5th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a
deserted place, where he prayed…He told them, ‘Let us go
on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also.
For this purpose have I come.’”
- Mark 1:35, 3
Jesus took time to pray. Can you believe the perfect Son of
God having a need to pray? He intentionally sought time to
talk with His Father and He was the perfect Son of God!
Finding time to pray was probably not always easy for Him
either. However, this was no excuse for Jesus. He had to
have that time with His Father to listen to His advice, guid-
ance, direction, and loving concern. He left that time with
God refreshed and renewed.
Finding and taking the time to pray is not easy, but prayer is
that vital link between us and God. Like Jesus, we must
break away from others and tasks to talk with God, even if
we have to get up very early in the morning to do so. Try it,
the results could be "OUT OF THIS WORLD". {Adapted from LIFE APPLICATION BIBLE COMMENTARY (NIV)}.

them. The cost will be $10 per book. This will makes a
great Christmas gift!

Lenten Penance Requirements – (Canons 1251 – 1252)
To sum up those requirements, Catholics between the ages
of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and
Good Friday. In addition, all Catholics 14 years old and
older must abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good
Friday and all the Fridays of Lent.
Fasting as explained by the U.S. bishops means partaking
of only one full meal. Some food (not equaling another
full meal) is permitted at breakfast and around midday or
in the evening—depending on when a person chooses to
eat the main or full meal.
Abstinence forbids the eating of meat, but not of eggs,
milk products or condiments made of animal fat.
Abstinence does not include meat juices and liquid foods
made from meat. Thus, such foods as chicken broth, con-
somme, soups cooked or flavored with meat, meat gravies
or sauces, as well as seasonings or condiments made from
animal fat are not forbidden. So it is permissible to use
margarine and lard. Even bacon drippings which contain
little bits of meat may be poured over lettuce as seasoning.
