American Language Institute at NYU Shanghai

ALI faculty members, renowned in their fields, have taught worldwide and are masters at creating community in their classrooms and beyond, fostering a global network of learn-ers. Faculty members utilize the latest teaching techniques and technology to ensure ALI Shanghai students are fully engaged participants in their learning. All courses are taught at the NYU Shanghai campus.

AEP courses are offered part-time and full-time. Attend classes mornings, afternoons, evenings, or weekends.

Students who wish to take courses at the American Language Institute at NYU Shanghai are required to attend an information session at the NYU Shanghai Pudong Campus. Information sessions include a model lesson, short exam, and the option of registering on-site for courses. Academic English Program (AEP)

The Academic English Program provides students with the cultural and academic skills needed for success in an American higher education institution. The AEP program emphasizes critical thinking, persuasive writing, public presentation, and class participation skills essential for success in a U.S. university setting. Students earn an NYU Shanghai noncredit certificate upon successful comple-tion of an English language level. This credential validates English language comprehension for college and gradu-ate applications. In the Academic English Program, you will learn:

• American academic culture and classroom norms

• The art of argumentation and the skills needed to compose persuasive academic papers

• To speak in a classroom setting with confidence, fluency, and conviction

• Techniques for fine tuning your accent

• Grammar accuracy

Academic Reading and Writing courses are designed to guide you from the early stages of reading an essay for the main idea to analysis of complex texts. In writing, you will begin with descriptions on familiar topics and progress to expressing abstract ideas in a range of essay genres. Students who successfully complete our highest level of Academic Reading and Writing will have sophisticated knowledge of how to interpret a text as well as the ability to think critically, write research papers, and build evidence to support a position.

In this class, you will focus on reading and writing for academic purposes. You will read newspaper articles and textbook excerpts and study sentence structure and development. By the end of the course, you will be able to identify the main idea of an article, its chronological order, and transitions in a group of sentences as well as write a description and a story about a familiar topic.

You will study complex sentence structures and write detailed paragraphs. Also, you will study essay forms for argumentation, narration, and description. By the end of the course, you will be able to write both summaries and complete essays.

You also will study essay types such as summary/response, persuasive, and compare/contrast. By the end of the course, you will be able to determine an author’s purpose and tone, understand both stated and implied meaning, and write essays using the essay types indicated above.

In this class, you will focus on reading and writing for academic purposes. You will read from news articles, op-eds, essays, and excerpts from textbooks in different areas of study to be able to interpret why a text describes a topic in a certain way and why particular evidence is used. You will study editing strategies while writing multiple drafts of essays in different genres. By the end of the course, you will be able to interpret a text based upon the author’s choice of content, language, and structure. Additionally, you will be able to write cause and effect and solution essays.

Academic Speaking and Listening courses are designed to guide you in understanding authentic listening material and engaging in discussions on academic topics. In the early levels, you will be exposed to a variety of listening samples and gain confidence understanding and responding to topics in discussion. By the time you complete the most advanced level of Academic Speaking and Listening, you will be able to offer opinions on abstract topics, respond to both sides of an argument, support an opinion clearly in an academic setting, and develop and deliver presentations.

By the end of the course, you will be able to paraphrase listening material, state an opinion providing concrete reasons, and provide a clear summary. Additionally, you will be an active listening/speaking participant on topics of personal and general interest.

In this course, you will focus on developing the speaking and listening skills necessary to participate in a university class-room setting or in other situations requiring formal or profes-sional English language skills. You will focus on classroom language fluency and pronunciation accuracy. You will work on pronunciation exercises and listening practice and take part in both formal and informal discussions. Additionally, you will be able to give individual and group presentations of various lengths, as well as participate in debates. By the end of the course, you will be able to speak comfortably aloud, express your opinions in an American classroom, and develop strategies for reacting to a text aloud.

You will work with a variety of materials to summarize, discuss, and analyze infor-mation presented. You will make presentations which will receive peer feedback as well as instructor comments. By the end of the course, you will be able to offer opinions as well as respond to the opinions of others. You also will learn to see both sides of an argument and to take a stand and support a position. Finally, you will improve stress and intonation; learn to interpret underlying messages; and organize, develop, and critique presentations.

