Inclusively Fit Project launch event held at University Centre Shrewsbury

On Wednesday 13th January the project steering group hosted an interactive morning to promote the project and its mission within the County. The launch event’s opening speech was delivered by Mark Fosbrook with three hats on as the English Federation of Disability Sport Enablement Advisor, GB Wheelchair Basketball Gold Medallist and the Inclusively Fit Project Chairperson. Sport and exercise specialist Dr Alan Sweeney delivered a key presentation into the role of physical activity and its effect on maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

A wonderful performance from Shropshire Inclusive Dance broke up the presentations, along with Derwen College students giving insight into barriers to activity from local disabled people, coaches and exercise leaders.

One student read “After my brain injury I put on a lot of weight as I wasn't as mobile as I used to be. My confidence was at rock bottom because of the injury, I really needed someone who could show and support me in finding new ways to get active and fit”.

The Inclusively Fit Project is a Reaching Communities, Big Lottery funded project covering Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin. It aims to encourage more disabled people to access local sport and physical activity opportunities to benefit their health and wellbeing, self-confidence and reduce social isolation.

Perry Riding for the Disabled Association were also in attendance showcasing the fantastic work they do engaging disabled people to be active by Hippotherapy, Vaulting and Carriage Driving. Along with Cycling Projects and Cycling for All group who deliver inclusive cycling events across Shropshire.

Jessica Lightwood, Shropshire Inclusion Officer commented on the event “We wanted to bring a range of guests from different backgrounds including health and social care, education, and leisure. This created an opportunity to learn more about the project and how, within their role, they can advocate the project to engage more disabled people into activity”

A web based directory has been created to search for local opportunities, increasing the awareness and accessibility for disabled people to be active. In addition, we have recently launched transport, equipment and coaching bursaries to support individuals, clubs and groups to become more active and inclusive. Also to support the highlighted barrier of self-confidence and lack of motivation proven to affect people with disabilities, we have a volunteer buddy programme, giving new disabled participants the opportunity to try a new activity for the first time.

If you would like to get involved in the Buddy Programme as a participant or volunteer, or if you would like to know more about the bursaries please see below.

Shropshire embraces ‘This Girl Can’ activity campaign A nationwide campaign seeking to inspire more women and girls to get active has been a big success in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin during its first year, organisers say. Nationally, around 1.6 million females aged between 14 and 40 have started exercising for the first time as a result of Sport England’s ‘This Girl Can’ campaign, with a further 1.2 million increasing their levels of activity, research has revealed. And in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin, a series of initiatives have been launched including a bursary for female sports coaches, a convention for sport and physical activity providers, and ‘Sportivate’ activity sessions for all ages and abilities. A major This Girl Can festival is also planned at Bridgnorth Endowed School on March 3, showcasing 15 different activities for primary school children at local clubs including Archery, Canoeing, Rugby and Hula Hooping.

Chris Child, chief executive of county sports partnership Energize, said: “We are delighted at the way our local partners, such as the local authorities, have embraced this campaign, and we are excited about the new activities aimed at women and girls which are planned in our area this year.” Sports Minister, Tracey Crouch, said: "Initiatives such as Sport England's This Girl Can are helping to change behaviour and encourage more women and girls to participate in sport. These figures paint a promising picture but we need to build upon this foundation.” Later in January, a new partnership with Sport Relief will also be launched, encouraging women to get active whilst raising money for great causes. Telford Council wins prestigious access award

Telford & Wrekin Council has won a national award for outstanding work in providing new public rights of way on Council land.

The award, which was shared with Telford Bridleways Association, was presented by television star Martin Clunes, the President of the British Horse Society, in recognition of the work the Council has done to dedicate new public rights of way.

Dedicating new bridleways gives the public a legal right of access on foot, cycle and horseback.

A number of areas benefited from this work with Telford Town Park receiving the greatest number of new routes.

Councillor Liz Clare, cabinet member for Leisure Services and Culture, said: “I’m delighted that the Council has been recognised for this very important work protecting and dedicating routes for future use in the borough.

“It’s easy to see the development that is taking place all across the borough, but it’s not always obvious that we are also working hard to protect our green spaces and pathways.

“Receiving this award highlights the efforts that staff, members of the public and councillors are making to ensure that the borough grows with balance, and with consideration of the needs of all residents and visitors.

“I would like to congratulate all those involved in achieving this award and the work that continues to take place to widen the right of way network further.” Click here for the full story

Finding the social value of sport and physical activity

The Government's sports strategy placed a lot of importance on the social value of sport and physical activity. Robert Gill, Policy Support Officer, has taken a closer look at what this means. As you would have seen, Minister for Sport Tracey Crouch MP announced a “new focus on social outcomes” in the Government’s sports strategy by including ‘social and community development’ as one of the five key outcomes by which the Government will now use to measure how to fund sports projects and organisations. It is clear that the role sport can play in achieving social good will become of greater importance to the sports sector over the coming years. View the full blog

All-Party Parliamentary Group for Sport questions Government Ministers on new sport strategy On Monday 11th January, the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Sport, co-chaired by Chris Heaton-Harris MP and Baroness Grey-Thompson, invited Sports Minister, Tracey Crouch MP, and the Transport Minister, Robert Goodwill MP, to discuss the detail of the strategy with over 80 parliamentarians and representatives from the sector. Tracey Crouch MP opened the meeting and spoke about how passionate she was about the new strategy, which was published in December 2015, commenting that it was a reflection of conversations she had had with the sector previously. During the meeting she stressed the expectation that its implementation would involve better, joined-up, cross-departmental delivery, with input from Health, Education and Transport to be

included as key government departments. View the full news item
