The minimum load is 500 cars and we shipped 750 last month THE same ships that bring Hyundai and Kia cars to Australia are being used to backload new VF Commodores from Ade- laide to the eastern states. The switch to ships, in addition to the traditional trains and trucks, is helping Holden make ground on a backlog of Com- modore and Cruze orders despite extra costs including wages and insurance for the sea freighting. Holden has shipped more than 1000 cars since making the move and has no intent- ion of backing away from the bulk deliver- ies in the short term. GM Holden sales and marketing man- ager Philip Brook told Carsguide: ‘‘We’re doing it up the east coast to Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. We did a boatload last month and we’re doing another boat- load this month. ‘‘We’re trying to get the cars out as fast as possible, to keep people happy. It helps to bulk them all up. We have to build them, hold them, batch them, then ship them. ‘‘We pay a bit of a premium, but it’s more efficient from a time perspective. We’re trying to fill up the pipeline. The minimum load is 500 cars and we shipped 750 last month.’’ Brook said the first month of VF sales was solid without setting any records, as the company battled to have the right cars in the right place. ‘‘We didn’t have a spectacularly good month in terms of registrations last month, (but) the order rate is strong,’’ Brook said. ‘‘Our challenge is that we’ve got a red car and someone wants a black car. Or it’s an SV6 at the dealership and they want an SS with a V8. I’d expect by the end of this month we’ll be in relatively good shape, with the right cars in the right mix.’’ He said the good news for Holden in- cluded the popularity of the top-line, and high profit, models in the VF range. ‘‘We had a plan for a rich mix, which is good, but it looks like it’s even richer,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s Calais-V and SS-V..’’ Brook predicted a strong July result for Holden but admitted the company had been shaken by the Federal government’s announcement on new Fringe Benefits Tax compliance. ‘‘There is a little spanner in the works around this FBT change, which has cre- ated a fair bit of uncertainty.
