KAY TOWN04
K emp Town is about to get anew shop, a patisserie, and a real one if I am
to believe what I hear. Ilove cakes. I like the cakesof my childhood, theblackcurrant tarts andchoux buns, the vanillaslices and Eccles andChorley cakes and themysterious wet Nelson cake, orwet nellie as we fondly called it. I like the cakes of my student daystoo, the Soho bakeries thatfilled me with fat coffeeflavoured eclairs, crunchyItalian cannoli and the stickyhoney and nut pastries of the Mediterranean.
Later in Paris I fell in lovewith palmier, a simple heart of puff pastry encrusted withcaramelised sugar, and withParis Brest. Paris in mymemory always smells of hot butter, burning sugar and vanilla. In realitythe last time I was there it smelled of wee.
I love cheesecake, too, baked and not baked. The Americans have a fewconfections that I can enjoy – but they are responsible for one that I havegrown to hate. Cup cakes!
Now before you pick up your pens and fire up your laptops, let meexplain. I’m not against the cakes per se. It’s the name that offends me. I rather like tasty little cakes and have a fondness for icing and for buttercream too. But in my book these are more than adequately covered by thename fairy cakes.
Fairy cakes can come in any number of styles. I like them iced and I lovethem with the tops sliced off, filled with butter cream and then the lid, splitin two, placed back to make a butterfly cake. My mouth is watering simplythinking about butterfly cakes.
Why is it then that we are swamped by cup cakes, at almost every turn?Even my favourite haunt for a fry up has a plate of them by the tea urn. I hung my head in gloom when I saw that.
Cup cakes have all the excess that I equate with American food;overblown, oversized and now over here. Let’s have less of the frosting. Justbring me a nice little sponge with white icing and a cherry on the top please.

will help investment in the privaterental sector. There is an urgentneed in East Sussex to meet thegrowing demand for homes forrent and these new measuresshould help to make
accommodation moreaffordable. At a timewhen rents are risingthese budget changesare well received and animportant step forward.
The budget alsoproduced good news forfirst time home owners,
more of whom will now be able toenter the market through equityloans in the ‘First Buy’ scheme. This will not only make homeownership a reality for more peoplebut will help stimulate the EastSussex economy. www.rics.org

BASIL!!! Don’t you just want to hear those shrill tones as you walk alongBrighton’s promenade? Well all we have to do is persuade Britain’s mostfamous hotelier to come out of retirement and snap up the Price RegentHotel in Regency Square.
Oh, okay, I know he’s not a real person, but maybe we could persuadeJohn Cleese to give up his transatlantic lifestyle and settle down here insunny Brighton. After all, it was once the epicentre of the British cinemaindustry based on the idea that we had more sunshine hours thananywhere else in the UK.
The hotel is a fine Regency building over four floors with 20 en-suiteletting rooms, many of which retain lots of period character including fourposter beds. The location could not be better, Regency Square is one of thecity’s finest open spaces and the views to the sea are unimpeded. But thereal plus is its central position, close to the sea, close to the shops andnever far away from somewhere good to eat or drink. Of course if Basil andSybil where to to take over there would no doubt be a fine list of gourmetevents in the dining room.
With an excellent range of facilities including two private owners rooms andparking for two cars, this could be an ideal investment for someone who hasaspirations to run a hotel, and let’s face it, run it far better than Basil Fawlty. If of course John Cleese were to take the baithe could always pop over to Shorehamand take tea with the original MontyPython girl Carol Cleveland. For full details of this property go towww.oakleyproperty.com or call 01273 688881Fawlty Towers is on G.O.L.D,Sky Channel 110, Virgin Media 126

