Do you wish you could park closer to the building during the winter season of snow and ice without having to purchase the annual parking permit for $150? After many requests to offer a seasonal parking permit, quarterly parking permits are now available that will allow you to park in the permit-required parking lots for only $37.50 per quarter (July-Sept., Oct.-Dec., Jan.-March, April-June). The quarterly permit fee will be pro-rated if not purchased at the beginning of each quarter. Visit the Facilities office to submit your quarterly parking application and payment. This offer is available to anyone who does not currently have the annual KUSM–W FY13 parking permit. (Payroll deductions are not optional for this offer, and only hang tags will be issued.) If you have any questions, please contact Facilities at 293-2625 or e-mail [email protected].

This section will have a safety tip from John Coates or someone else in Security

Facilities Management is hosting a closed bid public surplus auction from 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 14, through noon Wednesday, Jan. 16. The items for auction include an assortment of desks, shelves, tables, filing cabinets, and miscellaneous office furniture. The items will be located in the basement surplus room behind the Facilities office and throughout the basement hallway(s).

Auction items will be assigned a tag number by 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11, for those who would like to preview what is available for bidding. Facilities reserves the right to reassign tag numbers and/or remove or add items to the auction inventory prior to the start of the auction on Monday, Jan. 14. There will be a minimum bid of $2 on all items unless otherwise posted. All bids must be sealed and include your name, auction tag number, offering price for each item(s), department, daytime phone number, and e-mail address. If you are interested in submitting a bid for any item(s), please deliver or send your sealed bid to the Facilities office by noon Wednesday, Jan. 16. Open, verbal, or e-mailed bids will not be accepted. Envelopes and bid sheets will be provided at the Facilities front desk for your convenience.

Sealed bids will be accepted until noon Wednesday, Jan. 16. Notification to the winning bidder will be completed by phone or e-mail no later than 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 17. All items sold in the auction must be paid for and removed from the facility by 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22. Items removed are the responsibility of the purchaser, and maintenance personnel will only be available to assist on a limited basis and by prior arrangement with Facilities. When removing auction items from the building, please be ready to present your paid receipt for the tagged item if requested.

Please submit payment to the Facilities office with the exact cash amount or checks made payable to KUSM–W. We will not be able to accept credit cards or make change for items purchased. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Facilities office at [email protected] or 293-2625.

Thank you and good luck bidding.

On Friday, Jan. 11, the public mailbox in the main lobby will be removed. The United States Postal Service requires a minimum of 25 pieces of mail daily to justify service for a public mailbox, and this mailbox has averaged only 18 pieces of mail per day during the past year. Unfortunately, personal mail cannot be accepted in our campus mailroom.

Being prepared for an emergency while at work may be the key to your survival if something goes wrong. Each year we conduct fire and tornado drills to prepare us in the event these things happen while we are on campus. Fortunately, neither has occurred on this campus, but we still must be ready. Sometimes even the unthinkable can happen, such as the active shooter at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Dec., the shooting at Virginia Tech in 2007, or at Columbine High School in 1999. Can it happen here on our campus? Will it happen here? When might it happen? These are questions with very elusive answers. The best we can do now is to be aware. Aware that it can happen here and aware of what to do if it does happen. Your awareness of how to deal with such a drastic event is the key to your likelihood of surviving that event. View this video to learn the best way of surviving an active shooter event. It may save your life.
