Jayhawk Talk Jayhawk Talk Jayhawk Talk Online Online Online Since 1994, June has been designated National Men’s Health Month. According to the Centers for Disease Control, women are 100 percent more likely than men to visit the doctor for annual exams and preventive services. We all have a man in our life who doesn’t like to go to the doctor. This month is for him. Men’s Health Month was enacted to raise awareness of preventable health problems for men and boys and to encourage early detection and treatment. Here are some alarming statistics about men’s health from the Men’s Health Network: On average, men live about five years less than women. One in two men will develop cancer. Men have a higher death rate for most leading causes of death, including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and suicide. Approximately 30,000 men in the U.S. die each year from prostate cancer. Men are more likely to be uninsured than women. Hey men! If you want to see these stats change, there are steps you can take. Eat more healthy, even if you start small. Exercise regularly. And, maybe most importantly, schedule an annual physical to talk to your doctor about what health screenings are right for you. Do it for yourself and for your loved ones. Also, it could save your life. One way that’s utilized nationally to support Men’s Health Month is the “Wear Blue Day” to raise awareness about the need for regular checkups, education about testicular and prostate cancers, and other health issues that affect men. Here at KU School of Medicine-Wichita, we’ll have a “Wear Blue Day” Friday, June 23. Send photos of yourself or your department decked out in blue and we’ll share them on our social media platforms to show our support for the men and boys in our lives. Send your photos to [email protected]. You can also tag us on Instagram @kusm_wichita or by using #JayhawkDocs. The first-year students will be on campus for orientation July 24-28. Help us welcome them to the KU School of Medicine-Wichita.

by Julie Galliart June is LGBT Pride Month and as you probably know on June 13 the KUSM-W Diversity amp Inclusion Committee hosted an LGBTQ Awareness amp Advocacy event on our campus In addition to Dr Sarah Houssayni the planning committee for this event included Lillian Dickerson Crystal Nevins and Belinda Venters During the planning stages I heard updates in meetings and it made me curious about ways our campus is supportive of LGBTQ students faculty and staff I also wanted to learn how success in this realm is measured Wersquore living in an important historical period for LGBTQ awareness General knowledge about LGBTQ issues is on the rise due in part to increasing representation of gay and transgender characters on television Millennials were raised reading the tales of an iconic gay hero in the world of Harry Potter The news is full of debates over bathroom access and the economic impact of unfriendly facilities laws Colleges across the country are responding to this healthy upheaval Back in 2011 Yale Medical School drew attention as it began actively recruiting LGBTQ applicants for the first time Six years later active recruitment ofmdashand competition formdashLGBTQ students and faculty is commonplace in higher education and the bar is high A benchmarking tool called the Campus Pride Index aims to help campuses improve LGBTQ policies programs and practices The Index also ranks campuses according to eight categories of LGBTQ friendly-factors in order to help prospective students select a college that will meet their needs 280 campuses are currently ranked The Index is owned by a non-profit organization called Campus Pride which offers opportunities for online training a research and transgender policy archive information about bias and hate crime prevention and many other excellent resources on its website KUSM-W is not ranked in the Campus Pride Index But I read through their self-assessment questions and I met with our offices of human resources academic and student affairs and security to determine a few things that our campus is doing well Here are five ways that KUSM-W is supportive of LGBTQ faculty staff and students 1 Policy inclusion

Our campus prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in its

nondiscrimination statement for students faculty and staff

The State Employee Health Plan recognizes same gender marriages allowing same gender

marriage partners and eligible children to be added to an employeersquos health plan coverage

Academic and Student Affairs prints studentsrsquo preferred names on pictorials and other materials

2 There is a Transgender Workgroup at KUMC They are working on preferred names in data systems education and training facilities and resources On our campus a student group called ldquoMedical Students for Choicerdquo recently hosted a transgender advocacy group meeting 3 LGBTQ support

We have a gender-inclusive restroom (a restroom not designated as a menrsquos or womenrsquos space)

as well as gender-inclusive showering facilities on our campus

Free personal counseling is available to all medical students

4 The KUSM-W security team enforces KU policies regarding discrimination and exercises no bias during investigations They are currently evaluating their readiness to handle an incident involving transgender andor LGBTQ bias and are considering training opportunities to expand their knowledge 5 Educational opportunities in the ACE Curriculum

