It has certainly been a time of change for me recently, having gone through a di-vorce and moving house twice in four months! Aren’t they supposed to be two of the most stressful things that happen in life!! There are much worse things though and luckily I am pretty resilient. In this month’s edition we have some useful tips on handling the financial fall-out after divorce-which can test anyone caught up in the emotional minefield of this process.

On a happier note we also have some useful summer tips from Highfield Gar-den World (and gardening can be really therapeutic and an antidote to all that stress) and also an article by Zoe Warner of Vanilla Moon on taking good care of your skin during these (hopefully) sunny months.

Until next month………..Catherine

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Stroud and the surrounding valleys and

Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Summer Street Open Space Groupsecretary: Brian smith, 101 summer street, stroud, glos. gL5 1PQ

Mobile: 07976 273810 email: [email protected] Street residents fight developer’s with Village Green Application. With the onset of speculative building applications in the Stroud area, local groups have been formed to do their best to stem the tide of inappropriate development, primarily on the green field sites. The Summer Street Open Space Group has been set up specifically to make an application for Village Green Status under section 15 of the Commons Act for the fields adjoining the site in Summer Street on which Gladmans have applied to build 112 houses. Working closely with the Open Spaces Society, an application for a Village Green Status has been accepted for consideration at a Public Inquiry to be held 15th to 18th September. The basis for an application is that local people have used the land for lawful leisure activities for over twenty years without secrecy, force or permission. Local people have for many years walked their dogs, played with their children and foraged for wild nuts and fruits. If successful the Village Green Status will prevent any further development on the site. The Open Spaces Society was founded in 1865, and was then called the Commons Preservation Society. It is Britain’s oldest national conservation body. Over the last century the society has helped preserved commons for the enjoyment of the public. It has also been active in protecting the historical and vital rights-of-way network through England and Wales. Their principal work includes helping members protect their local common land, town and village greens, open spaces and public paths. There is a great amount for a small society like OSS to do, but they are persistent in defense of your rights to enjoy the countryside and towns. Retirement? Whether it’s genuine retirement or redundancy late in your working life, suddenly finding yourself without a job can be tough. You can’t just switch-off all the knowledge, skills and qualifications you’ve achieved over the years and you might not feel ready to step out of working life entirely. If the calendar says one thing but your heart and mind disagrees, what should you do?

Don’t despair, there are in excess of 1.3m pensioners still working. We represent 11% of the total workforce, and prove that many companies recognise our value, and that figure is still rising. No surprise then that the Government has been pressured into bringing forward its review on the working-age limit.

Benefits Find out what your entitlements are. Check out www.direct.gov.uk to find out about pensions, earnings and tax. If you prefer to talk to someone in person on the phone, ensure you have all relevant information to hand: P45, NI Number etc. Even if you’re only entitled to a few pennies at this stage, the important thing is that you are registered. Other benefits may come your way later. Job-hunting www. jobcentreguide.co.uk gives an abundance of information on vacancies and also free cv advice, which is especially helpful if you are out of practice in the art of selling yourself to a prospective employer. You can register your cv on line with any number of

agencies, such as www.reed.co.uk, which show jobs in your area, and assist with careers advice. If you prefer to register in person, pop into your local Job Centre or Recruitment Agency. These are all positive moves which will

help you feel more confident and in control.

There are many ways to research information about employment. The library and your local college are good starting points. Libraries often have computer terminals available for public use, and some run courses if your PC skills need polishing.

When you get an interview: Be positive Stress the good reputation of the firm plus other positive information.

Play to your strengths Explain how the skills you’ve acquired throughout your working life will benefit this company

Play down the negatives of unemployment or retirement Describe any voluntary work, hobbies studying and training you’ve completed.

As an older person Play on your experience and loyalty but…

Reassure the employer You are hard working, flexible and willing to learn.

Think of retirement or redundancy as a fresh start. It may be a chance to reinvent yourself and it’s never too late to land your dream job. Good luck.

No Thanks!

Divorce

We all know about the emotional pain of breaking up but most of us know less about the financial pitfalls.

It’s essential to seek financial advice. Time dedicated to sorting out money matters in the initial stages of a divorce can save a lot of financial heartbreak later.

You need to understand your partner’s financial position. Hopefully they’ll co-operate but if they become angry or evasive then a solicitor or mediator can help to get to the bottom of the situation.

On the subject of solicitors, don’t be afraid to consult one for an initial assessment. It may be expensive but it is generally money well spent, even if you ultimately decided to save money by doing things yourselves.

A good solicitor will provide you with a document setting out the estimated costs. This should be reviewed and updated periodically.

Solicitors are trained to look out for potential pitfalls, both immediate and long term. For example: if you have joint bank accounts and / or credit cards you are jointly and severally liable for any direct debits or debts incurred while using them. This means that a bank or credit card company can pursue either partner (or both) for settlement of any debts.

Also, if a bank account is held in joint names either partner can remove some or even all of the available funds without permission of the other. Also a bank can freeze an account at the request of either party if there is a dispute.

