    ife and Career

Born on June 5, 1964, Rick Riordan grew up in Texas. He attended the Alamo HeightsHigh School, graduating in 1982. For higher education Rick enrolled at the University

of Texas in Austin double majoring in English and history. After graduation from the

university in 1986, Rick Riordan chose teaching for a career. For 15 years Rick taught

English, history and Greek mythology at various middle schools in the San Francisco

Bay Area and in San Antonio. In 2002, he was presented the St. Marys Halls first

Master Teacher Award for his exceptional teaching services. Rick began to enjoy

writing from an early age. He made many unsuccessful attempts of publishing his short

stories in teenage years. At school, Rick was appointed the editor of the high school

newspaper. It was not until graduation from college and teaching in San Francisco that

    Riordan took writing seriously.

Riordans son, Haley who was diagnosed with ADHD (TDAH in Brazil) and dyslexia

held a keen interest in a subject his father taught, Greek mythology. Then in the second

grade, Haley would often request upon Rick to tell him stories inspired by Greek

mythologies. In order to fulfill his sons request, Riordan quickly invented the character

of Percy Jackson, a twelve year boy who suddenly discovers he is the son of a Greek

God. Riordan began a creatively crafted imaginative tale of Percys expedition to bring

back Zeuss lightning bolt in present day America. After Rick finished telling the story

in three nights, Haley requested him to write down the story as a book. Not wanting todisappoint his son, Riordan took out time to write down the story. To show his respect

and care for dyslexic children, Riordan attributed some characteristics of this disease to

Percy. Thus, Riordans world famous Percy Jackson series came into being.

While living in California was enjoyable and comfortable for his wife and kids, Riordan

yearned for Texas. His nostalgic feelings for Texas led him to write a mystery novel set

in San Antonio, his hometown. The novel entitled Big Red Tequila featured the central

character of Tres Navarre, a private eye Ph.D in English. The novel received

enthusiastic reviews and won Riordan the three most prestigious awards in the mystery

genre. Riordan was presented the Edgar, Anthony and Shamus awards for Big RedTequila. Riordan has to his credit a number of other awards as well.

Riordan is author to five series which include Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The

Heroes of Olympus, The 39 Clues Series, Tres Navarre Series and The Kane

Chronicles. He is also written a standalone novel entitled Cold Springs which was

published in 2004. Rick Riordan currently resides in San Antonio with his wife and

    their two sons.

Where did you get the idea for Percy Jackson?

My son Haley asked me to tell him some bedtime stories about the Greek gods and

heroes. I had taught Greek myths for many years at the middle school level, so I wasglad to comply. When I ran out of myths, he was disappointed and asked me if I could

make up something new with the same characters.

I thought about it for a few minutes. Then I remembered a creative writing project I

used to do with my sixth gradersI would let them create their own demigod hero, the

son or daughter of any god they wanted, and have them describe a Greek-style quest for

that hero. Off the top of my head, I made up Percy Jackson and told Haley all about his

quest to recover Zeus lightning bolt in modern day America. It took about three nights

to tell the whole story, and when I was done, Haley told me I should write it out as a

    book.

I had a lot to do already, but I somehow found the time to write the first Percy Jackson

book over the next year. I just really enjoyed writing it. The story was such fun, and so

different from my adult fiction, that I found myself spending a lot of time on it. Now,

    Im sure glad I did!"

    - Rick Riordan in an interview about Percy Jackson & the Olympian series.

    ontroversies

Ever since the first book in the series, The Lightning Thief, was released in 2005, theauthor has been facing a sequence of accusations, mainly in the form of plagiarism, of

copying other successful series of children's literature, like Harry Potter. Even Rick

agreed the plot and the characters from The Lightning Thief are considerably

resembling the ones from the British author J.K. Rowling.

The most evident similarities are Riordan's trio of main characters: the protagonistPercy Jackson, a problematic boy who is abused at home and discovers suddenly that

his origins are completely different from what he imagined and that a future of

adventure and emotion awaits him, just like Harry Potter, Grover, a clumsy and

cowardly, but loyal goat boy, like J.K.'s Ron Weasley and Annabeth, an extremely

intelligent and independent girl, similarly to Hermione Granger. The first movie of the Percy Jack & the Olympians series was directed by Chris

Columbus, who had directed two movies from the Harry Potter series. As an answer to

the accusations, Rick went on record saying:

"I'm sure the publishers would argue about the Potter comparison, saying that the

template is mythology and not magic: gods, demi-gods, furies and the like. But get

serious: It's pure Harry, from the revelation that teen-age Percy has powers he never

knew about to the Hogwarts-like camp where he learns to use said powers to the

Dumbledore-like teacher (in this case, the centaur Chiron, played by Pierce Brosnan)

who helps him achieve his destiny."

    - Marshall Fine

"She [Rowling] established the standard for the new children's literature, but Percy and

Harry are very different children, who live in different worlds."

    - Rick Riordan on the plagiarism accusations around Percy Jackson and Harry Potter.
