Kerins Ph: 020 8672 5874 Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time (A) 5th February 2017 We sometimes describe a good person as being “salt of the earth”, using a phrase from Jesus’ words in the Sermon on the Mount. We are most used to be told that, for the sake of our health, we need to reduce the amount of salt that we consume. Too much salt in our diet is bad for us. But for the ancient world, salt was vital. As well as adding a pleasant taste to food, they used it to preserve food from spoiling. So when Jesus tells his disciples that they are “salt of the earth”, he is telling them not only that they have an essential role to play in improving the quality of people’s life (the “flavour” of life in the world) but also that they have a responsibility to purify the world and protect it from the corruption and decay of sin. Every Christian shares in this call to be salt to earth.