Faculty directors and assistant directors in the new ACE Curriculum will have advising roles and

they are being trained in LGBTQ sensitivity and support

A new LGBTQI enrichment course will be offered to first-year medical students starting this fall

Students will learn about the specific health needs of this health minority gain awareness of the health and social challenges this population faces and learn why the advocacy of medical providers is important Students will spend time shadowing at an HIVtransgender clinic and at the Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center They will also interview a transgender individual about his or her health and social challenges

From my perspective our biggest strength is not a policy we have or a specific action item wersquore working on Our biggest strength is the pragmatic goodwill of our people If you have feedback or suggestions for improving LGBTQ support on our campus please reach out to Crystal Nevins director of human resources and KUMC Diversity amp Inclusion Cabinet member

by Julie Galliart June is LGBT Pride Month and as you probably know on June 13 the KUSM-W Diversity amp Inclusion Committee hosted an LGBTQ Awareness amp Advocacy event on our campus In addition to Dr Sarah Houssayni the planning committee for this event included Lillian Dickerson Crystal Nevins and Belinda Venters During the planning stages I heard updates in meetings and it made me curious about ways our campus is supportive of LGBTQ students faculty and staff I also wanted to learn how success in this realm is measured Wersquore living in an important historical period for LGBTQ awareness General knowledge about LGBTQ issues is on the rise due in part to increasing representation of gay and transgender characters on television Millennials were raised reading the tales of an iconic gay hero in the world of Harry Potter The news is full of debates over bathroom access and the economic impact of unfriendly facilities laws Colleges across the country are responding to this healthy upheaval Back in 2011 Yale Medical School drew attention as it began actively recruiting LGBTQ applicants for the first time Six years later active recruitment ofmdashand competition formdashLGBTQ students and faculty is commonplace in higher education and the bar is high A benchmarking tool called the Campus Pride Index aims to help campuses improve LGBTQ policies programs and practices The Index also ranks campuses according to eight categories of LGBTQ friendly-factors in order to help prospective students select a college that will meet their needs 280 campuses are currently ranked The Index is owned by a non-profit organization called Campus Pride which offers opportunities for online training a research and transgender policy archive information about bias and hate crime prevention and many other excellent resources on its website KUSM-W is not ranked in the Campus Pride Index But I read through their self-assessment questions and I met with our offices of human resources academic and student affairs and security to determine a few things that our campus is doing well Here are five ways that KUSM-W is supportive of LGBTQ faculty staff and students 1 Policy inclusion

From my perspective our biggest strength is not a policy we have or a specific action item wersquore working on Our biggest strength is the pragmatic goodwill of our people If you have feedback or suggestions for improving LGBTQ support on our campus please reach out to Crystal Nevins director of human resources and KUMC Diversity amp Inclusion Cabinet member

by Julie Galliart June is LGBT Pride Month and as you probably know on June 13 the KUSM-W Diversity amp Inclusion Committee hosted an LGBTQ Awareness amp Advocacy event on our campus In addition to Dr Sarah Houssayni the planning committee for this event included Lillian Dickerson Crystal Nevins and Belinda Venters During the planning stages I heard updates in meetings and it made me curious about ways our campus is supportive of LGBTQ students faculty and staff I also wanted to learn how success in this realm is measured Wersquore living in an important historical period for LGBTQ awareness General knowledge about LGBTQ issues is on the rise due in part to increasing representation of gay and transgender characters on television Millennials were raised reading the tales of an iconic gay hero in the world of Harry Potter The news is full of debates over bathroom access and the economic impact of unfriendly facilities laws Colleges across the country are responding to this healthy upheaval Back in 2011 Yale Medical School drew attention as it began actively recruiting LGBTQ applicants for the first time Six years later active recruitment ofmdashand competition formdashLGBTQ students and faculty is commonplace in higher education and the bar is high A benchmarking tool called the Campus Pride Index aims to help campuses improve LGBTQ policies programs and practices The Index also ranks campuses according to eight categories of LGBTQ friendly-factors in order to help prospective students select a college that will meet their needs 280 campuses are currently ranked The Index is owned by a non-profit organization called Campus Pride which offers opportunities for online training a research and transgender policy archive information about bias and hate crime prevention and many other excellent resources on its website KUSM-W is not ranked in the Campus Pride Index But I read through their self-assessment questions and I met with our offices of human resources academic and student affairs and security to determine a few things that our campus is doing well Here are five ways that KUSM-W is supportive of LGBTQ faculty staff and students 1 Policy inclusion
