We have started the year off well here with another addition to the household in the form of a tiny whippet called Mouse who is just adorable and will be great company for our other (somewhat bigger whippet) Tim. They both came from Evesham Rescue (EGLR) whose details are on page 37. Well worth supporting and there are lots of wonderful dogs there and at many other rescue centres if you are thinking along those lines. I’ll try and include a photo of Mouse next month when I have a little more room! Catherine

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Stroud and the surrounding valleys and

Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Looking for Snowdrops by Zoe Warner of Vanilla Moon

The winter months can be the most difficult ones to get through with temperatures plummeting into the minuses. But don’t despair there are a few clever tricks that can ensure that you get through the rest of the winter and head into spring with a smile on your face.

Embrace the winter months The winter months are not just all about Christmas and New Year. Why not em-brace all those other months and get into the spirit of winter by taking up a winter sport - ice skating, snowboarding, sledding or even skiing. Instead of staying home and keeping out of the cold go and have some fun and add a positive light to these miserable months.

Treat Yourself

Why not plan ahead and have a nice treat already pencilled into your diary to give you something to look forward to. Winter seems never-ending when your spirits are low. Make a list of what you enjoy and be one step ahead of those winter blues.

Get stuck into a new hobby The New Year is normally the time that the majority of people decide to take up a new hobby. If you are not one of the majority why not become one and get stuck into a new hobby to take your mind off those winter blues. Before you know it spring will have rolled around and the low spell has vanished.

Snuggle on the sofa

When the weather gets too cold there is no other place to be but snuggled up on the sofa with your loved ones. There are plenty of nice things you can do with-out moving too far from the warmth. Pop a family favourite into the DVD play-er, have an ‘everyone is included’ reading session or gather for an afternoon of games.

Catch up with friends

Other people can turn a bad day into a great day and if you are feeling a little lost after the busy festive period why not suggest a coffee with a friend. It is also a known fact that talking about how we feel can help to lift the black cloud that we feel is hanging over our heads. If meeting in person is not possible pick up the telephone and give someone special a call. You never know it might be them who is feeling low and your call could make all the difference. And if all else fails as a very wonderful of client of mine said “I look for snow-drops.”

Background I was brought up in the south-east and moved to beautiful Gloucestershire in 1987, where I met my husband. After working as an IT professional for a number of years the opportunity to re-train came about - this led to Village Therapies being set up in 2012.

What led you into the business you have now? My mother was interested in nutrition and all sorts of holistic therapies so I grew up seeing natural health as the norm. I’ve enjoyed and benefitted from a number of alternative and complementary therapies – to me it just makes sense. With today’s world being such a very stressful place the opportunity to help people relax and sleep well, regain their energy and enthusiasm, manage their stress levels and weight, and to benefit their overall wellbeing meant that natu-ral health was the obvious vocation. I’m also lucky enough to live in a peace-ful location with lovely views making the home-based clinic conducive to re-laxation.

Why did you train in Massage and Systematic Kinesiology in particular? Body massage is probably the best known of all complementary therapies: everyone knows that mas-sage is good for you and I knew I’d enjoy the work. So it made sense to train in it first and to have some regular clients during ongoing Kinesiology training.

Natural facelift massage came later and I chose it specifically because it is ho-listic - the beauty comes from within.

Systematic Kinesiology (muscle testing) was simply a must because it’s the most encompassing natural health methodology that I’ve encountered. With it’s ability to access the body’s energy field and meridians, and using wisdom from the Chinese five elements it works in all realms: structural, nutritional, electrical and emotional enabling restoration of homoestasis (the constant inter-nal environment that the body attempts to maintain). It has so much more to offer than just food sensitivity testing.

What are your interests and hobbies? I love riding my motor bike. Having had a motor bike in my youth as my sole means of transport I now have one for fun! I’m something of a fair weather rider these days and the bike tends to stay in the garage in the winter months. Winter is when we get out walking around this wonderful area – natural beauty is so good for the soul. Walking also helps with getting fit for skiing. It’s not just the skiing that requires fitness – walking in ski boots carrying skis is pretty hard going!

