President's Message! All I Ever Needed to Know, I learned as a Kiwanis Club President!By Victoria Davidson-Castillo with apologies to Robert Fulghum

Most of what I really need to know about how to live, what to do, how to be and how to treat others, I learned in my year as a Kiwanis Club President. Wisdom does not come from the many hours I sit earning my college degrees, but comes from toll and triumphs I have shared over the past fifty-two weeks alongside my fellow Kiwanians, Service Leadership Program youth, and those community members our efforts have touched and supported.

These are the things I have learned: Keep an eye on the bell, it’s only yours for twelve months and it can be really expensive to pay ransom

all the time. Your gavel may belong to you forever but that can get kidnapped too if you aren’t watchful. Fines can be fun when everybody is willing to play along, if not they are just not worth the hassle. Board meetings can be fun when everybody is willing to play along, but that rarely happens. Ice Cream helps with all of this.

There are only 24 hours in 7 days per week, you can’t do everything and that is okay. Know your limitations and share them with others. Those who matter, understand, those who don’t understand, don’t matter. Realize that you don’t have to attend everything on the calendar. Your club is full of great people and they will be there to support all of the events on the calendar, don’t beat yourself up if you can’t personally attend them all. Accept that others have limitations too, some of them we know, others are hidden, be someone who matters to them and understand without judging. If a project requires continually begging for help, discuss how important it is to the overall mission.

THE KIWANISCOPE

Be willing to let it go if it doesn’t serve the greater good anymore. By open to replace old activities with new opportunities that serve your overall mission better. Ice Cream helps to accept these truths. Put your deity and your family first. Without those two things, you would not be here. Respect everyone else around you as they put their deity and families first. Without those two things, they would not be there to support you. Respect that not all members have the same passions, or purposes for being members nor the ability to contribute in the same ways. Appreciate each member for what they do bring to the table. Do not worry about who gets the credit. Worry that everybody gets credit at some point what they do. Sharing an Ice Cream helps thank them.

Thank about what a better world it would be if we all appreciated each other for what we did rather than fixate on who isn’t doing what. Remember that smiles and hugs are free and maybe the one thing that brightens someone else’s day. and finally remember to eat more Ice Cream because Ice Cream makes everything better.

Thank you for allowing me to serve as your president this year. I truly appreciate everything each of you brought to the club and I look forward to serving beside you for years to come.

Stay safe ~V~

Speaker of the Week - Mike Williams!Club Meeting, September 20, 2015!Story by David Malkin"!Trevor Ramos is a financial aid specialist and the author of How To Get Free Money For College. I need to thank Trevor for The Puente Hills Landfill is owned by the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County. Approximately 115 acres of fill areas of the 1,365-acre site is available for parkland to be designed, constructed and managed by the Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation."!The Puente Hills Landfill Park site borders native hillsides and canyons managed by the Puente Hills Habitat Preservation Authority to the south, as well as the Rose Hills Cemetery to the southwest. "!The site is located within the Fourth Supervisorial District of Los Angeles County and is bordered by the First Supervisorial District directly to the north."!How do you transform America’s former largest land¬fill into an inspiring site for reflection and recreation? How do you design for a landscape projected to shift and settle 125 feet over the course of the next several decades? "!The County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation, with Withers & Sandgren Landscape Architecture + Planning, are leading an expert team in a 1-1/2 year master plan to envision a new life for this imposing 500 foot-tall mountain built over 60+ years from 130 million tons of our collective waste."!The project entails planning for the conversion of approximately 115 acres within the 1,365-acre former landfill site and will include the preparation of an environmental impact report (EIR) to analyze the potential impacts of this change. The project will also include an extensive community outreach process that balances community desires for recreation, trails and open space, with critical wildlife corridor needs across the Puente-Chino Hills, and other identified needs such as ongoing operations and maintenance. "!Amidst challenges such as land settlement and methane gas collection pipelines, the Master Plan will potentially weave together interpretation; trail connections, recreation and habitat restoration. "!There are three primary areas available for park development: the Western Deck, the Eastern Deck and the Southern Deck. These "decks" comprise the currently available portions of the refuse-filled areas of the landfill that were covered with protective clay earthen caps (5 to 12 feet thick) after the landfill closed in October 2013."!The first area to open will be a small portion of the Western Area (40 acres), which was one of the first areas to be filled and has had the opportunity to settle over the longest period of time. It will be relatively stable and ready for development by around 2017-2019, but is expected to settle another 10 feet in the coming decades."!The Eastern Area (49 acres) and Southern Area (28 acres) are not projected to be ready for major development until around 2038-2048, when they have settled and become relatively stable."!The internal trash from the past decades will decompose and settle, reducing the overall height by as much as 120 feet over the next 30 years. Less intensive park development may be possible on the top decks of these areas in the interim."!The next meeting to discuss this project is: September 30th 6:30PM – 9:30PM at the Hacienda Heights Community Center."

