Things are finally getting sorted in our new abode and we are looking forward to being able to relax and enjoy it now that this beautiful summer weather is here (hope it’s still the same by the time you read this!). It would have been a far more difficult job without the help of our very own ‘handyman’ Kevin who came to the rescue over and over again Thanks a mil-lion Kevin. I also want to give a mention to Swift removals where Danny and his team made the move so much easier than it would otherwise have been. They are a really friendly professional bunch of peo-ple and I can’t recommend them highly enough. Their sense of humour was vital! They can be contacted on 01452 612935 and no I didn’t get any discount for print-ing this!

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!
Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although
that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Stroud and the surrounding valleys and
Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Become a host with Barking MadIt’s great fun, all of the benefits of dog ownership without the emotional or financial commitment. We carefully match dogs to your home.
Why not look after someone’s dog while they’re away?
Where were you born and brought up? I was born in Cam – my dad was a printer on the Gazette then we moved to Cheltenham where he worked on the Echo, followed by Chalford Hill when he left printing. There I had the most idyllic childhood possible with pretty much complete freedom to roam. I loved and flourished at the village school. My parents gave us the most stable and secure upbringing for which I am eternally grateful and I am convinced that it stood us in good stead for life. They made a good team -my mum quieter and an absolute rock and my dad so much fun – leading us in all sorts of adventures and escapades. We moved to Stroud when I was 11 and I went to the High School to which I was not suited… too rigid and focussed on academia. I excelled in English but failed miserably at maths (since it has been discovered that I suffer from dyscalculia (the equivalent of dyslexia but with num-bers). I was happy to say goodbye (as was the headmistress) after “O” levels, and did well in my “A” levels at Cheltenham Technical College. What did you do when you left school? I took a course at Oxford Polytechnic in book publishing, which led to my first job in publishing in London. I loved living there and stayed for 12 years (my mother is a Cockney so perhaps it is in my genes?). I had sev-eral jobs initially in publishing but later as Press Officer for the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham and Publicity Manager for The Lyric Theatre Hammersmith. Then like so many Stroudies I returned - with my daughter then aged two. Stroud is a great place for children, she flourished at Stroud Valley school and then at Stroud High – unlike me she excelled academically - and went to Cardiff University, since then she has worked in publishing.
What led you to the business you have now? I had several jobs all in PR, media relations and events organising, in-cluding for the Federation of Small Businesses, which led me to go free-lance doing PR for small businesses which I have done for the past 10 years. I am passionate about the UK’s small business sector and so ad-miring of the people who have such brilliant businesses.

21Stroud is rich in them and they contribute so much to making our town what it is.
More recently I have added property management for an absent landlord to my portfolio, this includes gardening which I love and keeps me fit. Also, I have just got a new role with an organisation called Barking Mad which is an alternative for people who don’t want to put their dog into kennels while they are away. Instead they go to a Host. I have been hosting for a few months now and it gives me all the best bits of having a dog without the long-term commitment. The dogs bring everything they need for their stay including food, their bed, toys even poo bags! So it doesn’t cost the Host a penny. There is also 24/7 support should they need it. I have enjoyed dogs of all shapes, sizes and breeds. They are so well-adjusted and loved by their owners, settle quickly and obviously enjoy their holiday with me. I am now looking for more hosts in the five valleys area. Any interests or hobbies? I am blessed with a wide circle of wonderful friends with whom I love to spend time. I have just got back from a fortnight’s holiday in Greece with one of them. I love my garden, cinema, walking (even better now I frequently have a dog!). I belong to a local Book Club, like to cook and also eating at the ever-increasing really good places in Stroud and its surrounds. What of your home life? I live with my relatively new partner John – we bumped into each oth-er a few years ago but actually went to Chalford Hill primary school together. Since my dear dad died three years ago my small mummy (who is 93) lives here too. John designed a wonderful annexe for her and now he is re-vamping my garden – which I have asked to be a courtyard sort of Italian in design. Plans for the future? I would like to trundle on as I am for as long as possible! The stage I am at now is great. I plan to take the gap year that I didn’t get when I was young (no-one did in those days) which will include visiting my much-loved nephews. One lives in Singapore and the other in New Zealand where I will also get to meet his baby daughter Sophia - my first great-niece.
Stroud is a great place to be and keeps on getting better. The resto-ration of the canal is the best thing ever. I live alongside it, so see it progressing on a daily basis and it is great for dog-walking.

On July 1st 1997 Hong Kong was handed back to the Chinese authorities, ending more than 150 years of British control.
Britain first took control of Hong Kong
Island in the 19th century in a series of treaties following the Opium Wars. This period of rule was interrupted for a brief period during World War II when the Japanese took over.
In 1992 Chris Patten was sworn in as the last governor of Hong Kong with the brief that he prepare for the colony’s democratic future under Chinese Rule.
Democratic elections were held in 1995 for the new Legislative Council.
On the night of the handover a huge fireworks display lit up Victoria Harbour at 8pm local time, and a banquet for 4000 guests was held in the Convention Centre on the harbour front. Then 509 Chinese troops ceremoniously crossed the land border into Hong Kong.

