2014 was a year marked by many exciting projects, yet one very large and time-consuming endeavor remained hidden from the public for most of 2014: a set of new, independent websites for the Loveland Museum/Gallery and RialtoTheater Center.

The new websites were officially launched in December 2014, and in the span of a few weeks, have generated a lot of positive feedback. Notable changes include simpler navigation menus, more images, significant brand enhancement, and a focus on the programs and events presented by each venue.

The new websites will also enable each entity to expand its online presence with blog articles, videos, class registration modules, and online membership/donation platforms. Future additions can be expected throughout the course of 2015.

The Cultural Services Staff would like to thank MadWire Media for their gracious donation of design, development, and hosting services. We are very grateful for the time and energy MadWire has put into this project as well as their ongoing generosity and support.

If you have not done so already, please take a moment to visit our websites:

6 Art Exhibits

Botanical art inhabits the space between scientific observation and inspired creativity. It is an art form whose practitioners follow a long and honored tradition. This group exhibit of 14 artists shows a wide range of botanicals as a subject of art, from the classic to the conceptual. This exhibition links the tenets of botanical art with artists who work in a method outside the structure of classical botanical illustration. Seen together, these two approaches represent disorder within a highly ordered framework, and mirror the beauty of stability and chaos in the natural world.

This exhibition will show the range of possibilities within the world of botanical art: from an empathetic and scientific understanding of the world of plants, to an avant-garde approach with an implied, integral, and conceptual relationship between humans and plant life. Through their art, these artists convey the mutuality of need between the human and botanical realm. The healthy functioning of the natural world is a vital part of the environment in which we all live. This link can be shown by the way artists react to and interpret the power of the botanical domain. Botanicals as a creative subject have a metaphoric power that speaks to creation, both of life and the interrelationship of all that exists within the natural world.

CELEBRATING PLANTSThursday, January 22, 6 pmFREE Plants are rightfully celebrated in art. This talk takes you beyond that: to consider some of the odder plants on our planet; to highlight all the diverse plants we eat; to appreciate the importance plants have in our daily lives as medicine, building materials, etc.; and finally, to enjoy some of the more bizarre impacts of plants on human life and history. Whether painting them, wearing them, or studying them, plants are fun. Join botanist Kathy Keeler for a talk celebrating plants!

AN INTRODUCTION TO PLANTS IN CHINESE ARTThursday, February 19, 6 pmFREE In traditional Chinese art, plants are accurately depicted, but only a few species of plants are included. The same plants appear over and over for their symbolism or meaning. In this amusing and enlightening talk, you’ll learn to read the season from the plants in the art; ideas associated with plants and colors in Chinese art; and changes in plants in Chinese art during the last dynasty and since. Enrich your understanding of the images in Chinese painting and pottery; enjoy a few of the puns of Chinese art; and engage your senses with this rich visual tradition. A talk by Kathy Keeler.

TECHNIQUES SHOWCASESaturday, March 7, 12 – 3 pmFREE Join the four members of the Studio Botanica artist group (Heather Myers, Susan Rubin, Constance Sayas, and Carol Till) for a dynamic and interactive experience.Observe the artists at work, learn about the materials used in their art, and receive mini-lessons about each artist’s different media and styles. Basic art supplies will be available for use at this time.

Kathy Keeler, “A Wandering Botanist,” enriches and entertains with curious tales of the plant world – plants we love, plants we hate, plants that made people fortunes, and plants people searched for all over the world. She is the author of A Wandering Botanist blog, the print book Curious Stories of Familiar Plants, Notable Plants of the Foothills Trail hiking guide, Autumn in Kyoto photo book, and more than 50 technical publications on plants and ecology. Kathy retired to pursue travel and history and now searches the globe for stories of the plant wonders of the world. She received her Ph.D. in Genetics at University of California, Berkeley and was a Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln for 31 years. Kathy has traveled to 25 countries and all 50 states and has amassed tales from hundreds of plants.

8 Art Exhibits

Continuing through January 11, 2015

January 24 – March 29, 2015

Interpreting historical objects through the use of art can promote engagement with creative and critical thinking. Through artistic interpretation, unique facets of a historical object are unveiled, adding meaning, both on an individual level and within a cultural context.

History as Art: Part Three will recognize the invaluable role of Rocky Mountain National Park in the maintenance of our environmental heritage and the way the national park movement directed the development of Colorado’s Front Range. As the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park, Loveland has a historic link to the many people who have contributed to its history and those who value not only the recreational potential, but the need for transcendent experiences wholly separate from the created spaces of human development.

Using objects from Rocky Mountain National Park’s historical collection, artists will capture themes related to the founding of the park including access, use, and the memories of those who encounter this natural wonder.

April 11 – July 12, 2015Green Room

This series of paintings concerns itself with the memory of love, of those who have left or died, of the multitudes who have suffered atrocities in the past and across the globe today, and in remembrance of those who perished and survived the Holocaust. April 2015 is the formal 70th anniversary recognition of the end of the Holocaust in 1945 and is observed in communities around the world. From 1933 until 1945, six million Jews and untold numbers of other populations suffered and died at the hands of the purveyors of death under the Nazi regime in Europe and beyond.

This series of paintings is a silent remembrance of the many layers of suffering endured during the Holocaust and since. While not illustrations of any events or portraits of any individuals or depictions of the places wherein suffering occurred, these non-objective paintings connect with the metaphors of the Holocaust and those of loss and suffering in general.

Like memory, my works of art are clouded with emotion, history, and unconscious intentions. They are not a homage to suffering nor an illustration of atrocities. They are the unfolding of the strata of my mindfulness as I pursue and come to grips with my own understanding and remembrance of the loss of and to humanity that is the Holocaust.

In a highly subjective and perhaps selfish way, they represent my personal struggle with my remembrance of things lost, of lost love, of lost lives, and of lost innocence. ~ Andrew Svedlow
