19th Sunday in Ordinary Time OUR FATHER IN FAITH The Letter to the Hebrews today sings a hymn of praise to Abraham and to his faith, upon which are founded the religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Abraham is called “father” in faith by more people on earth than anybody else, numerous as the sands of the seashore or the stars of the heavens. Hebrews tells us it was this foundational faith that led Abraham to obey God’s call when he heard it, though he was called to journey to a land he did not know and told he would father a mighty race through a marriage he thought was barren. But Abraham’s faith, the author of Hebrews tells us, was his realization of what he hoped for, and the evidence of what he could not see. How often are we, in simple daily events of our own Christian vocation, called to an unfamiliar place or told we are to do something we do not believe we can? How fortunate we are to have Father Abraham as our guide and example!

Thanks is extended to all who to date have supported the school’s capital campaign, “Raising Generations - Building Community”. Gifts and pledges made to date total approximately $200,000. The campaign is being conducted in an effort to continue to improve the already well maintained school building and to provide even greater opportunities for those studying at Immaculate Conception School. Many people will benefit from the projects funded by the capital campaign. The initial campaign summer project has been the updating of the four washrooms in the classroom section of the school. During the past few weeks, quite a number of improvements have been made. The washrooms were painted and made handicap accessible. The floors were steam cleaned. New stall partitions and toilet seats were installed. This is the first of several projects that will be completed with funding coming from the capital campaign. May God bless you for your generosity.

Morris Area P.A.D.S. (Public Assistance to Deliver Sustenance)

Morris Area P.A.D.S. is a volunteer organization with the mission goal to provide a safe, warm, and respectful environment for the Morris area’s homeless during colder periods of the year (mid-October to mid-April). We currently have several Churches in Morris that host and provide space for homeless guests on a specific evening or two each week, from 6:30 PM to 7:30 AM, in 3 shifts. The shifts are:

6:30 PM to 11:00 PM 10:45 PM to 3 AM

2:45 AM to 7:30 AM Typically, the 2nd shift (11 PM – 3 AM) and 3rd shift (3 AM – 7:30 AM) are our most difficult to fill. The 2nd shift needs 2 volunteers, the 3rd shift needs 3 volunteers. Volunteer’s duties are:

1st shift: Welcome our homeless guests (sign-in). Serve evening meals (picked up by the Site Coordinator from the Morris Hospital).

2nd shift: Prepare bag lunches for guests for following day.

3rd shift: Prepare breakfast and assist guests in stowing away bedding, as needed.

All shifts: monitor the Site and guests to ensure a safe, warm, and respectful environment for the evening.

For the upcoming 2016 – 2017 Season (October 15, 2016 to April 14, 2017), we are in DIRE need of volunteers to monitor the shelter throughout the evening. Without adequate volunteers we cannot continue to provide shelter and sustenance to the Morris Area homeless community in these colder months. PLEASE, if you can volunteer for ANY of these shifts on a monthly basis (only requires 6 times a season), please contact Phil Wardlow via E-mail – [email protected], or cell phone (call or text) at (815) 685-8098.

Aug 7: 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time In this Gospel, Jesus says “Sell your belongings and give alms. Provide money bags for yourselves that do not wear out, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven that no thief can reach nor moth destroy.” Please help the Society of St. Vincent de Paul bring respite and hope to the elderly who are not able to find relief from the summer heat, and you will indeed find “an inexhaustible treasure in heaven!”

Year of Mercy 12/8/2015—11/20/2016

Hard but clear words today. Jesus tells his beloved “little flock” — that includes us — to sell belongings and give alms. Do not be afraid. Sell. Give. Yet, we are sometimes afraid to let go, to give away. I really like this, we say. I might need it later, we say. Since we are numbered among his disciples, what Jesus said to Peter and to the rest of the Followers he says to us: Do not fear! Give alms! Be ready to act for the benefit of others; be

ready to do what is good! So, this week, I will __________________!
