Pastor’s Letter December 23/24 Dear Parish Family,

In Nazareth, the Church of the Annunciation is a magnificent basilica which was completed in 1969. It is a beautiful building and within it are images of the Annunciation which were contributed by many different countries around our world. Our own country provided a sculptured image of the

Immaculate Conception. Mary, under the title of the Immaculate Conception, is the patroness of the United States of America. The works of art are all impressive and a testimony to the faith of

countless Christians around the world. Within the basilica one can descend into the lower reaches of the site, travelling from the modern church to excavations of ancient buildings. It is here that one comes to a room which is venerated as the home of Mary and the place where the Angel Gabriel announced his good news to her. There is only a simple altar here on which the inscription in Latin reads: Verbum caro hic factum est. Here the word became flesh. It is awesome to think that here in this spot heaven and earth connected and the presence of God entered our world. As I stood before that altar I could not help thinking of the beginning of the Gospel of John and the great affirmation of faith that we find there as John tells us: The word became flesh and dwells among us! It is important to remember

that God dwelling among us is not just in that moment so long ago but it is something permanent. God never stops dwelling among us. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Here the Word Became Flesh

ocial Ministry

Have you been away from the Church? Are you thinking about coming back? Do you know someone who wants to come home to the Catholic Church, but is struggling with their faith? Maybe you or someone you know has experienced one of these thoughts: I grew up Catholic, but for some reason I just sort of stopped going to Church… I just moved to a new city, I tried going to a couple different parishes, but I never really felt welcomed... I just donʹt understand why the Church teaches what it does! Some teachings seem so outdated… If you have experienced one of these situations or thoughts you are not alone. R. C. I. A. is designed for Baptized Catholics who have been away from the Church, and thinking about receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation, those who are looking for a small group setting to reconnect with their faith. We also welcome those who are inquiring about being Baptized into our faith. Meeting on Tuesday Nights at 7:00 P.M. – 8:30 P.M

In the office of Social Ministry in the Parish Rectory.

There is NO COST for participation in this program. For more information and to register

please contact Jeannine Rose, Parish Social Ministry Office 283-0097 ext. 317

Winter is Coming! Its Getting Cold! The St. Bernard League is Here to Help Year round residents know what a beautiful time each season in the East End can be, but for many senior citizens the cold of winter and storms brought by spring and summer can be frightening and isolating. For some Parishioners the isolation may not be from

weather related issues, but from the reality of family living and working far away. You can help! We hope that you and your family will consider signing up to ‘adopt’ a member of our parish community, and partner with them through each season, or when the

‘red flags’ go up. You would be responsible to reach out to your assigned neighbor and be a lifeline for them during the long days of winter, or the heat of the summer sunshine. There is no deadline or cutoff period to join this Ministry. You can call the Office of Parish Social Ministry at any time to either volunteer your time or to be added to the list. ***************************************************** __I/we could use help in any season. Spirituality

Reflections On the Gospel

December 24, 2017

What an amazing day this Sunday is! We begin with the Mass of Christmas Eve and end with the Christmas Mass during the Night. Between those two liturgies we are immersed in the miraculous story of Jesus’s conception through his birth. We hear of Mary’s great “Yes” to God’s invitation to be the mother of our Savior and follow her and Joseph to Bethlehem on orders of the state. Nine months pregnant, enduring a long and arduous journey, Mary goes into labor with no place to have her baby but a cave warmed only by some livestock. This is the humble beginning of earthly life for the Son of God. We hear this story every year, but do we really absorb it? Do we fully appreciate the intense challenges Mary and Joseph faced from Jesus’s conception to birth? Do we recognize the poverty and simplicity that marked His arrival? His first visitors were among the lowliest of society. The message should be clear. The lesson should be transparent: To call ourselves followers of Jesus is to share in his affinity for the poor, the simple, the lowly, to be humble, to say yes despite the challenges, to behave as children of God. Blessed Christmas from Pax Christi Metro New York!

Eucharistic Adoration

Become and Anchor of Prayer for Family Life

The Catechism quotes Saint John Paul II: “The Church and the world have a great need for Eucharistic worship. Jesus awaits us in this sacrament of love. Let us not refuse the time to go to meet him in adoration, in contemplation full of faith, and open to making amends for the serious offenses and crimes of the world. Let our adoration never cease. Our parish will have an hour of Eucharistic Adoration following the noon mass on Fridays. We would like to dedicate this hour as a time of contemplation and reflection to pray especially for our families. For strength in family life, for the return of family members to the church, for healing and reconciliation within families that are hurting.

Our Lady of the Hamptons The Bucks for Books campaign to benefit the school programs at Our Lady of the Hamptons is on now and will culminate in the February 1st drawing of the prizes totaling twenty-five thousand dollars. Tickets are available now at the school. Call 283-9140 for details.

While the first trimester of the school year has just ended, it is already time to think of the possibilities for Catholic education at OLH for the 2018-19

school year. Registration will take place in late January, but information is available now. Placement in the elite OLH Prep program for grades 6, 7 and 8 is at a premium, so early consideration is advised. This program features Regents level courses in Math and Science, as well as an aggressive ELA curriculum and integrated Fine Arts.

OLH Pre-school for young children is offered at the campus of St. Rosalie’s Church in Hampton Bays. There has been an outstanding response to the four year old program, and registration is now closed for this term. Early registration for the 2018-19 school year is beginning now. Tours and conferences leading toward admission can be arranged. Informational packets are available. Call 631-283-9140 to set up a personal appointment and tour. More information is available on the website www.olh.org.