The Landlady on the joys of home improvement
The Landlady Building Opinions
I t is rare in Brighton and Hove for a planning application to really excite.More often than not, schemes are approved because “they are better thanwhat is there currently” or the powers that be are simply not powerful
enough to stop them. In the case of the Open Market, a site which holds thekey to transforming a large chunk of central Brighton, it would be hard todream up a more favourable proposition than that which was approved by thePlanning Committee in February.
The Open Market began in 1919as a collection of barrows ownedby ex-servicemen on Oxford Streetbeside London Road. The tradersmoved to The Level for a briefperiod and then, in 1926, settledon the gardens of the cottages ofMarshalls Row. The cottages weredemolished in 1938 though it wasnot until 1960 that the enlargedOpen Market was opened by theDuke of Norfolk. Even after yearsof neglect, it still holds a special place in the hearts of the people of Brighton.
The layout of the Open Market is to change and a saw-toothed roof is to beadded. Rather than an island of stalls in the middle, a market square is to becreated with stalls around the outside. Although the square promises to be auseful public space in its own right, I am particularly keen on the idea that it willnow be possible to see right through from one entrance to the other. The marketwill become an obvious thoroughfare between London Road and Ditchling Road.
This project brings together a number of organisations including the markettraders themselves, Hyde Housing Association, Brighton & Hove City Counciland LCE Architects. I am already a fan of LCE for that firm’s work on theJubilee Library. I am now won over even more.
A fair amount of housing is being put on the site to make this developmentwork financially. Francis Street is going to change dramatically as largebuildings will be springing up along its length. They are attractive buildingsthough and very appropriate for the area.
I have not been at all impressed with corporate property companies inrecent years but, on this occasion anyway, Hyde Housing deserves majorrecognition for some excellent work in pushing through a tremendouslycomplicated multi-layered project to a tight deadline. Why can’t all planningapplications be this exciting?Get in touch: [email protected] or www.buildingopinions.com
Robert Nemeth gets excited about the Open Market
H urrah! Spring is very much in the air, the beach is full and, as usual,Brightonians seem to be grasping it like a precious jewel, knowing fullwell that it could be snowing again next week. I am certainly launching
myself into the spirit of things...Last weekend, I went out on Friday night and didn’t return home until
Monday afternoon. This is ridiculous behaviour, even by my (fairly low)standards. The trouble is that once a month, I have a weekend with no workand no Small Daughter, which is just too tempting a proposition. Anyway, thepure exhilaration and subsequent feeling of being run over by a steam rollerhas made me determined to try and behave myself in future.
This is easiersaid than done, asa lot of my friendsseem to want togo out at themoment and I findit really hard tosay no. Worse still,I am one of thosepeople who simplycan’t do things inhalf measures andonce I’m out, it’svery difficult tomake me go homeagain, as lastweekend wouldseem to prove.Furthermore, it isalmost impossibleto sleep during theday at themoment, as all myneighbours –front, back andside – seem to bere-modelling their houses for the umpteenth time and the delightful sound ofpneumatic drills echo around the neighbourhood from dawn ’til dusk. I heardthat there is supposed to be a recession on, but tell that to my neighbours, who seem to be happily shelling out hand over fist in order to move kitchensfrom one floor to another, only to move them back to the original position twoyears later. My house needs painting in seven years time and I’m alreadytrying to scrabble the money together in order to pay for it and, much as I’dlike to move my kitchen (preferably to someone else’s house, so that theycould do the cooking) it is an impossible dream.
More pressing is the work that needs to be done on the house inHastings, which is all but sliding into the sea. I have finally got somereputable (I hope) builders to quote and am waiting to see what the otherlessees have to say about it. Having now run the freehold for around fouryears, I already have a vague idea of what the lessees will say and whilethe majority are as concerned as I am about the worsening condition of thebuilding, there are at least two flat-owners who are most unwilling to payany money at all. It takes about two weeks of politely angry emails, followed by one threatening legal action in order for them to even respond. There really is no rest for the wicked...