Introduction to Pronunciation IESL–NI2303/¥7,350

In this class, you will focus on learning and practicing the pronunciation of basic sounds in American English. You will discover where and how consonants and vowels are made in the mouth, and creatively practice these sounds through enunciation drills in class, pair, and group activities. You also will practice the pronunciation of complete sentences to develop an awareness of the ways Americans skip and contract words. By the end of the course, you will be able to recognize, distinguish, and consistently pronounce American consonants and vowels correctly.

Introduction to Pronunciation IIESL–NI2403/¥7,350

(Mon., Wed. 1–3 p.m.)

This class builds on knowledge gained in Introduction to Pronunciation I to develop an awareness of the stress and intonation patterns in American English. Through dialogues, discussions, and short readings, you will become aware of the rhythm of English as you practice basic stress and intona-tion patterns. You also will practice giving extra stress to content words for emphasis or contrast. By the end of the course, you will be comfortable speaking and have devel-oped a more natural rhythm to your speech.

Pronunciation IESL–NI2503/¥7,350

In this class, you will learn to recognize how Americans use intonation and stress to add meaning to a message. You will listen to native speaker dialogues and analyze how the tone of voice reinforces or contradicts what the speaker is saying. You also will examine the difference between formal and informal vocabulary choice. You will listen to recordings of short speeches you make and analyze where and how you need to correct your pronunciation. By the end of the course, you will not only have improved your pronunciation, but will have an in-depth understanding of the importance of how a message is delivered.

Pronunciation IIESL–NI2603/¥7,350

In this class, you will practice speaking and presenting arguments and information in an academic context. You will analyze native speaker dialogues and mark stress patterns to identify how effective speakers stress key words for maximum effect when using a public voice. You will use pronunciation skills acquired in earlier classes to present dialogues naturally. You will prepare, record, and give feedback on academic presentations. By the end of the course, you will be able to better understand and be understood by American speakers, and be ready to function effectively in both academic and non-academic contexts.

In this class, you will focus on spoken and written presentation skills. You will learn the skills necessary for the preparation and execution of an effective presentation. You will study how to summarize and respond to a given topic, participate in discussions and debate. You will present short oral reports and improve your pronunciation and use of stress and intona-tion. By the end of the course, you will be able to engage in public speaking in English, and respond appropriately to information introduced and opinions expressed by others. You will feel comfortable speaking aloud and expressing your opinions in an American classroom.

In this class, you will focus on grammatical accuracy in both writing and speaking. You will study grammatical forms and meanings to develop written and oral language skills. You will study grammar rules, but more importantly, you will have the opportunity to put these into practice. You will receive individualized feedback and guidance from your instructor. By the end of this course, you will be able to use the mechan-ics of grammar to put together sentences that are clear.

In this class, you will focus on grammatical accuracy in both writing and speaking. You will learn about form and meaning to create longer and different forms of written and spoken language. By the end of this course, your grammatical accuracy will allow you to write/speak using longer sentences with varied mechanical tools.

Research Skills IESL–NI2704/¥7,350

In this class, you will acquire skills and strategies that are necessary in producing quality research writing. These skills include reading, reflecting, summarizing, note taking, outlining, paraphrasing, writing all parts of a research paper, and integrating evidence into your paper. Additionally, you will understand the nuances of what constitutes plagiarism and how to formulate and express original ideas. By the end of this course, you will have learned how to give a formal presentation and write a research paper.

In this class, you will acquire skills and strategies that are necessary in producing quality research writing. These skills include writing an annotated bibliography and paraphrasing source material. Additionally, you will understand the nuances of what constitutes plagiarism and how to formulate and express original ideas. In this class, you will learn the process of admission to U.S. institutions of higher learning. You will receive an overview of the college and graduate application process and the opportunity to work on many elements of the application, including the personal statement and short essay answers. You will receive individual feedback as you write drafts of your application. In addition, you will learn about the culture of American academic institutions. By the end of this course, you will have drafted a personal essay for your U.S. undergraduate or graduate admissions application and completed one full application.

In this class, you will learn reading and writing skills that will help you succeed in an American classroom. In addition, you will explore the values of American higher education, analyzing what constitutes an ideal student in the U.S. Additionally, you will discuss the nuances of plagiarism and learn to develop original ideas. By the end of this course, you will gain insight on the challenges you will face when studying in the U.S. and skills to equip you to handle these challenges.
