Women Make Sport

Conference

Local Conference Aims to Inspire Shropshire Women to be Active Sport England research discovered that fear of judgement is a major barrier preventing women from taking part in physical activity and sports. Their ground breaking and award winning ‘This Girl Can’ campaign aimed to tackle this issue through using videos and images of real women being active and clever slogans, such as “Sweating like a pig, feeling like a fox.” This Girl Can has ignited the imaginations of women across the country. The Women Make Sport Conference will build on this by offering the opportunity to hear the latest thinking on how we can empower women to be more active and also give the opportunity to network with likeminded people. Catriona West, founder of Bridgnorth Running Club and a local 'This Girl Can', will be a speaker at the Conference, sharing her story and other inspirational stories from the ladies of Bridgnorth Running Club. Delegates will get the opportunity to hear from Paralympic Archer, Mel Clarke who uses her story to inspire other women to be active. Sport England will be presenting a seminar with examples of what is working in terms of engaging female participants and there will also be seminars on the important role of the sports coach in engaging and retaining women in activities from Sports Coach UK, and on the marketing resources available to support others who want to create opportunities for women to be active with examples from England Netball of how they have used marketing to engage women. Tickets are £22 per person and this includes seminars, refreshments and lunch. To book tickets visit: https://womenmakesport.eventbrite.co.uk/ or if you simply want a bit more information then please call 01743 453496 or email [email protected].

Helping sport to become ‘What Women Want’ New research and practical guidelines published today by leading UK charity, Women in Sport, aims to provide sport with the means to engage more effectively with women and girls and increase the number of women playing sport. Women in Sport has defined six key values that are fundamental in the lives of women and girls and which, if tapped into effectively, can influence their sporting behaviours. The values: looking good; feeling good; nurturing family and friends; achieving goals; developing skills; and having fun are influential, the charity has discovered, to varying degrees and at different times in a woman’s life. ‘Understanding Women’s Lives: Re-Designing and Re-Positioning Sport and Physical Activity to Engage Women’ provides organisations delivering sporting opportunities to women and girls a tried and tested model for understanding what women want from sport. It also showcases practical examples of how to use the values system to engage, in a more sophisticated way, with the 13.2 million women aged 14 and over who say they want to take part in more sport or physical activity. Western Power Distribution Community Chest Western Power Distribution (WPD) in partnership with the Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE) is running another £50,000 grant scheme for communities in the Midlands, South West and South Wales to help reduce their energy use. The aim of the grant scheme, funded by WPD and administered by CSE, is to help community groups carry out simple but effective energy efficiency improvements in village halls and community buildings, after carrying out their own energy audits. The maximum award per group will be £1,000. Improvements could include things like low energy lighting, heating controls, draught proofing and insulation, which can have significant impacts on reducing energy use and fuel bills.
