RYAN Harris and Peter Siddle got Australia off to a flying start in their thrilling pursuit of a third Test victory on day five at Old Trafford. However, with Austra- lia needing to win the match to keep the Ashes alive, and wet weather threatening to spoil their party at any moment, it re- mained to be seen how cru- cial a Michael Clarke drop- ped catch off Joe Root would prove in the final wash-up. At lunch on the final day England were 3-35 from 20 overs, with Harris taking 2-13 from seven and Siddle 1-6 from three. Root was not out 13 and Ian Bell unbeaten on two, with England already out of DRS reviews. Harris trapped England skipper Alastair Cook (0) plumb lbw in the third over of the day to leave England 1-0. He had an excruciat- ingly close lbw review on Jonathan Trott turned down by umpire’s call, but got his man nicking down the leg-side (11) in the next over. Siddle had Root edging to Clarke at second slip when brought on for his first over, but a simple chance was grassed, the ball hitting the skipper on his wrists. In Siddle’s next over, he had Kevin Pietersen con- troversially out. Umpire Tony Hill raised his finger. Pietersen immediately signalled for a review, ada- mant he hadn’t hit it. CANTERBURY survived Josh Dugan magic to main- tain their charge towards the NRL finals with a 39-20 come- from-behind win over St George Illawarra last night. Trailing by 12 points with half an hour remaining, the Bulldogs scored five unans- wered tries — including a double to man mountain Sam Kasiano — to solidify fifth spot on the ladder. For much of the night it loo- ked like being the Josh Dugan show after the recently re- signed Dragons fullback scored a first half double and set up another for Jason Nightingale during a wither- ing burst by the home side. Four straight tries gave the Dragons a 48th-minute 20-8 lead, but when they botched a kick-off for the second time in the game, the momentum shifted in the Dogs’ favour. The much-maligned Tony Williams did what Dogs fans have been asking him to do all year when he rumbled over off a short Trent Hodkinson pass to start the rot, the half- back again the orchestrator when Kasiano locked it up just after the hour mark. Two minutes later the Bull- dogs were in the lead when Tim Lafai sliced through to set up Josh Morris before Kasiano and Williams se- cured their doubles to com- plete the ambush. It looked like being a com- fortable night at the office when the Bulldogs scored two tries in the opening 12 min- utes, before the Dragons turned to Dugan — who on Friday agreed to terms for an- other four years in the red V. With little else working for the home side, Dugan scored two brilliant individual tries, the first with two big right- foot steps before a chip and chase on the stroke of half- time to give his side an un- likely lead. He played the crucial role in Nightingale’s try just after the restart and when Sam Perrett’s missed intercept at- tempt gifted Daniel Vidot a four-pointer, the home side appeared in control. Meanwhile, NSW star Greg Bird has been slugged with a grade one dangerous contact charge by the NRL match re- view committee following his high shot on Wests Tigers’ Braith Anasta. The Gold Coast back-rower won’t face suspension if he ta- kes the early guilty plea for the incident in the Titans’ 36-6 home win on Sunday. Should he contest the charge in front of the NRL judiciary tomorrow and lose he would miss one game. Cronulla veteran John Morris was charged with tripping Warriors centre Konrad Hurrell in the Sharks’ impressive victory in Auck- land on Saturday. Rising star joins Cowboys’ senior squad to muddy waters on Bowen’s future NORTH Queensland star Matt Bowen’s uncertain NRL future has become more intriguing after the club elevated rising local fullback Zac Santo on a two-year deal yesterday. Bowen impressed in Satur- day night’s 30-12 upset over South Sydney but admits he’s unsure whether he wants to play on for a 14th season. The physical rigours of the competition and the 31-year- old’s continued knee problems have put the elusive fullback on the road to retirement. Contract talks with the club were put on hold last week due to the axing of coach Neil Henry for 2014, but are set to resume this weekend. While he’s also been men- tioned as a target for rival clubs, Bowen indicated on Monday that his body would determine his future — a de- cision that could spark a tussle for his No.1 jumper. A member of Queensland’s Junior Origin squad, Santo was the Cowboys Under-20 player of 2012 and his Holden Cup form has seen him pro- moted to the senior squad de- spite an injury-hit season. The club’s record-holder for most games played and tries scored, Bowen praised the 20-year-old but couldn’t con- firm he’d assist him in 2014. ‘‘If I’m here next year I’ll definitely be doing that,’’ he said of the youngster. ‘‘Zaccy’s been playing good. He deserves his spot in the Cowboys squad next year.’’ Santo comes in to the sen- ior squad as another veteran fullback, Clint Greenshields, confirmed he is to retire. North Queensland also ex- tended the contracts of for- wards Glenn Hall and Scott Bolton yesterday, as well as youngster Ethan Lowe.
