The environmental audit said work had been done to safeguard the tailings dam wall at the lead silver and zinc mine near Borro- loola, which was last year found to be at extreme risk of failure. Principal scientist Philip Mulvey said the greatest risk now was the volume of water stored in Cell 2 of the tailings storage facility and the continued seeping of salty water into Surprise Creek, a tribu- tary of the McArthur River. Mr Mulvey said the sulphate salts had been leaching out for a decade, creating a permanent salty waterhole in the Dry season and killing small organisms. The report also reviewed creek sediment data. It said 2011 monitoring had found elevated levels of cadmium, arsenic, lead and zinc in Barney Creek opposite the mine. ‘‘Elevated heavy metals in sedi- ments may be having an effect in macroinvertebrate communities particularly in portions of Barney Creek. This is considered a serious issue,’’ the report said. ‘‘MRM is aware of elevated metal concentrations in Barney Creek sediments . . . and plans further mitigation measures in this area.’’ Xstrata Zinc Australia chief op- erating officer Brian Hearne did not say what the company was doing to reduce metal levels. ‘‘The cadmium and arsenic levels in Barney Creek do not exceed ANZECC Guidelines,’’ he said. Cadmium is a probable carcino- gen that can cause birth defects and persists in the environment, concentrating in the food chain, according to the National Pol- lutant Inventory. The mining department would not respond until Monday. James ‘‘Jimmy’’ Deans leaves court after being sentenced yesterday Drug cop gets year at home By MEAGAN DILLON A DISGRACED Territory police officer who stole seized methamphetamines to cope with long hours at work will be sporting a tracking device for the next 12 months after being sen- tenced to home detention. Former senior constable James ‘‘Jimmy’’ Deans, 31, was yesterday given a two- year jail sentence suspended on the condition that he en- ter home detention. Justice Stephen South- wood said Deans’ criminal conduct was a ‘‘breach of trust’’ because he was on duty when he took the drugs. The ex-drug squad cop, who resigned after his arrest, was busted stealing methamphetamines from the exhibit room at police headquarters. Three days later he stole ‘‘one crystal’’ from a seizure in Ludmilla. Justice Southwood said that Deans started taking drugs to keep up with the police force’s heavy work- load before he started to steal the seized substances to feed his addiction. ‘‘The temptation was too great,’’ he said.