I n the same period that I learn to run (see this column, issues 514 and519), Youngest™ has learnt to walk. Just like when he started crawling, this is another cute stage. Seeing him totter precariously forward, often
with his arms held aloft, is one of those memories to treasure. Soon he’s builtup speed, to the point where sometimes, when he has to change direction, heovershoots like a cartoon character and has to use his whole body to bendhimself into his new alignment. It’s also a delight when, unseen, you can hearhim pounding towards you, and he appears, grinning with the excitement ofhis own motor skills.
However... (there’s always at least one ‘however’ in this column; normallya couple of ‘buts’ and at least one major ‘On the downside’)... having learnedto walk inside, he’s got ambitious. He wants to venture outside.
He indicates the latter, demanding to go into the hallway, grabbing his newshoes (which he’s very proud of and doesn’t like taking off) plus his coat andpointing at the hats on the peg.He motions emphatically thatyou need to put his coat on, andyou can judge how much hewants to go outside by howmany hats he makes youretrieve. And yes he wants themon, wandering around inside, defiantly dressed for outside.Height-wise and hat-wise, he’sthe spitting image of a gardengnome. (I’m getting him a fishingrod for his next birthday.)
Cute though the walkingstage is, it sometimes feels – ifyou’ll excuse the pun – like abackward step. In the outsideworld when there‘s jobs to bedone, places to get to, webecome slower, even though Iknow it’s an advance in hisdevelopment. (Imagine if yourcar became sentient, and inparticular took a liking to thesmell of roadside flowers. Yes itwould be emotionally enriching, but would it make getting A to B any quicker? No, it wouldn’t.)
Likewise, whereas we used to have all manner of vehicles, e.g car orpushchair, to speed Youngest™’s natural rate along, now he’s dead against allof them. He wants to walk everywhere. There’s no reasoning with the littlechap. I’m getting déjà vu (that’s French for ‘Christ! Not this again’) becausewe used to have some inside/outside problems with The Boy. However, whereas Youngest™ is at the moment all pro-Being Outside, The Boy used todislike moving between the inside and outside world in any direction. Thismeant we constantly were involved in border disputes, with him writhing onthe ground like he‘d been hit by a sniper just because we had the cheek to begoing inside. Or outside.
Maybe he just had an innate fear of a lintel.
I ’ve just eaten a WagonWheel for lunch. Mybreakfast was also one
Wagon Wheel. I know thisis not a balanced diet. Iknow I need another two tomake a whole wagon! Ispend my whole life tryingto get the four year old toeat healthily yet I seem tohave forgotten what fruitand veg are today. Fruitand veg are so expensivethese days, its moreaffordable to eat rubbish.Eight Wagon Wheels for £1(that’s a week’s breakfastsand one lunch sorted for aquid, right?). Ahem... Idon’t normally eat retrojunk for meals, I’ve justrun out of bread and I’mfeeling bit teenage. I mightjust have coco-pops fordinner! Do you rememberwhen you were a kid andyou wanted to eatwhatever you wanted? Iremember buying a loaf of bread that was all mine so I could eat it how Iliked. I scooped out the bloomer’s dough out of the whole loaf and didn’t eatany of the crust! I was 13. Then I bought a packet of jelly cubes (that you mix with hot water to make jelly) and I ate them straight from the packet.Woo, get me! Daring teenager wasn’t I? Instead of smoking banana skinsbehind the bike sheds, I was off my face on a packet of raspberry jello. I thinkI wanted to exercise my right to eat what I wanted.
Mother obviously needed the jelly cubes for the jelly, so I wasn’t allowed toeat them out of the packet. The loaf of bread was the family’s, with “eat yourcrusts” ringing in my ears. My rebellion was to buy my own food and do whatI liked! I think with today’s biscuit diet I am not rebelling. I’m clearly just toolazy to get up the shops for a loaf. A punnet of strawberries costs over £2and with my four year old, that lasts as a 12-minute snack. I’ll buy a £2 bagof apples that lasts a week. It’s terrible that junk is cheaper than good food. I imagine my mum shaking her head at my Wagon Wheel meal. My mum hasactually been taken into hospital with a stomach problem; it’s calleddiverticulitis. She’s being kept in, on a drip and is not allowed to eat! Thedisease is caused by lack of fibre in the diet. Apples contain lots of fibre, thatmust be why ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’. I actually manage tofeed my child really healthy food, I hope she doesn’t rebel soon with biscuitysnacks for meals. Sometimes I just forget to feed myself. I think this is quitecommon for mothers; children’s needs are so dominant it’s easy to forgetone’s own. Today I’m going to buy some apples for my mum and for mydaughter. I must remember apples for me...

