Mahmooooo’s Message This past weekend was the, USA-4, regional kick-off for "The Formu-la". The Formula is a five year, member led initiative to strengthen Kiwanis Clubs, and the Kiwanis or-ganization as a whole. All our mem-bers need to be at the forefront of helping Kiwanis succeed by inspiring a renewed Kiwanis culture that em-braces growth. This is a concerted and an organized effort by KI, to train & educate Kiwanis members, to improve member experience, strenghten membership, and open new clubs. The idea is to provide the tools and support so each club, division, and district can form a leadership team to chart out a plan to successfully achieve the above. The goal is to develop a

leadership structure, over five years with 2700 additional leaders, to expand Kiwanis impact to 1650 new communities, and inspire and equip those clubs which are under charter strength to reach charter strength, and for those clubs who are at char-ter strength to increase their mem-bership by an average of 10 mem-bers. The tag line for "The Formula" is, Love it. Share it. Live it. When you love something, when some-thing really matters to you, you want to share it. You want other people to love it with you. You want it to be a part of your life. Let's get motivated to do our part. We all need to be on board to make this effort a success. Let us know if you would like to be a part of this effort. You can be involved at the division level as a trained club build-er, or a club counselor. If interested training, knowledge, and tools will be provided to guide you through the process. Lets, Love it. Share it. Live it. Helen Keller said it best "Alone we can do little; together we

can do so much", and if that is not inspirational enough, remember Henry Ford's words "Coming togeth-er is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success"

To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.

To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business and professional standards.

To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive and serviceable citizenship.

To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service and to build better communities.

Since we had a new mem-ber induction for Stepha-nie Hu planned, El Presi-dente called the meeting to order at 7:03 AM. Jim Stewart led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Lon Salgren led the patriotic song; “God Bless America” was his choice. Craig Cerro delivered an inspira-tional invocation. Club members in attendance were Dave W, Izzey Os-man, Kathy Young, Victo-ria Davidson, Lon Salgren, Jim Stewart, David Mal-kin, Charlie Huff, Grace Chan, Craig Cerro, and Ray Jan. Our guests in attend-ance introduced by Jim Stewart were Joel Beezey, Paul White & Vern Moyer from LPI Club, joining us for an inter-club. Lon Salgren introduced the guest at his table, Firuze

Barimani. Craig Cerro introduced the two guests at his table Angela Tseng and Dave Wallach led us in our “Welcome Song”. Toady’s program was an update by Los Altos Engi-neering Academy, and we were joined by Ken Hirscht, Michael Chang, and Sabrina Delgado. Vic-toria introduced Yolanda Hirscht (Ken’s Grandmoth-er). El Presidente intro-duced Bailey Lu, from Wil-son Key Club who arrived a bit later. We acknowl-edged Craig Cerro (06/05) & Ben Su (06/07) birth-days as Kathy Young led us in the “Happy Birthday” song. Our Membership Growth Chair, Dave Wal-lach assisted by Charlie Huff conducted the induc-tion ceremony for Stepha-nie Hu. Welcome to our

Ohana Stephanie! Ray Jan sold the “Split the Pot” tickets, our guest Angela Tseng pulled the winning ticket and Izzey came out the winner (yes again, this is the second consecutive week) taking home a whopping $90 Kiwanis dollar ($9). Victoria Da-vidson performed the pin & badge checks, and helped collect cans for Del Haven. Victoria also checked for “I Voted” stickers and the ballot stubs. She reported all members in attendance voted. Great job guys! Dave Wallach circulated the donation cans. We collected $15.00 for Relay for Life, $5.00 for Chil-dren’s Hospital, and $7.00 for ELIMINATE. A total of $42.00 was contributed by generous members and

guests for Happy/Sad dol-lars. El Presidente rang the bell at 8:35 AM, at which time the meeting was ad-journed as we sang “Hail to Kiwanis”. Thank You to all who attended and wel-comed our newest mem-ber Stephanie Hu. Submitted by: Kathy Young & Mahmood Bashir

