No one is turned away for lack of ability to provide the suggested five-dollar donation. The main clinic operates out of Guadalupe Clinic on Saturday mornings. JayDoc Clinic also holds Women’s Health Night and Diabetes Night the first Wednesday of each month to help patients manage chronic disease and deal with acute issues. Two years ago, the clinic expanded to include an Outreach Clinic held on Thursday nights. The Outreach Clinic is currently operating out of the Church of Christ in downtown Wichita and is focused on serving the homeless population.

Via Christi Welcomes New Residents

VIA CHRISTI FMR EXPANDS BEHAVIORAL HEALTH OPPORTUNITIES

When Ruth Nutting, Ph.D., LCMFT, started her job at the Via Christi Family Medicine Residency in the summer of 2016 she envisioned implementing a master’s level internship in Medical Family Therapy (MedFT). Her hopes were to provide a training experience for marriage and family therapy MFT students in the field of integrated behavioral health care. This experience would provide the opportunity for MFT students to collaborate with other health care professionals, develop brief assessment and intervention skills, and foster adaptation to a high-paced, ever-changing medical care environment. In addition to providing a training experience, this internship would more than double the opportunity for patients to access behavioral health services within the clinic setting. In the late summer of 2016, Dr. Nutting formed a relationship with the administrators of Friends University’s Graduate Marriage and Family Therapy Program. This relationship led to recruiting two behavioral health interns in May of 2017. The first eight weeks of training focused on education in the MedFT model of care, utilization of solution focused therapy and motivational interviewing techniques, and the formation of relationships with residents and faculty. Since July of 2017, the interns have been independently working with patients providing brief consultations during patient visits with their family physician and in follow-up traditional psychotherapy sessions. The interns receive weekly clinical supervision from Dr. Nutting, in addition to their designated supervisors at Friends University. In the upcoming academic year of 2018-2019, Via Christi FMR looks to expand the behavioral health program when three master’s level interns will join the integrated behavioral health team. In addition, Via Christi FMR is currently recruiting throughout the country for a doctoral medical family therapy intern. This intern will be provided a one-year internship as a behavioral health faculty member in training. The intern will have clinical responsibilities, directly supervise the master’s interns, share behavioral medicine curricula teaching responsibilities, and collaborate on research projects. With the expansion of the behavioral health program, resident and attending physicians will have a behavioral health provider available for brief patient consultations from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday at each Via Christi FMR clinic site.

Chelsea Porter, D.O., and Sarah Zorko, M.D., joined the KUSM-W Family Medicine Residency at Via Christi as second-year residents in February. Drs. Porter and Zorko completed their first 18 months of residency training at the Resurrection Health Family Medicine Residency in Memphis, Tennessee, which was forced to close in January due to inadequate funding. Dr. Porter completed her undergraduate training at Sanford University and medical school at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine-Carolinas Campus. Dr. Zorko completed her undergraduate training at The Ohio State University and medical school at the University of Toledo College of Medicine. Chelsea Porter, D.O. Sarah Zorko, M.D.
