Taking Care of Yourself
so that you can be there to serve oth-
ers (with a smile)!
HAPPY NEW YEAR my fellow Kiwani-
ans! Thank you to each and every one
of you who have agreed to come
along with me on the wild ride we
shall call 2014-2015. I recently
a4ended my employer’s annual
health and wellness fair and read an
inspiring arcle on “Self-Love”, the act
of taking care of ourselves so that we
can be4er care for others. This week
I would like to share that message
with you as we take on new roles and
challenges together and look forward
to starng our 52nd
year as a club and
celebrate the 100th
year of Kiwanis
Internaonal.
Should you “look out for
number one”? Are you part of the
“me” genera)on? Our society sends
out mixed messages about self-love.
Looked at one way, caring for
“number one” and “me” is labeled
“selfish.” Taking care of yourself
seems to fly in the face childhood les-
sons of modesty and humility. But
taking care of yourself and holding
yourself in high esteem can allow you
to give much more freely of yourself to
others.
CARING FOR YOU ~ Self-love
is about you. You take care of yourself
and your body. You get enough rest
and quiet )me to be able to keep
things in perspec)ve. You are able to
be asser)ve and to set limits because
you care about yourself and you don’t
want to disappoint others. You are
secure in yourself
CARING FOR OTHERS ~ Self-
love includes others. When you care
about yourself, you are able to reach
out and share with others. This is turn
builds self-esteem and gives you a
sense of purpose in life.
MAKING LIVES BETTER ~ Self
-love enhances the people around you.
When you value and respect yourself,
you are also able to value and respect
others. People who love themselves
are tolerant of others and don’t feel
the need to dominate or put others
down. People who have a difficult )me
loving themselves, however, usually
find pleasure only being at one end of
the dominance scale or the other.
THE SELF-LOVE ATTRACTION
~ Self-love brings people to you. Every-
one likes to be around people who
care about themselves because people
with high self-esteem are able to care
about others. Far from being selfish,
people who have self-love are able to
make their own lives, and the lives of
others, healthy and sa)sfying.

about days of yore, when El

the meeng, just so they
could walk into the meeng
holding two dollars (fine at
the me for whoever arrived
the latest) in their hand, ea-
ger to help the club with the

Opportunity Drawings and the 90/10rule Opportunity Drawings and the 90/10rule Opportunity Drawings and the 90/10rule Opportunity Drawings and the 90/10rule What is the 90/10 rule? California Penal Code secon 320.5, subdivision (b)(4)(A) states that 90 percent of the
gross receipts generated by the sale of raffle )ckets for any given draw are to be used by the eligible organiza)on
for charitable purposes.
The frequently asked quesons (FAQ) page of the Office of the A4orney General goes on to explain that The
90/10 rule applies to 50/50 raffles, in which 50 percent of )cket sale revenue is awarded as the prize and 50 per-
cent of the revenue is retained by the organiza)on conduc)ng the raffle. 50/50 drawings are illegal because 90
percent of the gross )cket-sale revenue is not used for charitable purposes.
Since our club members are good cizens and many of our speakers and guests are law enforcement and civil
servant professionals, the last thing we would want to do is knowingly break the law. At the same me, our
weekly split the pot drawing adds to our fellowship and helps to support our administrave account to connue
to do the good deals we do in our community.
Therefore we are going to “change-up” our weekly drawings for 2014-2015!
• We will be con, nuing to sell opportunity ,ckets at the rate of 4 ,ckets for $3.
• One ,cket will be pulled during our general mee,ngs for the “opportunity” to pull a marble from the can.
Unpicked ,ckets will be discarded weekly.
• The can will contain 11 white and one blue marble.
• The week 1 moneybag will contain 100 Kiwanis Dollars ($10) regardless of how many ,ckets are sold that
week.
• 10% of money raised in weeks 2 un,l the blue marble is pulled will be added to the “money bag” contents.
• If the ,cket holder pulls a while marble, they will win a consola,on prize. The contents of the “money
bag” will move forward to the next general mee,ng.
• If they pull the blue marble, they will win the contents of the “money bag”. The contents of the “money
bag” will return to 100 Kiwanis dollars at the next general mee,ng.
• This means we are guaranteed at least 3 cash winners a year with many more possible throughout the
year while being good, law abiding ci,zens.
