St Vincent de Paul volun- teer Martha Swart said generous Territorians had donated about 800 Christmas gifts to the local charity. The presents will go to those who can’t afford to buy their children Christ- mas presents. ‘‘That’s more than we’ve ever had before,’’ Ms Swart said. She said 99 per cent of gifts were brand new and included two bicycles, 10 skateboards, four fishing rods and a radio. ‘‘All were great quality,’’ Ms Swart said. ‘‘There were some lovely presents for older girls like movie vouchers. ‘‘Most presents, as usual, were for boys and girls aged between two and eight years old. There were some beautiful toys, trucks, little and big, cars, puzzles and books.’’ Ms Swart said the most valuable item was ‘‘prob- ably one of the bikes’’ and a designer leather handbag. All of the presents will be delivered before Christ- mas to families identified by St Vincent de Paul as being in need. ‘‘We give them presents unwrapped but also provide wrapping paper and tape so the parents can look at the gifts before preparing them for their children,’’ Ms Swart said. ‘‘Every child likes Father Christmas to give him or her a present at Christmas and our aim is to facilitate that. It’s sad when parents haven’t got money for it, so we try to help them out.’’ Ms Swart said St Vincent’s volunteers also put together 450 food ham- pers over a week to donate to the families, containing ‘‘mainly Christmas fare’’. Twenty-five hampers were donated; St Vincent bought the rest from Food Bank. Bogarts manager Lynne Merrall with pens, pencils and markers collected as gifts for Balinese orphans Picture: JUSTIN SANSON Helping Santa get to Balinese orphans By KATINA VANGOPOULOS BALINESE orphans will be given a helping hand this Christmas by way of some new clothes and school- ing material. Lynne Merrall will travel to Denpasar in Bali to visit the Jodie O’Shea Orphanage on Boxing Day, where she will help bring happiness to nearly 70 children. ‘‘We’re sending over about 50 kilos worth of clothes and then pencils and textas they can use,’’ she said. ‘‘They have absolutely nothing, and we hope it’s a small way to help.’’ Ms Merrall is already plan- ning future visits depending on what the children, be- tween two and 10, need. She discovered their plight through Facebook where AFL identity Shane Crawford had written of the orphanage. The Bogarts Bar and Grill manager has support from owner Geoff Annear and general manager Mark McLaughlin, and the three hope to gather more donat- ions in 2014. ‘‘We’ve done lots of fund- raising before with charities like Variety,’’ Mr McLaugh- lin said. ‘‘This can be just the start in building a relationship,’’ Mr Annear said.
