This past weekend, Kiwani-ans from all over our District gath-ered together in San Diego for the 94th Annual District Convention. District Conventions provide an awesome opportunity to cele-brate our achievements, get to know other Kiwanians in our Dis-trict, meet our District Officers and most all incoming and out-going LTG's, share ideas and best practices with members of other clubs, and much more. El Presidente called our meeting, to order at 7:00 AM. Charlie Huff in his usual manner instructed all in attendance to place their right hand over their left ventricle, and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Feel-ing patriotic and standing proud, Grace Chan led the patriotic song; her choice “America the Beautiful”. Cowboy pastor Lon deliv-ered a motivational invoca-tion. Club members in attendance were Dave Wal-lach, Lon Salgren, Charlie Huff, Grace Chan, Dave Malkin, Susan Jacklin, Anna Wu, and Ray Jan. It was nice to see Ray after a long ab-sence, and Susan surprised us by making the morning meeting. Thank You both! David Malkin introduced his better half Teri, our IP First Lady who was our guest this

morning. Susan Jacklin in-troduced our guests from Wilson Key Club, President Crystal Espinosa, Bulletin Editor Dylan Tran, and Vice President Bailey Lu. Proud Mom Anna Wu introduced her bundle of joy and our future member Kyra. Dave Wallach led us in the wel-come song. We acknowl-edged Dave and Chris Wal-lach's 29th Wedding Anni-versary; Susan Jacklin led us in the Happy Anniversary song. We thanked our members, David Malkin, Dave Wallach, Lon Salgren, Izzeldin Osman, and Victo-ria Davidson for attending LTG Robert Davis’s last DCM of his term. WE also thanked Lon Salgren for chaperoning the Key Club Region 13 and Goldstone KIWIN’S beach clean up. Lon was also thanked for

providing and cooking Tur-key Burgers to all our chap-erons who attended the event. We also thanked Anna Wu for her hard work, and releasing two editions of the Kiwaniscope, one that was missed the previ-ous week and the other for the current week. David & Teri Malkin were our sched-uled guest speakers, and they partnered up to give us a informative talk on the International Convention they both attended in Tokyo Japan, and enhanced our knowledge on Japanese people and their culture. It was greatly enjoyed by all in attendance. Thank You to the both of them. Crystal Espinosa took the podium and thanked us for our sup-port of the Key Club at Wil-son, and accompanying the youth to the Key Club Inter-

national Convention in July. David Wallach sold the “Split the Pot” tickets; a winning ticket was pulled declaring El Presidente as the winner of $60.00 ($6.00) Kiwanis Dollars. El Presidente donated the winnings to Wilson Key Club. Under the supervision of Dave Wallach, Crystal Espinosa performed the pin & badge checks, and helped collect cans for Del Haven. El Presidente circulated our donation jars and we col-lected $4.00 for Children’s Hospital, $2.00 for Relay for Life, and $5.00 for ELIMI-NATE. A total of $42.00 was contributed by generous members for Happy/Sad dollars. Charlie Huff was Mr. K. and reported every-one to be friendly. During the meeting El Presidente’s bell grew wings or legs to get close to Charlie Huff and hide under the banner co-vers, but El Preidente found the bell in time to ring it at 8:30 AM, at which time the meeting was adjourned as we sang “Hail to Kiwanis”. Thank you all for making it fun. Submitted by: Grace Chan & Mahmood Bashir

Hacienda Hts. Kiwanis—Distinguished Club!! (2013-14)

Story by: Mahmood Bashir Its always a great feeling when one's home club is recognized for the hard work of its members, and the lead-ership team. Five of our members, Lon Salgren, Dave Wallach, Anna Wu, and Mahmood & Nancy Bashir were at hand at the District Convention to cheer for our club when the announcement was made naming our club as being a Distinguished Club for the 2012-2013 term. It was a proud moment as our clubs name appeared on the huge screen behind the stage. Our Club received a banner patch for being a Distinguished Club under the leadership of our IP President David Malkin, coupled with the hard work of our Secretary Kathy Young, both of whom were recognized as Distin-guished President and Secretary for which they received the ac-companying pins. Congratulations to both of them, and all of our club members for their hard work and dedicated service.