Old fashioned charmWe’re still loving a bit of old-fashioned comfort this season, andtraditional sofa designs likeChesterfields and other period stylesare still popular. If you’ve got space,go for something big in aged leather, velvet, linen or a classic Libertyprint. Traditional style sofas work inboth period and contemporaryspaces, giving an eclectic, vintagefeel. Of course, you can buy new –there’s a huge choice of fabuloustraditional sofas on the high streetright now. If you’re on a budget, though, you could scout aroundsecond-hand shops and buy vintage– a new set of covers can transforma bargain buy. When buying pre-owned, check the sofa structure and

cushions carefully before partingwith any cash: saggy cushions canbe replaced, but a broken frame istricky to fix.
Modern shapes For a more contemporary look, optfor low-levels and clean, simplelines, in neutrals, monochrome orbright colour blocks. These styleswork best in simple, quality fabricswith texture: think tweed, linen, suede and wool. If you’re after asofter look, break up harsh lineswith sumptuous cushions andthrows. Colour and patternAfter many seasons of neutral andnatural tones, colour and pattern aremaking a big comeback this year.Textured fabrics are great for depthand sheer sensual interest, but for
real visual impact you need boldcolour. Crimson, plum, hot pink, andpeacock shades of royal blue andemerald green are brightening upliving spaces once more. F or those of you who regularlyread this column, you mayrecall that I touched upon the
use of mediation when couplesseparate. The end of a relationshipcan be one of the most stressfulevents in a person’s life, even morestressful than moving house! Asfrom April, in a bid to limit the stressof relationship breakdowns, coupleswho are married or in a civilpartnership will be encouraged toattend mediation.
Mediation has played a part indivorce proceedings for many years. From 6 April married couplesincluding those in civil partnershipswill have to consider mediation at
every stage of their separation. Theirlawyers and the court will be obligedto try and persuade and focus themto attend mediation during thecourse of proceedings.
The aim of a mediator is not, aspeople often presume, to encouragecouples to get back together, but tohelp them come to terms with theirrelationship breakdown, so that theycan deal with financial matters andchild related issues together, withoutthe need for the intervention of thecourt, and to reduce costs.
Mediators have specialisttraining in resolving disputes. They are independent and impartial. It is their job to cut through the
acrimony and get down to the ‘nitty gritty’ to help the couplesresolve issues arising from therelationship breakdown.
The majority of mediations result in agreement upon the day of mediation or shortly thereafter.
Our lawyers are encouraged toassist and prepare clients formediation and to make sure thatterms of the agreement reached are fair and binding.
Any effort to reduce the stressand costs of a relationshipbreakdown is to be applauded.

Leaders to have main stage at Brighton Marathon with fantastic array of live musicLeaders are delighted to again be supporting the Brighton Marathon on Sunday 10th April. We will have the main stage along the promenade, where a fantastic array of bands and singers will perform on behalf of Juice FM for the enjoyment of participants and spectators alike. We will also be giving away loads of goodies throughout the day, including Bags for Life, frisbees, balloons, umbrellas and key rings.
Following the success of last year’s first Brighton Marathon, this year’s marathon looks set to be even bigger and better. More than 13,000 runners will take part and the organisers are expecting an increase in spectators, up from around 85,000 last year. All in all, the City’s biggest one day sporting event promises to be a great success and we are very excited about being a part of it!
As a long-established firm with hundreds of landlords, tenants and employees in Brighton & Hove, we are always keen to make a positive contribution to our local community. We would like to wish everyone taking part in the Marathon the best of luck and look forward to what promises to be a fantastic day.

NO LANDLORD SET UP FEES, NO INVENTORY CHARGES, NO CHECK IN OR CHECK OUT FEES
Not a limited time ‘special offer’ as advertised by some other agents Town & Country has NEVER charged Landlord’s a penny ‘Set Up’ fee – nor any other type of charge on top of the monthly fee for full management or letting and rent collection.
We believe that the percentage we quote is the percentage you pay FULL STOP No extras, no hidden charges (well except for George Osborne’s bit!) and that’s the way it’s been for TWENTY YEARS.
Yep, time flies. We have been established as a Specialist Letting Agent since 1991 owned and run by the same guy who set it up. So if you want a no risk, no extra charge agent just call our number to speak to one of our experienced staff – and they’ve been here a few years as well!