Many people blush when they are embarrassed, but for some Blushing can be so extreme that it affects all of their interactions, especially the important ones! They presume they cannot control the issue, which only makes the situation worse. As anxiety about blushing goes up, so does the likelihood of blushing. And the more that people believe blushing will occur, the more likely it is that it will. Fortunately, this paradox can be quite resolved.
The specific physical system of blushing is exceedingly simple. However, their is a subconscious reason for turning red-faced.Hypnotherapy helps sufferers to interact with their subconscious to keep their confidence high, and their anxiety low. Furthermore, finding out where it all started allows hypnotherapists to make the most of further techniques used to effectively re-frame the emotion and feeling associated with and which causes blushing. Figuring out the source of the problem can help people to tackle it and completely remove or more accurately replace it’s emotional connotations.Hypnotherapists regularly deal with the behavioural patterns, which drive issues like blushing. They do this on a conscious and subconscious level, so that the individual concerned no longer fears the event. This in turn removes the trigger or expectation, and serves to eliminate the problem. When the total mind is put to use, gaining control over blushing stops being so difficult, as there is no further need to consciously try to stop it’s occurance. Once achieved, then the problem is effectively taken away completely.
Culturally, blushing symbolises embarrassment, self-awareness and self-doubt. Often sufferers experi-ence this to such an extent that it prevents them lead-ing a normal life, as they begin to avoid other people and events. Romantic life can take a big hit too, as anyone who has an issue with blushing, dates become considerably more difficult. Avoidance is not the answer.Anyone not suffering from excessive blushing generally will not have developed thought patterns pertaining to blush expectancy. So for them it’s not an actual problem.

Do you suff er with a bad back? You don’t need to.Let me help you manage and overcome the pain.
The benefits of applying hot and cold stones to the body for therapeutic reasons have been recognised for many centuries. The ancient Chinese and native Americans both used this technique to improve their sense of well-being.
These days, Hot Stone Therapy is growing in popularity in our spas and health and beauty parlours. It incorporates all the benefits of massage with the added bonus of the stones helping to boost your circulation, release tension, relax you and give you energy. It is believed to relieve the symptoms of those suffering with muscular pain; back pain; stress; insomnia; depression and poor circulation.
Part of the secret lies in the use of both hot and cold stones. Direct heat from the hot stones relaxes the muscles and expands the blood vessels, allowing for a more intense massage. The stones are coated in fragrant oils to add to your sense of well-being. The cool stones constrict the blood vessels and wake up the nervous system. This combination encourages the increase of lymph flow and natural detox in the body.
So, let’s get on with your treatment! Check with your therapist beforehand regarding what to wear for this treatment. She will be an expert in preserving your modesty. Make sure you are not in a rush before or after as you need to
savour the calming effects to the max. Before your treatment begins, your therapist will ask you about your medical history so she can choose the right products for you. It is important to tell her if you are pregnant.
When you are ready and comfortable your therapist will place the warmed and oiled stones on different acupressure points around your body, even placing tiny ones between your
toes. Expect to drift off somewhere lovely at this point! Don’t be afraid to say if the stones are too hot for you. She will then use a variety of strokes and techniques, using both her hands and the stones, to massage your muscles. The massage may be quite intense but will not be painful. This therapy seems to reach deeper without the need to apply any more pressure. Your therapist will use both hot basalt stones and cold marble stones alternately.
You may be so relaxed that you’ll have difficulty distinguishing between stones and hands. Some people are reported to experience a spiritual dimension to this treatment, receiving a sense of healing from a part of the earth. Your treatment will last for about an hour, by which time your aches and worries will have melted away. It’s important that you take time to enjoy the afterglow once your therapy is finished. Some people have reported seeing bright colours when they close their eyes, others simply feel blissed out. Remember to re-hydrate yourself with plenty of water to sip.

No, I haven’t taken leave of my senses. Pavement planting is very now. A few years ago we all wanted pristine pathways. Lines and minimalism ruled. But life gets in the way and minimalism is such darn hard work: all that weeding and scrubbing away at the algae, then a paving stone cracks and ruins the whole effect. Who can be bothered?
Make a plant pavement and you’ll be in good company. Apparently The Prince of Wales has one at Highgrove. There, creeping thymes sprout between York paving slabs. Ok, it’s all on a terribly grand scale, but we can reproduce a little of that in our own garden.
There are many suitable carpeting plants. Creeping thymes come in a variety of beautiful colours, from blue-grey foliage to yellow variegated forms, and the flowers range through pinks, purples and white.
A camomile lawn is a lovely idea, but it’s time-consuming while establishing because of all the hand weeding involved. However, camomile grows happily among paving stones and gravel. It’s probably best to choose the non-flowering variety ‘Treneague’ because, although the daisy-like flowers of other varieties are pretty, they grow a bit too high for a path.
The beauty of both thyme and camomile when grown on a path is that they release a wonderful scent when crushed under foot. Thyme has a beautiful deep, pungent scent, much sweeter than the dried
herb we all have in our kitchen store cupboard. Camomile smells delicious and fruity.
Another suitable plant which releases fragrance as you walk past is pennyroyal, a creeping mint.
There are lots of alpines and rock plants which could have been designed as pavement plants. Many will thrive in the well-drained, impoverished soil between paving slabs. Saxifrages and saginas are particularly good for this.
The old stand-by, cerastium, more commonly known as Snow-in-summer, will grow pretty much anywhere, but needs rigorous control or it will take over the whole garden!
All carpeting plants like well-drained soil and full sun. Plant about 30cm apart; water the plants in and apply a mulch of pea shingle or gravel This locks in moisture and suppresses weeds.
Your pavement plants will clothe your pathway or drive and soften its appearance. They’ll provide colour and scent and withstand all but the heaviest traffic. So make like Royalty and plant a pavement today...so much nicer than plain old concrete.

But before we print anything we talk, so if you have a story to tell call David Pealing on 01452 416391 or email [email protected] and let’s make your book a reality.

We all have stories to tell, the pity is that so many go unheard.