Any debts held solely in your partner’s name are not recoverable from you BUT beware; if your mortgage is in your joint names and your partner cannot make their loan payments the loan company may seek to have the house sold in order

to recover their money.

Pensions are very valuable assets indeed. If you have one it needs to be protected. If your partner has one, you may have a claim on part of its value.

If there are school or university fees involved it is vital that these are safe-guarded from the outset. Both partners should agree that whatever their differences the children must come first.

It’s pretty obvious that matters can become very complicated and emotional very quickly so also seeking help from a trained mediator can often make the whole process less stressful and sometimes less costly.

Which Wine?

Choosing wine can be fun. But you do have to have an idea where to start. A good place to begin is to ask yourself whether the wine is for quaffing, maybe with a few canapés, or whether it’s to accompany a special meal, where the food will take centre stage. If it’s the former then New World wines (Australian, Californian etc) are a sure bet. They’re fruity and ripe and perfectly suited to drinking on their own. If you need wine to accompany a meal then you’re generally safe with an Old World (European) wine. The French, Italians, Spaniards et al have been developing wine to complement food for a couple of hundred years and they’re good at it, producing wines rich in tannins with lots of natural acidity. These are just guidelines though. If you like an Australian Shiraz with your burger, go for it. What about the cost of wine? Is

expensive always better? Well mostly yes. Consider this: many of the fixed costs of wine production (bottle, cap, cork, label etc.) are the same, so any extra you pay should guarantee you an increase in the quality of the wine. A good way to test this is to treat yourself to a more expensive bottle of a wine you know you like. So if you like Spanish Merlot and usually pay £5 per bottle, next time you have a special occasion try one at £10-15 and taste the difference. There’s a lot of confusion about corks vs screw caps. Cork is actually bark and it imparts flavour to wine over time. Try leaving a cork in a glass of water over night then taste the water in the morning if you don’t believe me. Unfortunately corks can taint, producing 2.4.6 trichloroanisole (TCA) which makes wine taste horrid. This is corked wine. Screw caps don’t suffer from this and are an excellent seal for wines which are drunk young, such as Cabernet Sauvignon. Screw caps haven’t been around long enough yet for us to assess their effect on aged wines but with manufacturers developing caps which allow a little oxygen through (as corks do) the signs are good that screw caps are here to stay. Finally, a few rules about matching food with wine. Well really there aren’t any hard and fast rules. A good guide is that lighter foods such as fish and sea food go best with lighter wines but this doesn’t necessarily mean white: a light red, such as Beaujolais can work very well. Equally if you are having something rich and fatty, a heavier wine with plenty of tannins would make a good match. The answer is to experiment...now that does sound like fun.

Improve your knowledge with our handy guide

When you’re handed a wine list how do you feel? If you generally look flustered and mumble, ‘I’ll have the Chardonnay please,’ because it’s the only one you’ve heard of which doesn’t require you to remortgage your house, read on.

The Stroud Valleys Clocking Off Festival campaign is happening in July and aims to raise awareness of the issues surrounding death, dying and bereavement, to support and inform local people to become more preparedabout the end of their own life or that of a loved one.

The main event is the Clocking Off Information Day, which will take place on Saturday 12 July 2014 in the Subscription Rooms in Stroud. The ballroom (first floor) will have 20 stalls, taken by local or national companies, who will be available to discuss their services.

Downstairs in the George Room there will be a series of talks throughout the day, covering such subjects as will-making, inheritance tax, funeral planning and end of life care decisions.

There will also be related events around Stroud such as poetry readings, drama, a dignity in dying debate and a death café, etc. See local press for details or contact Jenn on [email protected].

Where were you born and brought up?

I was born in Malmesbury hospital and I grew up in Tetbury where I lived with my parents and brother until I was about 12. Then my parents moved to Stroud and so I have had friends in and around the Stroud district ever since.

What did you do after you left school?

I have always been practically minded and had an interest in sports. My first job was at Prinknash Pottery. After this I worked in joinery, where I also had the opportunity to get involved with quite a lot of practical and creative work.

How do you get into tree surgery?

I was about 19 when a friend invited me to try my skills at the indoor climbing centre in Gloucester. After this, there was no looking back for me and I knew this was going to be a hobby and passion for life. Climbing was also the skill needed for my next job - working as an apprentice tree surgeon for a local firm. Straight away I realised that this sort of outdoor life was just for me. After a few years I joined a larger firm where I gained a lot of experience and qualifications. At about the age of 27 I was looking for a new adventure -this took me to London. I ran a team of men and had the full responsibility of managing the logistics of organising challenging tree surgery jobs in very complex situations - traffic flows, pedestrian ways, overhead cables, access through homes, listed trees etc.

What are your interests and hobbies?

I have quite a few interests and hobbies but as mentioned earlier, my main passion has to be rock climbing. However to get to some of the best rock climbing sites, involves travel. When in this coun-try I often travel in my classic VW camper van, the renova-tion and maintenance of which has been quite time consuming and a bit of a hob-by in itself. Some of the great rock faces have taken me as far afield as Australia, Thai-land, Spain and the Yosemiti National Park in America. When there I climbed The Half Dome. On my first visit this took 2 days. On my second I climbed it in one.