The garden is a big part of domestic life. I garden organically and batch cook and freeze so the goodness of the produce can also be enjoyed later. Our rescue hens love to ‘help’ in the garden and they contribute to the compost heap. They are wonderful pets with fascinating characters and despite having worked so hard in the commercial system still lay eggs.

Any plans for the future? I’m passionate about my work and plan to work until I’m at least 80 – not full-time, of course! There are many good training cours-es that will complement what I already do and give clients greater benefit. With a growing number of referrals I feel confident that the business will continue to grow. On a personal level, we plan to take the bikes to Scotland one summer to enjoy all that space and beauty. We also plan to travel further afield so some European bike tours will feature including loading the bikes onto trains for overnight travel, meaning more distant destinations can be reached without gruelling miles of mo-torway riding.

Take a look at http://www.villagetherapies.com/home/ for balanced health, naturally.

Help

About Lisa’s Home HelpI was born in Gloucester and initially worked in the catering industry for 10 years.

I wanted a change and as I was told I have a natural caring nature I thought I’d give care work a go. So, after meeting my husband who lived in Stroud, I moved to Stroud and got a job providing home help with a local company in 2000.

I care passionately about my work as I still get as much job satisfaction now as I did when I started. I remember when I first started in care, someone mentioned to me that I would know if it was the right job within the week and it must be as, 14 years on, here I am still enjoying it!

The reason for creating my own home help business is to provide a complete service for people of all ages within their own homes. Anything from those little tasks people do not have time to do, such as spring cleaning to personal care and company.

This is the time of year when concern about older loved ones is most acute. The weather is inclement, days are short and it can be difficult or even dangerous to get around.

For anyone who is interested in finding out more about care for themselves or their loved ones, we’re able to help.

We offer a refreshing alternative to a traditional nursing home. Our new purpose-built home is beautifully appointed with private en-suite bedrooms, inviting dining areas and stylish lounges. Our menu is excellent and varied; and our approach to activities, hobbies and entertainment is award-winning.

Most importantly our care and nursing is, we believe, second to none. This is perhaps why many describe our care homes as the best in the UK.

Make that first step towards creating a positive 2015 for yourself or someone you care about.

Please call us on 01242 505641 and speak to our Home Manager, Shaun McGrane who can tell you more about Thirlestaine Park.

Moving into a nursing home is a hard choice to make and getting the right level of care, whilst retaining independence, is paramount. Once you’ve seen our ‘home from home’ approach and enjoyed the views over the beautiful valley of Painswick, we believe your choice will become easier.

Garden View What do you buy the gardener in your life for Valentine’s Day? Flowers are no good...we have gardens full of the things, and most of the gardeners I know, myself included, prefer our plants living and breathing in their natural environment. The non-green-fingered venture into dangerous territory when they try to buy plants. There are so many variables. The plant not only has to suit the taste of the gardener in question but satisfy trickier issues such as whether it’s too invasive; whether it will suit the soil and even whether it might poison the gardener’s dog or worse, children! It’s a thorny issue (pardon the pun) so I’ve put together a few horticultural Valentine suggestions which should render your favourite gardener weak at the knees. Don’t buy a sweatshirt which declares we’re ‘head-gardener. They’re the height of naff and anyway, we have plenty of old, comfy clothes which do the job. However, if you can find one, we would love a tough tunic or apron-like affair, preferably thorn-proof, and with lots of deep pockets so our secateurs don’t fall out! Then there are wellies. Gardening folk love wellies. We prefer something with a thick sole but there’s so much choice out there! I love bright and cheerful wellies but for the ultimate in warmth and breathability I can recommend a proper Goretex pair...sheer luxury, with a price tag to match! A proper long-necked watering can, with a brass rose will earn you Valentine brownie points. Don’t go too large because they’re heavy when full. 3-4 litres is about the right size.

