BUCS is working with the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) to launch two new resources to assist members in growing participation with disabled students. Together with EFDS, BUCS have produced a 'Time to Get Inclusive' resource providing the latest research, insight, advice and guidance, along with principles and useful contacts, to help universities get started. An excellent resource for universities to make use of, you can find the resource here on the BUCS website. Alongside this, BUCS are pleased to launch a new Disability Sport Information Hub, intended to become a “one stop shop” for all you need to know about disability sport and inclusion. If you have a story to tell, learning to share or insight to add, or similarly have any queries, please contact David Padgen, the BUCS National Disability Sport Officer. Source of information

Ageing in the UK: Trends and Foresight The population of the UK is set to increase significantly over the next decade, with much of this growth driven by an ageing population and sustained increases in the number of people over 65 years old. This report covers the national picture, demographics, income, health, loneliness, dementia, older carers, volunteering and digital inclusion. Cheap gym offer giving fitness edge over sport New research by credit and debit card analysts Cardlytics suggests that consumer spending on gym membership has increased by 44% in the last year. The figures indicate that increases in attending the gym are outstripping rises in participation in most sports. Budget gyms are largely being credited with the increase in demand for fitness facility membership but mid to high-tier gyms have also experienced significant increases of up to 22%. A study by Mintel confirmed the findings. It said that the rise in wearable tech is also driving gym membership, with more than half of consumers seeking to measure their activity with apps like Fitbit or Strava. View the full news item

Both give priority to organisations working with social and/or economic disadvantage, for example people with disabilities, mental health problems or experiencing rural isolation, to tackle problems in areas of high deprivation.

Applications from community businesses are welcomed for their Initial Grants Programme from 1st September 2015 until midday on 22nd October 2015.

The programme is designed to help new and existing community businesses in a position to significantly improve their long-term sustainability within six months of receiving a grant. See their website for further guidance on definitions of a community business and grants given to date.

They are looking for applications from existing organisations, which already have business plans in place and are ready to start work quickly on their proposals. Longer term funds, which will launch in early 2016, will include opportunities for new and early stage organisations to apply for funding.

If you are currently trading, you will need to demonstrate how funding through IGP will help you to increase your trading income and become more financially sustainable and less reliant on grants in the long term. By ‘sustainable’ they are looking for businesses that have long-term viability. This may still include some grant funding, but you will be able to clearly demonstrate how our grant will support your business to generate enough income so that you will become less reliant on grant funding in the future. If you are not yet trading, you will need to demonstrate how funding through IGP will help you to start trading within six months, and make a significant contribution towards your long-term sustainability.

Grant requests can be between £50,000 and £500,000.