!!!REFLECTIONS ON MY AWARDBy David Malkin"

One of the hardest decisions that a President of a Kiwanis Club has to make is who should receive Distinguished Service Awards (DSA) and Kiwanian of the Year. This difficulty is enhanced ten times for the President of the Hacienda Heights Kiwanis Club because our members do so much service. When I arrived at the gala I was not even thinking about the Kiwanian of the Year award. In fact, it did not even cross my mind until it was announced as the next item on the agenda. As I listened to our President, Victoria, describe her emotional response to our involvement with the Special Olympics, Host Town for Chinese Taipei, I began to realize I might be the one who will be named Kiwanian of the Year. However, at the same time, I was thinking how fortunate I was to be the coordinator of this event and how much I got out of it from the athletes. When my name was announced I was in disbelief. Why should I be awarded this honor when I already got so much satisfaction out coordinating this event? Then I realized how the Special Olympics represented so much of what Kiwanis is all about; service, leadership, values, opportunities, team work and caring. When I was presented with the award I began to think of everyone who made the events possible and was worried that I would not remember to thank everyone. I was fortunate that I was not given the microphone for comments, which allowed me time to

go home and think about what I should say. That evening I wrote the following email that I would like to share with all of our club members:"

!Victoria, you really pulled off one of the biggest surprises of my career with Hacienda Heights Kiwanis Club, and my life. I never thought that I would be considered for the Kiwanian of the Year Award 2015. So many of our club members do so much and give of their time on a daily bases, it is truly an honor to receive this award. You mentioned in your presentation that the Special Olympics were one of many highlights in your year as President of the Hacienda Heights Kiwanis Club. The success of that event was made possible by the teamwork of so many people, like most Kiwanis events, that I need to give them credit.!

REFLECTIONS ON MY AWARDFirst, the members of our club who made this event possible with hundred of hours of volunteer work and monies to support the activities. Our members do not know the word "can't". They are always there to help when needed. Congressman Ed Royce for connecting me with the Dodger Organization and obtaining the Dodger goodie bags including bobble heads, caps, and Dodger accessories. Supervisor Don Knabe and his staff including Angie Valenzuela for arranging the busses to enable us to move the athletes around and assisting us to work with Brian Ceballos and Joe Mendoza to obtain the Parks and Recreation facilities with Susan Brown. John Hsu and Anne Ma of STC Foundation for a night of entertainment and great food and Gino Kwok and the HLPUSD School District Cheer Team and Robert Barba HLPUSD Police. Hsi Lai Temple for providing housing and many of the meals and with other community partners including, but not limited to: Brea Mall, Mt Sac and Trustee Judy Chen Haggerty, In-N-Out Burgers, Parks and Recreation Staff, Sheriff Departments Industry (Brian Sanford) and Walnut/Diamond Bar (Captain Jeff Scroggin and Deputy Louis Denver) and Highway Patrol, Costco (Breanne Nunez) and Sams Clubs for their generous donations, LA County Fire Department, and the list can go on. I know I may be leaving others out, but know that you are all in my gratitude."

My award is shared with ALL of those who made the Special Olympics a very "special" event for Host Town Hacienda Heights and the Host Town Committee members chaired by Kenny Chang. !

The real stars were the athletes from Chinese Taipei who gave us all so much that our memories of those days will always be part of our hearts and for that I am grateful for being allowed to be part of the Special Olympics Host Town events. The experience made my life much richer.!

With great appreciation, David Malkin

!!! On the 19th of September 2015, Goldstone traveled to Sycamore Canyon Park in Diamond Bar for the September DCM. Goldstone members brought respective supplies to package necessity care packages to the homeless, played ice breakers, and participated in a scavenger hunt! The Goldstone Scavenger Hunt was first held after the DCM. Members had to find 4 slips of lines from cheers hidden around the park by Allana Elarmo, Goldstone Executive Assistant. The first team who found the hidden lines had to fully perform the cheers in order to fully win the scavenger hunt." Members then played ice breakers such as Honey I Love You, Will You Smile For Me, Soulmate, and much more! The DCM was filled with new incoming KIWINNERS as well! One of the new faces there, Century Yang, a member of Los Altos HS KIWIN'S, recounts his experience," I really enjoyed my first DCM and had fun meeting a bunch of new people."" The next DCM in October will be held in Yogurtland in Diamond Bar on 18 October from 2:30-5:00 and we will be making friendship bracelets again due to surplus in strings! Jessica Chang, president of Los Altos KIWIN'S, will teach other styles of bracelets as well! "
