Story by David Malkin Our speaker this week was Deborah Reed, Bookkeeper & Certified Quickbooks ProAdvisor and owner of Bal-ance with Integrity, LLC. Deborah provides a wide vari-ety of bookkeeping solutions, from full-service bookkeeping to monthly, quarterly, or annual mainte-nance. Her goal is to relieve you of the burden of up-dating your books so you can focus on managing and growing your business. Deborah is a Certified Quick-Books ProAdvisor, a status rare amongst Bookkeepers. She can handle a wide variety of QuickBooks issues, from recommending the right QuickBooks software package for your business to untangling problems with your existing company file. For her presentation at the club Deborah focused on how to select a good Bookkeeper and Tips for a Small Business. She has 10 key tips: 1. Choose accounting software that fits your business needs. 2. Keep your accounting records current. 3. Once you have determined the proper accounting method for your company (cash or accrual basis), stick

with it. 4. Avoid comingling business and personal funds. 5. Review your aged accounts receivable report at least twice weekly to ensure that your customers’ ac-

counts remain current. 6. Deposit payments from customers promptly. 7. Obtain a completed Form W-9 from all vendors who provide service to your company. 8. Understand federal and state payroll tax deposit rules. 9. Reconcile all business bank accounts at month end. 10. Keep documentation on file for all business transactions.

Back up your files regularly. Once you select a bookkeeper, make sure you are comfortable with that person. Develop an engagement letter that is specific what the bookkeeper will and will not do. You get what you pay for. Your bookkeeper should be more than just a data collection person. Your bookkeeper should be able to summarize accounting reports for you. Finally, the person you choose should have passed an examination and certification process.

HELP SAVE BABIES EVERY DAY! SHOW YOUR SUPPORT The Eliminate Project gives every Kiwanian a chance to be a hero—by saving and protecting lives from maternal and neonatal tetanus. But what if you woke up every morning knowing you’d help save a ba-by from this painful, deadly disease? With one gift, you make that kind of difference. Just US$1.80 saves or protects a mother and her future babies from MNT. So when you give $657, you save or protect 365 lives. In other words, the mathe-matical equivalent of one life for every day in a year. And a gift of $1,304 saves or protects 730 lives—or a life every day for two years. Make your choice. Then make a difference. Every single day. If you are interesting in making a donation please contact Anna Wu, ELIMINATE Chair at 626-348-9705 or [email protected]. Thank You

By Sarah Yee Fall Rally South was such an amazing experience. Words could not even describe the amount of spirit the divisions brought. Spirit battles, loud cheers, and proud chants were all that was heard in the rally. Six Flags Magic Mountain, were not expecting the explosion of spirit that was brought. It is the most wonderful thing that students from all around Southern California to celebrate one club, Key Club. We all share the goals of helping others by raising money for Project Eliminate, and for the Pediatric Trau-ma Program. The money raised would not have been possible without every person contributing their service and time. The Key Club family spent the day enjoying the rides, and cheering for their club. Eve-ry moment was unforgettable from the bus ride there with other schools, and our lovely Kiwanis advis-ers, to all the little hugs given out to others through out the day. It didn't matter where or which divi-sion the member came from, we all joined together as one to become a loving family.

By Charles Karsch On Thursday, November 20, the East Valley Boys & Girls Club held their 4th Annual Thanks4Giving event at the La Puente Community Center. This annual dinner is put on by the Club, with help from many volunteers, in thanks for their Club members and families. This year the event was held out-doors in the patio area which made for a very festive setting. The event not only included dinner and desert for all who attended, but a fashion show put on by Club members who participate in the fashion club program, several speeches from Club members on what they are thankful for. Something new for this year’s event was the seated meal service. The EVBGC fed close to 200 individuals that night. Special thanks go out to the Hacienda Heights Kiwanis for volunteering and supplying the delicious pies, United Parcel Service and Naked Juice for all their volunteer help.

SHOP SMALL BUSINESS DAY PANCAKE BREAKFAST

November 29th

Story by David Malkin and Lon Salgren On Saturday, November 29, 2014, the Hacienda Heights Kiwanis Club partnered with the San Gabri-el Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Wal-nut Girl Scouts, and Relay for Life, and STC Manage-ment to provide a kickoff pancake breakfast to en-courage shoppers to patronize small business. This was the first such partnering of these organizations. The day started at 6:00AM with Lon and Dave W. delivering the trailer to the Chamber’s Office park-ing lot in Rowland Heights. Before we knew it the parking lot was busy with SLP Volunteers and other club members who helped complete the set up with tables and chairs. Club members in attendance included: Dave W., Trustee Lon, David and Teri M., Grace and Steven Chan, Izzeldin, John Hsu, Elimi-nate Chair Anna Wu, Ray Jan, LTG Mahmod and a surprise visit by Maureen and Jim Sinclair. The SLP rapidly got busy with making additional signs, including some in other languages to attack pass-ing potential customers. SLP helping were Felicia Kuo, Dylan Tran, Mandy Ca, Dante Gutierez and Min Wong of Wilson Key Club. Kalvin Chang, Josephine Tjandra, Brenden Huynh and Jodi Yip of Wilson KIWIN'S. We also had Scott Coward of El Dorado and Justin Tee of Mesa Robles helping. By 7:00AM we had all the tables and chairs set up, balloons and signs in place, donation tables for ELMINATE and can goods for the Girl Scouts and information table for Relay for Life. The day started off slow, but as we approached 9:00AM customers started to arrive. By the end of the day we had a successful fundraiser by selling business card ads for the placemats, pancake tickets and collected money for ELMINATE and can goods for the Girl Scouts.

We want to thank all of our sponsors who purchased business card ads and Melanie and her son for helping us with selecting the site and obtaining the necessary tables and chairs from STC Management.