Travel and climbing means you meet lots of interesting people from many different backgrounds. I think this helps you keep a bal-anced perspective and outlook on life. Climbing buddies can be-come very close - you have to trust them with your life and a ca-maraderie exists between us. Also when in London I had the op-portunity to immerse myself in some of the best culture around.

What are your plans for the future?

Of course I want to make a success of my business in this area by building a trusting clientele who will feel entirely confident recom-mending me to others who need tree surgery work. I intend to do this by ensuring that customer satisfaction is top priority. I believe this is the best way for small businesses to operate and grow. I take a pride in my work and like to deliver an excellent service to my customers. Although I am single at the moment, I hope to have a family of my own one day, but these things can be harder to achieve than climbing El Capitan ! !

by Jon Mason of Highfield Garden World in Whitminster

What better way to spend a sunny day or balmy evening than by relaxingoutside in the garden? Whether you’ve got a pretty little patio, or an acre oflandscaped perfection, summer is the time to get out and really enjoy thatspace.

With relaxation in mind, here are a few super-easy hints and tips to help youkeep your plants looking their gorgeous, blooming best for as long aspossible.

In dry weather, your plants will really thank you for a good soaking. Hanging baskets andcontainers can dry out extremely fast, so pay particular attention to them. Try to water atcooler times of day – in the evening or morning work best.

Regularly snipping or pinching off old flower heads not only keeps plants looking fresh, ithas a big impact on encouraging new flowers to keep coming as well.

Keep an eye out for signs of pests and diseases, and treat them early forbest results, using sprays sparingly but appropriately to help combat any problems.

As well as water, plants need food to keep them flourishing. A plant food with a highpotash content is a good all-rounder for Summer flowering plants - or drop in to your localgarden centre for advice. To keep your lawn looking luscious, a high nitrogen food will dothe trick.

If you’ve gaps to fill, take a trip to your local garden centre to see what’s looking good rightnow. Pick up some wallflower and pansy seeds while you’re there. They can be started offnow ready for planting out in late September for a splash of colour in the Autumn.

We all have stories to tell, the pity is that some go unnoticedand unprinted. We’ve been printing books for some time now.In the past few years we’ve done them on local history, novels, illustrated children’s books, guides, and family books that are perfect for recording close family stories. These have been as few as 20 copies.

With modern printing methods we can now print and produce just a few copies. These are ideal if you’d like to try your idea on the mainstream publishers, or just for those few exclusive people who you may like to write for.

Not only can we print your book, but we can advise you on the best way to prepare it for print, or we can do the whole of the design and artwork for you from scratch. We advise on the best binding methods for the books as well as suggestions for marketing, and we can even build you a simple website for it too.

Before we print we talk. So if you have a story to tell and you want to get it into print call me: Paul Davies, on 01452 300158 and lets make your book a reality.

Everybody’s got a book in them.

“In the summer time, when the weather fine, you can stretch right up and touch the sky...” Yes, finally it’s that time of year again when we can all get out our summer wardrobes, show off some skin for a change and enjoy those long summer evenings in the garden or down the local pub garden even. With all this warm weather it can encourage some of us to have a few more drinks than usual, together with the odd patch of sunburn here and there – this time of year cannot always leave your skin looking so good.

Never fear! We have listed a few tips for you just below to keep your complexion and skin looking radiant for the following summer months so you can enjoy them to the very maximum.

Keep Hydrated

Your skin can always be the first tell tale sign that you’ve had a big night out previously. From bags under your eyes to your overall complexion looking dull and grey.

When out drinking in the sun, always remember to drink water as well between alcoholic drinks as this will help keep you hydrated and skin looking healthy – it will also help to stop you feeling hung-over in the morning.

Make Up

No matter what time you get home, always remember to take off your make up. If left on overnight, make up can really dry out your skin leading to fine lines and wrinkles eventu-ally. In combination with the alcohol, panda eyes are not a good look in the morning. Gently sweep a cleansing wipe over your face and massage it gently on the key areas such as cheeks and forehead to help get rid of any toxin build up. Exfoliate

Getting rid of all that sun cream, after sun and dead skin build up will leave you glowing after a good exfoliating session. Simply buy an exfoliating glove for the shower and load it up with your favourite shower cream – your skin will feel softer and smoother all over too. However, if you are unfortunate enough to have got sunburnt, leave the exfoliation and treat your skin with TLC, after-sun cream and lavender but remember the best cure is prevention!

Moisturise

Ok, so you are hydrated, make up free and have exfoliated – now it’s time to moisturise. Using a cream rich in aloe vera will help you completely moisturise your skin back to health and also heal any sunburn you may have.

Enjoy the summer, without damaging your skin! With these steps you’ll be able to look as fresh as a daisy after a night out – no matter if you don’t actually feel that way inside!
