingaway as much of it as possible to eatfor lunch and sometimes dinner. Myfriend B was lucky enough to havebrought a Tupperware box with herand The Small Daughter had theingenious idea of stuffing the shower-cap from our room full of bread rolls, ham, cheese and muffins. There wasalso free Cava with breakfast, whichwas rather dangerous for someonelike me, yet something I could easilyget used to.
Although the breakfast food was free, any other food ordered at the hotel washideously expensive and had to be taken alongside a dining-room full of ‘beige’(i.e Gucci-wearing) people, so for dinner, we would order one dish from roomservice and share it, although, due to lack of plates, one of us had to eat from abutter dish and The Small Daughter had to eat from a teapot lid. We were actuallyquite relieved to leave our luxury prison after a couple of days and travel South toPetra where at least we could afford to eat proper Jordanian food, rather than eatfaux Italian from a teapot lid, or ham rolls from a shower cap...

O f the houses of Downing Street,Churchill said: “Shaky andlightly built by the profiteering
contractor whose name they bear”.And he was right as the originalhouses were not built to last. Butlasted they have.
No. 10 is of course home to thePrime Minister and No. 11 to theChancellor but a No. 9 and a No. 12also exist. This is fairly academicthough as the buildings now form asingle complex within. There wereoriginally around 20 houses and thecurrent No. 10 was in fact No. 5 until arenumbering took place in 1779.
My most recent visit gave me anopportunity to see some of No. 10’smost famous features up-close suchas my new friend, Larry, theDowning Street cat. Larry wassecond to greet me, after the ever-present police officer, and did sofrom his perch on top of a radiatorby the front door. Incidentally, thedoor has been made of metal since1991 thanks to the IRA. The originalis now in the Churchill War Rooms.
No. 10 Downing Streetincorporates what was once aseparate mansion, HampdenHouse, behind. This is easy tounderstand once inside. One clue isa view, upon entering No. 10, to apair of double doors some wayahead, at the end of a long corridor. The corridor is far too lengthy toexist within the footprint of theDowning house. The doors, incidentally, lead into the Cabinet Room.
It is at the rear of No. 10, within what was once Hampden House, that manyof the best-known rooms are located. That includes the State Dining Room, thePillared State Drawing Room and the famous staircase with portraits ofprevious Prime Ministers.
Everything within is to be used too and the building is no stuffy museum.Antique chairs are to be sat on and drawers to be filled. A travel chest by thefront door which belonged to the Duke Of Wellington contains all manner ofuseful objects including Brasso, Blu-Tack and a doorstop.
What I like most about 10 Downing Street is the contrast between itsfunctions as a historic edifice and a working office. Behind some doors arerows of busy workers. Behind another is, of course, the Prime Minister’s flat. But expecting to find a glorious state room behind one particularly intriguingcurved door, I found Henry the [email protected] www.buildingopinions.com

W e are 24 hours into our mini break, and have just reached ouraccommodation. You’re imagining we’re on the other side of theworld, aren’t you? We’re actually on the Isle of Wight having spent
last night in Southampton. The Boy likes a random hotel stay, wherever it is. At the Premier Inn,
there is one bed in the room which is – let’s face it – a mattress squeezedonto the floor space. This is a delight to The Boy however, who judges aplace a success if the height of his bed is unexpectedly different. (He’s afan of bunk beds too.)
I’ve just remembered he previously was delighted at the depressingservices on the M3. “Can we come back here again? This is great!” heexclaimed, mainly on account that there was a carpeted area that he andYoungest™ could circle around on like wildcats, and the fact that he got tohave a slice of his Mum’s unwanted ham as a ‘pudding’ to his own meal.
We needn’t have brought toys. The Boy and Youngest™ are thankfullyfinding pleasure in what would be bland pragmatic features on anarchitect’s plan. After finding joy in a soulless long corridor in the hotel, next up is the car park, where much fun is to be had on a green concretewheelchair ramp, and a low wall, painted yellow. It means they’re in a goodmood as we head forthe ferry.
The ferry isadmittedly moreexotic. The time isdivided betweenwatching passingyachts and Youngest™wanting me to carryhim around following aman inside a monkeycostume. (I’ve just re-read that sentence, solet me stress: it’s theother man who’s insidethe monkey costume;I’m not wearing themonkey costumefollowing the man.)
On the Isle of Wight, westop at a village for lunch and there is a clay shop. Outside a sign invitespassersby to help themselves to tiny spare bricks. Youngest™ and The Boytake two each, which they use to amuse themselves for half an hour on anearby piece of grass.
I had been worrying our villa would be cramped, but space-wise it’s fine.I wouldn’t exactly recommend it in other senses. Soon after, I realise Ihaven’t seen The Boy for a while. Youngest™ shows me by running into oneof the bedrooms, getting in the wardrobe and closing the door behind him. When I open it, there they both are, cross-legged and happy, The Boy withhis DS and Youngest with Noddy in an aeroplane. I needn’t have worriedabout space, after all. They seem to only need the base of a wardrobewhich I’m estimating at 50cm by 80cm.
Now that’s entertainment.
“The ferry is admittedlymore exotic”
I ’m sitting in my old house surrounded by bin liners ofbelongings that didn’t make it to the new home. These are the reject belongings that I will
promise to eBay but then end up in the charityshop because I can’t be bothered to take picturesor work out the postage. There is so much stuffleft at my old house I might need a vanjust to get me to Oxfam.
I’m so tired from moving houseI’m considering making the filledbin liners into a black plasticpillowy bed. I don’t know where tostart on the mess, I feeloverwhelmed. I now have two homesthat are carnage. One is the new housefull of boxes that need unpacking and oneis the old house full of bags and boxesthat need to disappear.
Without a magic wand, I stillhave much work to do. But I’vegot PMS: Post Moving Shock. I’mwalking around like a zombie, I canonly cook ready meals, and I’m having tobuy new knickers because it’s easierthan finding mine. I never want tomove again. I might need therapy to doso again.
My mind is scarred of last week’slifting and pulling and pushing chest ofdrawers into lifts, then running up thethree flights of stairs to open the lift.Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. The lift is tiny, most furniture had to be carried up thestairs. I felt bad I was hogging the lift;elderly ladies had to use the stairs...
Everybody in the building welcomed us, one neighbour brought us tea andanother told me to keep the door locked as he had been burgled. Six years ago. They left his electrical goods but stole his healing crystals and tried to snortCumin off the kitchen surface. Brighton burglary... the police must have beenlooking for a suspect sneezing with spicy red eyeballs and “a great aura”.
The flat is beautiful, I can’t believe it’s my home to live in. I feel like I’m livingin a hotel, I’m waiting for check out time. Everything has a place in my newhome. Even the vacuum cleaner is happy, curled up in its cubbyhole in theairing cupboard. It’s so sunny and bright I feel like I’m on holiday (then Iremember all the work I have to do) and that I have no idea where anything is.
Last night I made an entire dinner using a cheese slicer. I’ve learnt that acheese slicer makes an excellent sweet potato peeler and can if needed, doubleup as a server, stirrer and all round poker of boiling food. On the first night weordered a pasta delivery, and ended up asking the neighbour for a fork. I lookaround my old home, on my bin liner bed. I’m probably sitting on the forks rightnow... Luckily I’ve no Cumin to pack; seems it attracts the wrong types in mynew area.

