Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Last Sunday in Ordinary Time Revelation 1:5–8

A Kingdom of Priests

Christ is our king, and we are his subjects. That places him and us in a unique position with the rulers of the world. Christians strive to be good citizens, wherever we live. A good state will promote religious freedom and allow its citizens to contribute to its well-being. As Christians we have opinions about the value of human life from womb to tomb, the importance of caring for the needy in other nations, taxes that do not place an unfair burden on the poor, and the humane treatment of criminal offenders and prisoners of war. Sometimes the state’s official policy differs from the perspective of the Gospel. At those times we realize that Christ is our king, though someone else may be head of state. The Book of Revelation opens with a vision of the Risen Jesus. “He is coming amid the clouds, and every eye will see him.” Because of Jesus’ majestic appearance, the suffering he endured, and the redemption he has won, Revelation offers this hymn of praise: “To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, who has made us into a kingdom, priests for his God and Father, to him be glory and power forever and ever. Amen.” Christ is our king. We are more than subjects; we are priests. Through our baptism we are consecrated as a holy nation. We raise our voice on behalf of all the peoples of the earth.

You are Invited to Community Conversations about Procession

A documentary called Procession was filmed in our diocese and facilitates drama therapy for six

survivors of clergy sexual abuse, some from our diocese. It will be released on Netflix on November

19.

What is your reaction to this?

This might be the first you’ve heard about it, or you may have already attended a pre-screening. You

might be angry, curious, hopeful, infuriated, sad, anxious or all of these. Your emotions might be

directed at the Church or any number of individuals. You might even be mad at yourself for feeling

how you feel.

Journey to Bethany invites you, your friends and family to join with others in conversation about the

film and the thoughts and feelings this brings up in you. These conversations are designed as safe

spaces with a structure that allows for all to participate in the way in which they are most

comfortable. It allows for all feelings and opinions to be shared and for the community to support one

another. In addition, counseling professionals will be available for anyone who might want to speak

with someone one-on-one.

The events are open to the public, so please share this invitation. In accordance with COVID-19

safety best practices, registration is requested so that social distancing may be accommodated. Learn

more and register at www.journeytobethany.org/conversations. We are considering a fully online

(Zoom) session as well; if you prefer this option, please use the form on the website site to let us

know.

THANKFULNESS Tuesday at breakfast, Dennis came to me

as I was washing dishes. He said, “John,

I’m sure you don’t remember me. Ten

months ago I came in for the first time

after becoming homeless. You directed

me to a center that helps homeless veter-

ans. I took your advice and because of

that I was able to get into a home. I’ve

been housed for the last 9 months. If it

wasn’t for that advice and this place, I

would have been homeless and probably

dead by now. I just wanted to come back

and say thank you.