This week our presenters were a very special group of students, who gives our club an annual update each year of their activities, The Los Altos Academy of Engineering. The group consisted of Kenneth Hirscht, Electrical Team Leader, Michael Chang, Deign Team Leader, and Sabrina Delgado, Public Relations Team Leader. The Los Altos Academy of Engineering is a student-run program that offers high school students oppor-tunities to explore career paths through education, training in vocational and business skills, hands-on experience, and exposure to engineering and tech-nology. The Los Altos Engineering Academy has a tradition of integrating math and science curriculum with student directed engineering projects. Students apply academic knowledge to solve real-world problems. From solar and electric powered cars to human powered airplanes, students learn to use teamwork to design and con-struct large-scale projects. Associations with Edison, Toyota, AQMD, and Boeing give students access to lead-ing-edge technology and expertise. Cooperation with Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State LA, Cerritos College has pro-vided academy students with access to some of the leading hydrogen technology in America. Students of the Los Altos Engineering program have been given ample opportunities since 1993 to demon-strate their abilities in a variety of projects and competitions. Human Powered Airplane - Constructed from 1997 to 2000, the Los Altos Human Powered Airplane was one of the longest projects ever worked on in the history of the Los Altos Academy of Engineering. Legacy Electric and Solar Vehicles - From Speed Racer in 1992 to Light Speed III in 2002, you can find technical specifications of our completed electric and solar vehicles in this section. JPL Invention Challenge - Students create projects to complete objectives presented by the Jet Propulsion La-boratory, competing against other high schools and JPL employees. Build Your Dream Vehicle - BYDV requires students to use mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, technology, and design skills to develop and design a futuristic, environmentally friendly vehicle. Solar Bikes - For younger students in the LAAE, the Los Altos Solar Bikes project was formed in the late 1990s

to compete in the A-class division of Solar BikeRayce USA. HICE Hydrogen Internal Combustion Vehicle - The goal of this project is to design and construct a vehicle that operates on an ultra-light, hydrogen internal combustion engine. Infusion Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle - The goal of this project is to design and construct an ultra-light, hydrogen fuel cell, single person vehicle that will travel forty miles in one hour using six liters of compressed hydrogen. Botball - Students use creativity and imagination to build and program autonomous robots that perform specific tasks, as well as compete against other robots. Bridge Competition - Students use software to design and then build a bridge out of popsicle sticks. The teams compete to other schools with their final bridges. Solar Boat - Students design, develop and construct a boat that is powered with solar energy. Pulse - LAAE created this vehicle in order to challenge themselves with building a student designed and created vehicle. California Challenge 2013 – Irvine Great Park Emerald Coast Electrathon – Speed Racer – Challenge to see how far an electric car can go on one charge. The students finished in 7th place completing 97 laps.

This year, the Los Altos Academy of Engineering has decided to once again participate in the Emerald Coast Electrathon. They intend to race Speed Racer as well as two new electric vehicles Volt and Omega. Since the competition will be in Florida, they will need funds of roughly $11,000 to cover the expenses. Starting at $10, you can support them by “adopting” a Los Altos High School engineer. As an “Adopt-An-Engineer” sponsor, they will include your personal message of fifteen words or less in the upcoming newsletter. Their newsletters will inform you of their recent activities as well as add your own personal touch. As a result of your generosity, they will be able to fund this year’s project and travel expenses. The Kiwanis Club of Hacienda Heights donated $150.00.

Sponsored Youth Corner

I attended the 10th and final meeting of the year for the Cal Poly Circle K last Thursday, 6/5. The meeting was similar to a Key Club or KIWIN'S in that it included an ice breaker. If you haven't seen it yet, the Circle K pledge is unique in that it the last couple of lines are SHOUTED! It can be somewhat alarming if you are not prepared. I also learned that their DCM's are scheduled for 4 hours and held in conjunction with the Key Club DCM for Div 15. Included in that allotted time is a service project and a fundraiser. This month's DCM is 6/14, 1-5PM at John Galvin Park in Ontario. The service project is making dog chew toys which will be donated to an animal shelter. The fundraiser sounds painful. Circle K LTG Alfredo Munoz has volunteered to have his legs waxed for $2 a strip,

ouch! As the meeting concluded, Immediate-Past President Jeffrey Golez reminded everyone that this was the last meeting that his prede-cessor Herren Wei would be attend-ing, since she was graduating from Cal Poly in a few days and heading east to college. They all surrounded her in a group bear hug. After the meeting LTG Alfredo Munoz, Club President Marion Bar-leta and a few more gave me a tour

around the campus so I could see the many changes as well as the familiar since I graduated 22 years ago. One of the big changes (in addition to the many new buildings) was the many choices to eat on campus. Previously there was just the campus run cafeteria and other on-site areas including Kellog West. Now there are several name brand fast food franchises available including a Starbucks adjacent to the new entrance to the library. There is also a ASU run food truck that parks daily in front of the old entrance to the library. We managed to find free food (hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and a drink) in the quad adjacent to Alfredo's dorm. Alfredo told me that he had helped to set up the event just before meeting me at 11:30. Later he wound up taking an entire tray of cooked hamburgers back to his dorm so it will be put to good use. Another change was the type of campus trans-portation. Back in my day it was a propane powered donkey pulling one or two trailers (similar to the old Disney-land parking lot shuttles). Now it is an air conditioned large van conversion. It was nice to visit the Cal Poly Circle K and have a tour of the campus.