Story by David Malkin This weeks speakers were David and Teri Malkin from our own Kiwanis Club. David and Teri shared with the club their experiences at the 2014 Kiwanis International Conference in Japan. Rather than presenting a travel slide show, they pre-sented a series of slides that depicted the “Fun Facts” sheet that they handed out prior to their presentation. The slides focused on the culture and customs of Japan. Below is the list of Fun Facts that were handed out and were shown via the slides. Read the list and experience what David and Teri experienced in Japan. Fun facts, useful tips about Japan!

Tips not accepted. Impeccable service is the norm in Japan, but tipping is not expected, nor accepted.

The theft rate is extremely low in Japan. In fact, you may even see bikes that aren’t locked or chained.

Upon arriving and departing, bus employees staying on the ground often salute buses. A deep bow is in order.

You will see some people wearing white masks over their mouths. In Japan, this is a common way to protect against germs—and to prevent the spread of germs when one is sick.

People waiting at a bus stop or for a train will form a line.

Common convenience store chains are 7-Eleven, Family Mart and Lawson. They sell everything from magazines to cigarettes, toiletries, soups, candy, beer, rice balls, skewered chicken, the iconic clear umbrellas and even thermal underwear.

Vending machines are everywhere. Cigarettes and drinks (both hot and cold) are the most common items sold.

Cars will stop at a pedestrian crossing the moment a pedestrian is about to cross.

Children and teens wear an elaborate uniform to school. It often includes a hat or a cap.

If you look lost while holding a map, a small crowd might soon form around you to try and help. Don’t be surprised if people go completely out of their way to help you find the place you were looking for.

Cigarette vending machines require the buyer to insert an ID to prove his or her age.

Many convenience stores are open 24 hours a day.

Umbrella lockers are available.

Bikers ride on sidewalks. The good news: It’s common enough that riders are good at seamlessly avoiding pedestrians.

Do not cross the street when the sign is red at an intersection—even if there are no cars or bikes in sight.

Outside of restaurants, plastic facsimiles of dishes serve both as menus for non-Japanese speakers and enticements for Japanese-speaking customers.

Magazines in stands are sometimes protected by a strip preventing their being read in the store, thereby keeping the magazine intact for the actual buyer.

By: Nancy Bashir Even though I am a Kiwanian, I attended the 94th Annual District Convention in San Diego as the spouse of the incoming Division 35 LTG, and as soon as we arrived in San Diego on Friday, just in time for the Awards Luncheon, Mahmood hit the ground running. While I was fortunate enough to attend all of the luncheons & dinners, the Tsunami Trio (Mahmood, Lon, and Dave), plowed through seminars & sessions like the dedicated Kiwanians they are. I would catch a quick glimpse of Mr. Rose Float Dave, a sighting of Sir Trustee Lon, and I needed a GPS to find that new LTG dude. Anna should be nicknamed the "jumping bean", constantly up & down, back & forth, multi-tasking Kiwanis with mommy duties, but always smiling. During the meals, while everyone else was waiting to be served, the Tsunami Trio would be walking around, saying hello & shaking hands with fellow Kiwanians. I couldn't help but think, if all Kiwanians were like Dave, Lon, Anna, and Mahmood, Kiwanis could set the world on fire. Their enthusiasm should be an inspiration to all of us. A huge congrats to Anna for receiving the Clyde L. Hurley Club Newsletter Award for her outstanding job with the Kiwaniscope, to our club for being honored as a Distinguished Club for 2012-13, and to past LTG Brad Manning for receiving Distinguished LTG honors for 2012-13.

94th Annual District Convention

San Diego, CA

By Anna Wu I was honored and excited to accept the Clyde L. Hurley Club Newsletter Award on behalf of our club on Friday, August 15, 2014 at Cal-Nev-Ha convention in San Diego. As this newsletters’ editor it has been a fun, education-al, rewarding, and challenging at times, but I’m so happy that our club can add this award to our list of accom-plishments. Even through I was the one to accept this award, it was not won by me alone. I could have not done it without the contribution of our club. Special thanks goes out to Mahmood Bashir, Nancy Bashir, David Mal-kin, Dave Wallach, Kathy Young, Lon Salgren, Ray Jan, Grace Chan, our SLPs and everyone that ever submitted anything for the Kiwaniscope. I really encourage everyone from the club or our community to submit your sto-ries for the Kiwaiscope. We love to hear your opinion and input. Lets keep the this newsletter award winning for many years to come!! Thanks everyone for your hard work!! Congratulations to Hacienda Heights Kiwanis!!