“Without a magicwand, I still havemuch work to do”
A s spring finally, er, springs, the warmerweather makes us want to get outside andinto the sunshine. If al fresco breakfasts and
early barbecues are also beckoning you, you’llneed the right garden kit to really enjoy them. Thisweek, Latest Interiors gets ready for summer, bychecking out the best garden furniture.
Sitting downWhether it’s a balcony, roof terrace, garden or yard,in Brighton and Hove we are well practised atmaking the most of whatever outside space and
sunshine we can get. Deckchairs are the entry-level staple: they can be folded, stored or carriedabout until needed. And when the sun startsshining, simply unfold, sit down, place hanky onhead and fall asleep. Opt for a cheery chair in thisseason’s bright pinks, blues and greens and add alittle seaside cheer.
For those with more space and cash, cast ironand wood seating (with lots of cushions), outdoorlove-seats and sofas (in rattan or basket-ware),and bespoke, fitted benches (around the base of atree makes a nice, shady spot) are perfect for along sit-down.
Eating outIf you’ve enough space outside to sit down, you’llprobably want to eat al fresco when the weatherwarms up. Investing in high quality, hardwoodstatement furniture that can be left outside all yearis a good idea, and built-in bespoke furniture – low, fixed benches and a table, for example – works verywell in tricky spaces. Ensure seats are comfy, andthat you have enough shade for the summermonths. Canopies and parasols can also provideshelter from the great British summer showers.
Lounging aboutSun loungers, over-sized cushions, soft blanketsand hammocks – if you like to lie about in the sun, make sure you have at least two of the above (and lots of sun cream). More of us are treatingour outside space as an extension of our livingareas, and the trend this year is for sofas and softfurnishings out of doors.
Everything elseTo make best use of your space, add some light for evening entertaining: Think low-level, soft andwelcoming. Lanterns, candles and hurricane lightsalso give a twinkly glow. Forget patio heaters (tooenvironmentally unfriendly) – use a chimenea, firepit, or jumpers to keep warm, and make themost of those warm evenings. We can’t wait!

Choosing your child’s school is a big decision for anyparent. The right education can set your child on the rightfooting for the rest of their life. We are lucky that Sussex
boasts a fantastic selection of independent schools, from thesmall and personal to the larger, well-known schools.
It is still possible to enrol for September 2012, all the schoolswill welcome you for a chat and hold regular open days andevenings. All schools strive for academic excellence, but whatsets some apart is smaller class sizes, allowing for moreattention to be paid to each child, resulting in a commitment tothe needs, talents and personalitiies of the individual.
With such a wide range of schools to choose from knowingwhere to start can be a daunting task. Although it’s useful tolook at a school’s website and study OFSTED reports, attendingan open day will really give you and your child a feel for theschool’s ethos and will provide you with an opportunity to getanswers to those all important questions.
Roedean School for GirlsFounded as one of the first girls’ boarding schools in the country, Roedeanprovides an outstanding academic education for 400 girls aged 11 to 18 years.
The school’s ethos is inspired by its stunning setting and superb facilitiesoverlooking the cliffs at Brighton. Mrs Frances King, the school’s dynamicHeadmistress explains: “Roedean is a place which develops the whole person. The girls have a chance to enrich their lives with sports, music, dance, dramaand a wealth of clubs and societies.”
“At the same time, the students balance these opportunities with a firmfocus on their academic studies – leading to world class universities andfulfilling careers,” she adds.
Roedean will introduce weekly and flexible boarding from September 2012.This will take the pressure off busy local families and reduce travel – providingmore time for prep, friends and activities.
