Eskom is set to start site preparations on the proposed multibillion-rand Thyspunt nuclear reactor energy plant near Oyster Bay during the second half of next year, with August laid down as the most likely date to start. If all goes according to plan, the plant will be in operation by the middle of 2022. According to Eskom there are still a number of steps to be taken prior to the con- struction of the nuclear power station at Thyspunt. The 4 000MW nuclear power plant planned for Thyspunt and set to be the largest nuclear power plant in South, has been approved by the Kouga Council in November 2011. This despite the furore the planned nuclear plant has caused in local communities. The gene- ral feeling among community members are that they cannot just sit back and accept that a nuclear power plant will be constructed right on their doorstep. Community members fear that the nuclear plant will be a threat to the local economy, environment and surfing mecca of Jeffreys Bay. It is alleged that 6.3 million cubic meters of sand will be pumped offshore during con- struction of the plant, threatening the liveli- hood of many fishermen. Surfers are con- cerned that this increase in sand flow could change the dynamics of the surfing condi- tions in Jeffreys Bay and surrounding areas.
FOTO:MONIQUE BASSON
DILAPIDATED sport infrastructure inthe Kouga will soon receive a new leaseon life to the tune of over R4 million.
According to municipal spokesperson,Mfundo Sobele, R4.03 million has beenmade available by the national govern-ment as part of the Municipal Infrastruc-ture Grant (MIG) for the upgrading ofsport facilities in previously disadvan-taged areas in the Kouga.
“The municipality will use the moneyfor the rehabilitation of currently exist-ing facilities which have become dilapi-dated due to vandalism,” said Sobele.
The three priority areas for the2013/2014 financial year, are Thornhill,Kruisfontein and Centerton sports fieldsand stadiums. “Not only will the residentsin the area benefit from having improvedfacilities which will suit their needs, butwe also expect some economic spin-offs aswe intend to use locals for the work thatneeds to be carried out,” said Sobele.

to provide safe bathing for the public at themain beach. To this end, the club insists ona high standard of training and maintains avigilant watch over bathers enjoying swim-ming in the ocean.”According to Smith, members completed
over 1 024 man-hours duty without any se-rious incidents. “Despite extremely poor fa-

THE Woodridge u.14A boy’s hockeyteamhad an excellent start to their sea-son, winning their first 6 games - re-
maining undefeated.
The team has scored 25 goals and concededonly one thus far.Unfortunately the group was not able to
tour in thepre-seasondue to anumber of play-ers being out of the country. Two of the boyshail fromKenya and one from Johannesburg. The rest are from Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage,Jeffrey’s Bay or St Francis Bay. Most of theteam played in the Woodridge’s u.16 HockeyFestival as part of an Invitation XI and theymore than held their own against the olderplayers. Some tough games lie ahead, but with a
come-from-behind win against York HighSchool a few weeks ago, the team is confident
that they can meet the challenges presented.Luc Duval was selected to the EP A teamwhile Ethan Haynes and Thomas Baileymade the B team.Coach Jacques Botha said: “In any season
the measure of success should be the im-provement of the players as individuals anda group, We have had some very pleasing re-sults but we continue to work towards devel-oping our individual skills and understand-ing of the game. As an educator I view schoolsport as a means of nurturing a good charac-ter: respect for others, selflessness, acceptingresponsibility, hard work and fair playshouldunderpinallwedo. This canbeaccom-plished whether we win or lose a game,”