A bunch of long-stemmed red roses will set you back about £40 minimum and last but a few days. For a similar price you can buy the gardener in your life Felco secateurs (with Valentine red handles) and they’ll last forever. I know which I’d prefer. Garden trugs are so practical. Most gardeners I know would be delighted to receive one. The trug is a great gift but even better when filled with a few gardening goodies such as packets of seed, water retaining granules, plant food etc. You could add some hand tools too, such as a trowel and a fork. Ideally they’ll be stainless steel and have long handles for ease of use. Hot drinks don’t remain hot for long outside, even on a warm day. I’ve lost count of the number of cold cups of tea I’ve drunk! The canny Valentine who gave me an insulated mug with a lid could expect a very warm reception indeed. Finally, don’t forget gardening vouchers. Often we’ll spot the perfect plant or gardening accessory when we’re strapped for cash so vouchers are a perfect gift to save for a rainy day...and gardeners love rainy days, Valentine’s or not.

This month - Love is in the air!

On February 7th 1964 the Beatles arrived in New York at the start of their first tour of the United States. More than 300 screaming teenagers greeted them as they stepped on to the tarmac at Kennedy Airport. Many teens had skipped school or work. Some were in tears and many carried placards which read "I love you, please stay". The Beatles' first scheduled appearance was on American television on the Ed Sullivan show. More than 5,000 fans applied for tickets to be part of the audience but only 750 were lucky enough to get them. Security barriers had to be erected and the fab four received the kind of police protection usually reserved for kings and presidents! It is said that the crime rate dipped to a 50 year low as more than 40% of America tuned in to watch.

They performed the songs All My Loving, Till There Was You, She Loves You, I Saw Her Standing There and I Want To Hold Your Hand. Four decades later, also in February, the Beatles were given the President's Award at the Grammys to mark the 40th anniversary of what became known as "Beatlemania". It was accepted by the widows of John Lennon and George Harrison, Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison.

Michael Gamble Funeral Directors, Stroud is one of a handful of funeral busi-nesses in the Stroud area which can still claim to be kept ‘in the family’. Michael and wife Clare remain the only funeral directors in Stroud to be accredited consist-ently by the Good Funeral Guide. Unlike some local funeral directors swallowed up by larger conglomerates the service that Michael Gamble Funeral Directors provides is polished, modest, offers considerable value for money and above all entirely fitting to the wishes of the families. Often, big funeral business continue to trade under a local name giving the impression that their service is akin to that pro-vided by an independent business. In reality, these firms are anything but and are very expensive and impersonal.

‘Times are changing,’ Mike adds. ‘Local names are not all they used to be and cannot always be relied upon to provide a deserving quality of service.’

Whether you are recently bereaved or simply curious about funeral providers it is worthwhile comparing one or two funeral businesses for a variety of reasons:

Affordability. Do not feel obliged to choose a funeral director who has been used for generations, they might actually be the most expen-sive provider in the area. For families on low income there is often means-tested State help but for others it is important that the level of debt after a funeral is minimised. Be discerning, choose the right funeral director who will help keep cost low and arrange sensible repayment schedules.

The Deceased. When someone dies where are they taken? When using an independent funeral firm you can be fairly certain they are be-ing looked after at the local funeral home you chose to call and it is here that they will be dressed and readied for when you visit the chapel of rest. With some other businesses this is just not the case.

The Funeral. With some funeral businesses you can be confident that the person with whom you arranged the funeral is the one that con-ducts the funeral on the day, retaining continuity for your benefit. With other firms, often the larger corporate firms it is an unknown. Some have a funeral director stationed at a local crematorium for several hours conducting in succession, some assign a director the day before.

Bereavement affects us all in different ways. Some of us cope by being angry, some by denial but in the end the common denominator is Loss which comes to us all sooner or later. Whether it is loss of a distant relative, friend or someone we have loved for our entire lives a funeral remains the last vestige of service and honour to them. That is why it is so important that in our grief we look for the right funeral director to provide the right service. There is rarely another chance to do so.
