James 1:21b Question of the Week How can I avoid hypocrisy and embrace the spirit of Gods commands? Am I merely fulfilling my Sunday obligation or am I a doer of the word, putting Gods word into action? THE HIGHEST LAW From time to time, newspapers and magazines will offer, as an item of filler, various laws that are still on the books but seem silly to us in our day and age. In one California city, it is illegal to have two indoor bathtubs in one house. Clean water, a precious commodity when the law was written, is now readily available, so the law seems silly. But the human value of protecting and preserving precious resources is still around, evident in many conservation laws that seem sensible to us. So it is with the laws of religious tradition. What Jesus scorns today is othersattitude toward ritual laws, an attitude that becomes nearly idolatrous when laws are observed for their own sake. Jesus teaches that observation of external ritual laws is of value only when they are emblems of our internal disposition toward the will of God. Our whole lives must follow the one ultimate law of God: to love God completely and to love neighbor entirely. Roman Catholicism is a tradition rich with customs, traditions, and even laws. As we continue to listen to the voice of Christ, we must always look into our own hearts and underneath our ritual practices to make sure that love of God and love of neighbor are what we prize above all. STMARY OF THE VISITATION CHURCH HUNTSVILLE ALABAMA

Itrsquos Not About the Germs This Weekrsquos Readings at Mass Deuteronomy 41-2 6-8 - Advantages of fidelity James 117-18 21b-22 27 - Response to Godrsquos gift Mark 71-8 14-15 21-23 - Jesus and the Pharisees Once again in the Gospel reading some Pharisees protest how Jesus and his disciples go about their daily lives Sometimes they protest who Jesus hangs out with other times they take offense at who he dines with still other times they are scandalized by his words of healing or forgiveness Today they complain to Jesus that his disciples arenrsquot washing their hands before they eat

Today we know that washing our hands before eating can keep us from getting sick or passing on illness through shared food In Biblical times the practice of cleansing hands and purifying cups jugs kettles and beds was about making things holymdashset apart Jews understood themselves as the chosen ones set apart from the surrounding peoples so they followed elaborate rules to keep themselves and their possessions clean ldquoholyrdquo or set apart They had strict laws for purifying themselves and their things if they became dirty or defiled in any way

The Pharisees believed that eating with sinners would ldquocontaminaterdquo them Of course that didnrsquot stop Jesus

The Pharisees followed laws that disallowed touching a leper a menstruating woman or a dead body because lepers were unclean blood was unclean and dead bodies were definitely unclean Jesus broke all of these rules as well

In this passage the Pharisees are critical because the disciples didnrsquot wash their hands after coming from the marketplace where they would have come into contact with plenty of unclean people and objects Once again Jesus calls them back to the spirit of the law not the letter of the law reminding them not to focus on the externals but to pay more attention to their interior lives

Questions of the Week

1 What are some religious rules laws or customs that can sometimes be broken to honor the spirit of the law 2 Putting aside external rules what might God be inviting you to change internally to be more like Jesus and less like the Pharisees Word of the Week bull Copyright c 2018 Ann Naffziger Published by the Pastoral Center PastoralCentercom All rights reserved

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION When an altar is dedicated the Rite of Dedicaton directs that if possible the relics of a martyr be mortared into the church floor under the mensa or ldquoaltar tablerdquo Up until this revised rite the general practice was to include small relics of saints in an altar stone a slab of marble that was normally set in the altar itself Todayrsquos rite states a clear preference for ldquomartyrrdquo and for a substantial part of the body in accord with our traditionrsquos desire for substantial symbols Martyr of course means ldquowitnessrdquo in Greek and was the title given early on to the people who by their death imaged the death of Christ From the beginning there has never been a shortage of such people although it took a while for the Church to develop a process to declare someone a martyr Saint Augustine tells how it was done in the fifth century By then popular opinion didnrsquot count as much as an official tribunal set up by the bishop of the place where the martyr suffered After the inquiry established that the person did indeed die for the faith a metropolitan bishop had to ratify the decision before a shrine could be built or an altar set up over the martyrrsquos tomb For the most part the honor paid to a martyr (called a ldquocultrdquo) was restricted to that diocese although the fame of some heroes spread so much that they were celebrated elsewhere The age of the martyrs is now and more people died for the faith in the twentieth century than ever before witnessing to Christ to the end Their sacrifice remains ldquothe seed of the Churchrdquo mdashRev James Field Copyright copy J S Paluch Co
