The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception/ FEAST OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE

During this second week of Advent, we have two important feast of Mother Mary that we celebrate and she is given to us as a model how to be stay awake and watchful. On December 8, we honor Mary, our Mother. The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is a Catholic feast celebrating Mary's conception without sin. Even though this feast day occurs in the liturgical season of Advent, which prepares for the birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Immaculate Conception refers to the conception of Mary in the womb of her mother, St. Anne. The dogma of the Immaculate Conception asserts that, "from the first moment of her conception, the Blessed Virgin Mary was, by the singular grace and privilege of Almighty God, and in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, Savior of Mankind, kept free from all stain of original sin." The observance of this feast began with a Papal encyclical by Pope Pius IX, when he formally defined the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, INEFFABILIS DEUS, on December 8, 1854. Several years later, in 1858, the Blessed Mother gave her name to St. Berna-dette at Lourdes stating, "I am the Immaculate Conception." On December 12, commemorates Mary’s apparition to Saint Juan Diego in the hills of Tepeyac in 1531. She asked him to go to the bishop and tell him that the Ever Virgin Mary, Mother of God, sent him to ask for a church to be built atop Tepeyac hill. People in Mexico and in the United States celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on De-cember 12. Mary is the Patron Saint of Mexico and Patroness of the Americas. The will of God is to make each of us “full of grace,” just like Mary. A wonderfully appropriate Scripture passage for Advent, the Annunciation (Luke 1:26-38) is a main part of the Christmas sto-ry. Christ became human because Mary was willing to yield to “the power of the Most High.” Without Mary’s assent at the Annunciation, God’s plan for the Incarnation would have had to unfold another way. Mary’s cooperation was essential, for God does not force his crea-tures to bend to his will. Rather, we are invited to cooperate with grace.

Mother Mary serves as model for each of us who have also been invited to cooperate with God’s transforming presence. Christ can only be born in us if we, like Mary are willing to say “Yes” to God’s invitation and open ourselves to the life giving power of the Holy Spirit. Like Mary, we are all called to nurture and give birth to Jesus so that he may be born anew in our hearts and in our world. When Mary said “Yes” to God, Christmas became possible. She agreed to bear Jesus in her womb. During Advent, each one of us needs to be able to say our own” Yes” to God as we prepare to celebrate Christmas and bear Jesus in our hearts.

Advent is the season of hope. The promise of the prophets will be fulfilled. The Messiah will come to return the world to God’s original plan. Our thirst for the Messiah will be quenched by the celebration of his birth and life within our own lives. We wait. We watch. We prepare to celebrate. To the extent that we do this well, to the extent that our lives are a celebration of the presence of Christ in the world and to that extent, our entire lives are a celebration of Christmas. We have begun the first week of Advent with the simple word: Watch. This week we will be told: Stay Awake. The third week we have: Rejoice, and for the fourth week we have: Behold! Focus on Jesus, find time for silence. "Be watchful! Be alert!" and “Be Stay Awake.” Therefore, let us spend the season of advent Waiting, Watching and Stay-ing awake for the Lord.

La Solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción / FIESTA DE NUESTRA SEÑORA DE GUADALUPE

Durante esta segunda semana de Adviento, tenemos dos importantes fiestas de la Madre María que celebramos y se nos da como modelo de cómo estar despiertos y vigilantes. El 8 de diciembre honramos a María, nuestra Madre. La Solemnidad de la Inmacula-da Concepción es una fiesta católica que celebra la concepción de María sin pecado. A pesar de que esta fiesta ocurre en el tiempo litúrgico del Adviento, que prepara para el nacimiento de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, la Inmaculada Concepción se refiere a la con-cepción de María en el vientre de su madre, Santa Ana. El dogma de la Inmaculada Concepción afirma que, "desde el primer mo-mento de su concepción, la Santísima Virgen María fue, por la singular gracia y privilegio de Dios Todopoderoso, y en vista de los méritos de Jesucristo, Salvador de la humanidad, mantenida libre de toda mancha del pecado original ". La celebración de esta fies-ta comenzó con una encíclica papal del Papa Pío IX, cuando definió formalmente el dogma de la Inmaculada Concepción, INEF-FABILIS DEUS, el 8 de diciembre de 1854. Varios años después, en 1858, la Santísima Virgen dio su nombre a San Bernadette en Lourdes diciendo: "Yo soy la Inmaculada Concepción". El 12 de diciembre se conmemora la aparición de María a San Juan Diego en los cerros del Tepeyac en 1531. Un pasaje de las Escrituras maravillosamente apropiado para el Adviento, la Anunciación (Lucas 1: 26-38) es una parte principal de la historia de Navidad. Cristo se hizo humano porque María estuvo dis-puesta a ceder al "poder del Altísimo". Sin el consentimiento de María en la Anunciación, el plan de Dios para la Encarnación ha-bría tenido que desarrollarse de otra manera. La cooperación de María fue esencial, porque Dios no obliga a sus criaturas a some-terse a su voluntad. Más bien, estamos invitados a cooperar con gracia. La Madre María sirve de modelo para cada uno de los que también hemos sido invitados a cooperar con la presencia transformadora de Dios. Cristo solo puede nacer en nosotros si nosotros, como María, estamos dispuestos a decir "Sí" a la invitación de Dios y nos abrimos al poder vivificante del Espíritu Santo. Como María, todos estamos llamados a alimentar y dar a luz a Jesús para que nazca de nuevo en nuestro corazón y en nuestro mundo. Cuando María dijo "Sí" a Dios, la Navidad se hizo posible. Ella accedió a llevar a Jesús en su vientre. Durante el Adviento, cada uno de nosotros necesita poder decir nuestro propio "Sí" a Dios mientras nos preparamos para celebrar la Navidad y llevar a Jesús en nuestro corazón.

Nuestra sed por el Mesías se apagará con la celebración de su nacimiento y vida dentro de nuestras propias vidas. Esperamos. No-sotros vemos. Nos preparamos para celebrar. En la medida en que lo hagamos bien, en la medida en que nuestra vida sea una celebración de la presencia de Cristo en el mundo y en esa medida, toda nuestra vida sea una celebración de la Navidad. Hemos comenzado la primera semana de Adviento con la simple palabra: Vigila. Esta semana se nos dirá: Manténgase despierto. La tercera semana tenemos: Regocíjate, y para la cuarta semana tenemos: ¡Mirad! Concéntrate en Jesús, encuen-tra tiempo para el silencio. "¡Esté atento! ¡Esté alerta!" y "Mantente despierto". Por lo tanto, pasemos la temporada de Adviento Esperan-do, Velando y Permaneciendo despiertos por el Señor.
